Pitt vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

Is Kenny Pickett really in the Heisman race?

The fifth-year senior has been brilliant, averaging over ten yards per pass with 19 touchdown passes and just one pick as he has Pitt looking like a real, live contender in the ACC title chase.

Virginia Tech doesn’t quite have the offense to keep up if Pickett and the Panther attack go off.

The Hokies have an okay attack, but it has yet to get to 400 yards in any game, they don’t have enough of a ground game to take over, and now they have to deal with a defense that’s among the best in the nation in sacks and third down stops.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Virginia Tech has a pass rush, too.

No, the offense isn’t going to run out of the tunnel and hang 55 on the board, but the team won’t get flagged – it’s second in the nation behind only Army in fewest penalties – the special teams overall have been solid, and the defense has been terrific.

It’ll give up yards – especially though the air – and it’ll give up a big day to Pickett. But as long as the D can somehow keep the Panthers out of the end zone and the game in reach, the offense should be able to grind things out.

Virginia Tech is 4-0 when allowing 27 points or fewer, and it’s 0-2 when allowing that many or more, and …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt has yet to score fewer than 41 points.

How much of the Pitt fun is because it hasn’t played a slew of great defenses, and how much is it because it’s just that good? To be wishy-washy, it’s a little of both.

Virginia Tech already showed it could rise up and shut down a great O – it did that against North Carolina in the opener – but the combination of Pickett on one side and the great pass rush on the other should be enough to get out of a nasty road game with a terrific win.

Kirk Herbstreit ranks CFB’s top performing teams of opening week

ESPN College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit recently ranked his top-eight performing teams from Week 1.

This is not meant to be viewed as a power ranking, but simply which team performed the best given their circumstances.

This includes unranked teams beating ranked opponents (Virginia Tech beating UNC, UCLA beating and LSU), impressive victories (Georgia and Penn State), and some Group of Five schools (Charlotte and Northern Illinois) taking down big programs.

Here are Herbstreit’s top-eight performances from Week 1.

Report: Saints draft target Caleb Farley expected to be ready for training camp

Virginia Tech CB Caleb Farley received good news, meaning the draft prospect could recover from surgery by the start of Saints training camp

[mm-video type=video id=01f33ggm9sbz9v14pyrj playlist_id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f33ggm9sbz9v14pyrj/01f33ggm9sbz9v14pyrj-d2a63c3f6bd98903b0025553e68c22c2.jpg]

Stop if you’ve heard this before, but a highly talented draft prospect at a position of need for the Saints might be available once they’re on the clock. Expect he has a bit of an injury history. This is a story we’ve heard before; with Ryan Ramczyk in 2017, following offseason labrum surgery, and with Hau’oli Kikaha in 2015, after he had suffered two ACL injuries in college.

And those two players represent the different ends of the spectrum when injury concerns come into play. If it’s a chronic issue, it could end the player’s career before it gets off the ground. Or maybe they enjoy better health after turning pro. So which is it going to be for Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley?

NBC Sports’ Peter King reported Monday that Farley received good news from league doctors during medical rechecks in Indianapolis, where he was evaluated along with 150 other draft prospects. Farley went under the knife in March to repair a back issue he’s been battling since 2019, though he says everything is on track for him to take the NFL by storm. King wrote:

“Farley was told he’d need four months of rehab and recovery after the surgery, and that was the timetable the NFL medics saw over the weekend. ‘I got a lot of positive feedback from the NFL doctors,’ Farley said. ‘The NFL doctors confirmed I would be ready for the season, and they told me this is definitely not a chronic thing.’

Four months from the date of the surgery is July 23. Most NFL camps open July 27. So Farley, the top corner on some boards before his surgery, should be ready to go at the start of camp, per doctors. ‘I plan to be the best cornerback of my generation,’ he said. ‘I just can’t wait to get back in the pads again.’ Expect him to be a first-round corner, still.”

That’s certainly encouraging. Farley started 23 of the 24 games he appeared in for the Hokies, racking up 25 pass deflections and half a dozen interceptions. His game tape is as solid as any other cornerback in the draft class, and he passes any physical thresholds the Saints may have at 6-foot-1 and 197 pounds, with 33 3/8-inch arms and 8 3/4-inch hands (for a 76 1/4-inch wingspan). If he’s healthy, he can start immediately opposite Marshon Lattimore and maybe give New Orleans some long-term stability in the secondary.

But that’s the rub. Farley redshirted his 2017 freshman year while recovering from a torn ACL. His 2019 season was cut short by this weightlifting injury, which has continued to be a problem for him. It’s possible his body can’t hold up to NFL punishment, which is why he’s even projected to be available with the Saints picking at No. 28 overall. Given how badly they need help at the position and his otherwise strong resume, though, it’s very easy to envision New Orleans rolling the dice on him. We’ll see how it plays out in just three short weeks.

Notre Dame Football vs. ACC teams all-time

How has Notre Dame fared all-time against each member of the ACC? We’ve updated the numbers.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, if you consider yourself a Notre Dame football fan in even the smallest amount you’ve likely heard that the 2020 football season saw Notre Dame play an ACC schedule.

