ACC Commissioner Gives Four College Football Scenarios for 2020

ACC Commissioner John Swofford outlined the ACC’s current plans and hopes in regards to college football in 2020.

ACC Commissioner John Swofford addressed the media on Thursday after meeting with conference representatives. In his media address he outlined four scenarios in regards to both college football in 2020 and collegiate sports as a whole during the 2020-21 school year.

The Four Scenarios:
1.  Football schedule played as currently scheduled
2.  A shortened football season
3.  No football but basketball is played as scheduled
4.  No sports at all for the 2020-21 academic year

If you see scenarios three and four and get worried, Swofford was at least optimistic that neither would play out, saying “We are going into this year with the anticipation of playing at this point.”

“All of our institutions are indicating they intend to open in various fashions as we go into the fall.”

Swofford also noted that the ACC would most-likely be willing to proceed with the season even if some member schools aren’t ready or able to participate.

“I think probably so,” said the commissioner. “I don’t know what the threshold is on that. We haven’t really reached a point of having that discussion. I’m sure we will in due time as to whether it’s three-fourths or two-thirds or 50 percent or whatever it might be.

“But I don’t think some schools not being able to compete necessarily keeps a majority of the schools who could compete from competing. It’s premature to answer that question fully at this point.”

It’s nice to hear someone speaking and thinking positively but to me, it’s just more words at this point.  I remain hopeful for the schedule to at least start on time but to think we know how things will even look three weeks from now, let alone three months, we’re kidding ourselves.

Georgia football recruiting: 5-star RB TreVeyon Henderson sets commitment time

5-star Georgia football RB target Treveyon Henderson has announced his commitment time.

Georgia fans received some good news last week when five-star running back TreVeyon Henderson included the Bulldogs in his most recent cut.

Henderson cut his list of schools to nine: Georgia, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Texas, Ohio State, North Carolina, Penn State, Michigan and Oklahoma.

And now, it appears the 5-star ball carrier from Hopewell, Virginia is ready to commit.

On Thursday night, Henderson tweeted that he has made a decision, and then the following afternoon he posted that he will be committing at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Henderson ranks as the nation’s No. 17 overall prospect, No. 2 running back and No. 3 player in his state.

Ohio State is viewed as his leader, per the 247Sports Crystal Ball, which has 18 predictions going to the Buckeyes. Oklahoma and Virginia Tech are viewed as his other top choices.

The Buckeyes possess the nation’s top recruiting class for the 2021 cycle and recently landed a commitment from another elite running back, Georgia target Evan Pryor. If Ohio State lands both Pryor and Henderson in this class, that should secure the best 1-2 running back punch in 2021.

Henderson took a visit to Georgia in early February and holds over 40 offers.

Notre Dame Football: How 2019 Opponents Fared in Bowl Season

For those keeping score, Fighting Irish foes from this season went 3-5 in their respective bowl games.

The 2019 bowl season has come and gone (for the most part, two games actually still remain) and all of Notre Dame’s opponents from the season that just wrapped up have finished their seasons.

How did all do in the post-season?

Let’s take a look:

Louisville Cardinals:
38-28 win over Mississippi State in the Music City Bowl to finish 8-5

Georgia Bulldogs:
26-14 win over Baylor in the Sugar Bowl to wrap-up 12-2

Virginia Cavaliers:
36-28 loss to Florida in the Orange Bowl to finish 9-5

USC Trojans:
49-24 loss to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl to finish 8-5

Michigan Wolverines:
35-16 loss to Alabama in the Citrus Bowl to finish 9-4

Virginia Tech Hokies:
37-30 loss to Kentucky in the Belk Bowl to finish 8-5

Navy Midshipmen:
20-17 win over Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl to finish 11-2

Boston College Eagles:
Blown out 38-6 by Cincinnati in the Birmingham Bowl to finish 6-7

For those keeping score, Fighting Irish foes from this season went 3-5 in their respective bowl games.  New Mexico, Bowling Green, Duke and Stanford all failed to qualify for a bowl game.

Virginia snaps 15-game losing streak against Virginia Tech with thrilling finish

This incredible sack-fumble-TD sequence helped Virginia get the W.

With one incredible defensive play with about a minute left in the game, Virginia all but ensured it would snap its 15-game losing streak to Virginia Tech on Friday. The Cavaliers did, in fact, win, 39-30, to clinch the ACC Coastal division, and they’ll play Clemson for a conference championship next weekend.

Virginia kicked back-to-back field goals in the fourth quarter against the Hokies, and the second one was a 48-yarder that gave the Cavaliers a 33-30 lead with 1:23 left in the game. All they had to do was hold on, which seemed far easier said than done.