That got me wondering what kind of success Notre Dame has had against ACC foes.  Some have had long histories of playing the Irish while others only really came into the picture since Notre Dame’s “friends with benefits” deal went down just over a half-decade ago.

So how has Notre Dame fared against everyone in the ACC and who won the most recent match-ups?

Games vs. The Atlantic: Boston College, Syracuse

Missed Teams From The Atlantic: Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Wake Forest

Virginia Tech Hokies Football Schedule Analysis: Starting out against North Carolina at home will set the tone for the rest of the season. With that, a trip to West Virginia, and with Notre Dame up early, it’s a tough first half of the season. However, six of the first seven games are in Blacksburg.

And then comes the second half of the year with four of the last five games on the road including Miami and the rivalry game against Virginia. However, there’s no Clemson on the slate

Virginia Tech Hokies Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: 10-2. The Hokies are just that good, they get by West Virginia on the road and North Carolina and Notre Dame at home, and it’s a great start to offset a few tough losses – possibly at Miami and with one other hiccup – with a shot at winning the Coastal going into the Virginia game.

Virginia Tech Hokies Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: 6-6. The season starts with a thud against North Carolina, there’s a loss at West Virginia, and dropping the home games against Notre Dame and Pitt are disastrous. The road games in the second half of the year don’t help with losses in three of those four away from home.

Twitter reacts: South Carolina hires Shane Beamer as head coach

The South Carolina Gamecocks have hired Shane Beamer as their head coach. Beamer previously coached under Kirby Smart at UGA.

The South Carolina Gamecocks have hired Shane Beamer as their head coach. The Gamecocks recently fired Will Muschamp, who played football for the University of Georgia from 1991-1994.

Shane Beamer is the son of legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. Shane will look to replicate some of his father’s success with the Gamecocks.

Shane Beamer has a lot of good coaching ties. He coached under Kirby Smart at Georgia as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator from 2016-2018. Beamer then left to become assistant head coach under Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma.

Beamer’s previously had coaching stints under Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, under Phillip Fulmer at Tennessee, and more. Shane Beamer has been around some of the top minds in college football coaching, but he will have a tall task ahead of himself at South Carolina. The Gamecocks are struggling in recruiting and are regularly getting outclassed by Clemson.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to South Carolina’s latest head coaching hire:

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Virginia Tech Hokies Offense 3 Things To Know

Before getting going, few teams are going to be more fluid than Virginia Tech. Almost no one has dealt with the transfer portal more, and no one has had crazier things happen to its receiving corps.

The Hokies finished 86th in the nation in total offense and averaged just under 31 points per game, but there are plenty of reasons for hope for a huge seasons, despite all the wild changes.

Start with that receiving corps. Leading touchdown guy Damon Hazelton – coming up with eight scores – is now a Missouri Tiger, and the 16 combined 2019 catches from Hezekiah Grimsley and Phil Patterson are leaving the building. However, most of the other transfers leaving were reserves who hadn’t done much, and 6-3, 205-pound Evan Fairs is coming in from Kansas after making 28 career grabs.

Leading receiver Tre Turner is back after making 34 grabs for 553 yards and four scores, and speedy Tayvion Robinson will do more after a good freshman season. Tight end Dalton Keene was taken in the third round by New England, but junior James Mitchell is back – he’s a solid deep threat.

And all of the receivers have a rising star throwing their way.

CFN in 60 Video: Virginia Tech Hokies Preview
[jwplayer fXMYAJSw]

Hendon Hooker flirted with the transfer portal before last year, came back, and took over the starting gig after the first month of the season. The 6-4, 228-pounder hit 61% of his passes for 1,555 yards and 13 touchdowns, but his big claim to fame was being careful with the ball – the two interceptions he threw in the loss to Virginia were his only two picks of the year. He also ran for five scores – he’s the franchise star.

6-4, 245-pound sophomore Quincy Patterson is a decent prospect battling former Oregon transfer Braxton Burmeister to be the main backup.

The transfer portal took away plenty of receivers, but it also brought the Hokies some terrific running backs – a must with leading rusher Deshawn McClease leaving early. 5-9, 205-pound grad transfer Khalil Herbert comes in from Kansas where he ran for 1,735 career yards and 14 scores. He’s ready to roll right away, but the instant eligibility of speedy Rutgers star Raheem Blackshear is still in question.

Devastating as a runner or a receiver, Blackshear will eventually fill a variety of roles – he ran for 912 yards and six scores and caught 80 passes for 810 yards and six touchdowns in just over two seasons. Combine these two with 5-11, 182-pound sophomore Keshawn King – he was third on the team with 340 yards and two scores – and the Hokies have a nice backfield.

They’ll all have a great-looking line to work behind. Three reserve options left through the transfer portal, but all five starters – all underclassmen last year – are expected to return including All-ACC performers tackle Christian Darrisaw and guard Lecitus Smith on the left side. It’s a big, good line that should become a big plus.