But on Virginia Tech’s next drive, quarterback Hendon Hooker was sacked three times. With 61 seconds left, UVA defensive end Mandy Alonso tackled Hooker in the end zone and forced a fumble, and defensive tackle Eli Hanback recovered it for what was basically the game-ending touchdown.

Here’s another angle:

Alonso entered Friday’s game with just one sack on the season, but he stepped up when it mattered most.

While defense helped the Cavaliers lock up the victory, their offense deserves recognition as well. Quarterback Bryce Perkins accounted for 475 of the team’s 492 total yards, completing 20-of-33 passes for 311 yards with one touchdown and an interception while also rushing for 164 yards and two more touchdowns.

Understandably, Virginia fans went nuts when the game was finally over and stormed the field. To put this win in perspective, the younger members of the school’s student body were toddlers the last time the Cavaliers took down Virginia Tech.

Virginia is the seventh different Coastal division winner in as many years, while Clemson is looking for its fifth consecutive ACC championship.

Here’s how college football Twitter reacted to UVA’s win.

North Shore (Texas) 4-star 2021 QB Dematrius Davis commits to Virginia Tech

Dematrius Davis, the athletic and influential dual-threat quarterback for defending Texas state champion North Shore, committed to Virginia Tech’s Class of 2021 ahead of numerous other scholarship offers from power programs.

Virginia Tech has lured one of the statement recruits of Justin Fuente’s tenure, but he won’t arrive on campus for more than a year.

Dematrius Davis, the four-star quarterback of 2018 USA TODAY Super 25 national runners-up North Shore (Houston, Texas), committed to Virginia Tech ahead of 21 other scholarship offers from elite programs. Davis is the third member of Virginia Tech’s Class of 2021 and the highest-rated quarterback commit under Fuente’s tenure, per 247Sports.

Chosen 25: 2020 Football Recruiting Rankings

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound signal caller is already one of the most explosive offensive football players in the Lone Star State, and could compete for playing time soon after arriving on campus. He’s a top-five rated dual-threat quarterback in his graduating class and a top-25 overall prospect from Texas in the Class of 2021.

Davis announced his decision in a video posted to Twitter that showcased a personal workout, followed by a brief track sprint and zippered sweatshirt reveal of a Virginia Tech shirt.

The influence of Davis’ commitment could go far beyond his ability on the field. By joining Virginia Tech’s class now, he could prove an influential draw for other elite players, and particularly other Texas prospects who might be looking for other options outside the crowded Texas programs in the Big XII and Texas A&M, which plays in the ACC.

That’s for the future. For now, Davis has plenty of work at hand in the Texas state playoffs. North Shore is scheduled to face Dobie (Houston, Texas) in a home playoff game Friday, Nov. 15 as their title defense gets started.

Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech odds: Hokies favored over Yellow Jackets

Previewing Saturday’s Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Virginia Tech Hokies (6-3, 3-2) travel to Atlanta to battle the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-7, 1-5) for a Saturday afternoon game (Bobby Dodd Stadium, 3:30 p.m. ET).

We analyze the Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: Three things you need to know

  1. The visiting team has won five of the last six in this series, which dates back to 1990. In this year’s meeting, the Hokies will be looking to avenge their worst conference loss since 2014, a 49-28 defeat to Georgia Tech on Oct. 25, 2018. The Yellow Jackets rambled for 465 rushing yards in that game.
  2. The new-look GT offense has scuffled in 2019. The Jackets still run the ball 62% of the time, but that plays into the strongest part of a VT defense ranked 34th in the nation both yards allowed per carry (3.7) and rushing yards allowed per game (132).
  3. The Hokies also like to run the ball (63% run share); that’s a negative for Georgia Tech which has coughed up nine rushing scores over the team’s last four games. GT ranks 119th in the nation rushing defense (211 yards per game).

Prediction

Virginia Tech 30, Georgia Tech 21

Moneyline (ML)

LAYING OFF the Georgia Tech -223 proposition. But a play of -210 or lower makes sense. So, watch the line.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Georgia Tech returns a profit of $4.48.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Georgia Tech’s 33-28 loss at Virginia last week was telling. The Yellow Jackets led that game at three different points, but a banged-up GT defense (missing numerous people from the early-season two-deep) couldn’t hold. The Jackets are 0-4 ATS at home (2-8 ATS in last 10 at Dodd Stadium).

PLAYING VIRGINIA TECH -5.5 (-110). VT has the more talented recruiting base, and the Hokies come in having won four of their last five. (The lone loss was by one point to then-No. 16 Notre Dame on Nov. 2.)

Over/Under (O/U)

A lean on the under 50.5 -115 but NO PLAY.
