UTSA Roadrunners Preview 2022

Head coach Jeff Traylor is putting together a powerhouse.

UTSA has been strong since entering life in the FBS world with five winning seasons since 2012 and three bowl appearances in the last six years. But it was Traylor – a first time head coach when he took over just before the 2020 season – who solidified the style.

Tough lines, balanced attack, aggressive defense that gets into the backfield, and no mistakes. UTSA was first in Conference USA in fewest penalties per game and No. 1 in turnover margin.

This year’s team might not have quite the same magic, but it’s got more than enough talent and returning all-stars to repeat as the Conference USA champion before going to the American Athletic Conference in 2023.

2022 is about to prove 2021 wasn’t a fluke – it was a jumping off point.

UTSA Roadrunners Preview 2022: Offense

The offense was tough, efficient, and it should be every bit as good again with eight starters expected back. The Roadrunners averaged 439 yards and 37 points per game, the ground game was the second-best in Conference USA, there weren’t a ton of turnovers, and moving the chains wasn’t a problem. As long as the downfield passing game is a wee bit stronger, expect even more production even though …

The star of the show is gone. Sincere McCormick was one of the nation’s most productive backs over the last few years, but he left early for the NFL – eventually getting picked up by the Las Vegas Raiders, but No. 2 back Brendan Brady returns after running for 308 yards and four scores.

McCormick, though, ran for close to 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns – that heavy lifting will likely be done by Trelon Smith, a veteran back from Arkansas who ran for over 1,300 yards and ten scores with the Hogs.

Everything works behind a line that should be among the best in Conference USA. Four starters are back – three of them were all-stars – around Second Team All-Conference USA center Ahofitu Maka as the anchor of a massive interior.

Frank Harris is back for what seems like his 14th year with the program – it’s his fourth year as the Roadrunner quarterback – coming off a Second Team All-Conference USA season throwing for close to 3,200 yards with 27 touchdowns and six picks, and finishing second on the team with 561 rushing yards and six touchdowns – he caught a TD pass, too.

He’s got a loaded group of receivers to work with. Zachari Franklin is back after catching 81 passes for 1,027 yards and 12 scores, Joshua Cephus caught 71 passes for 819 yards and six scores, and De’Corian Clark caught 52 balls for 755 yards and seven touchdowns. Include the return of TE Oscar Cardenas, and the passing game has its targets.

UTSA Roadrunners Preview 2022: Defense

The defense wasn’t as strong as the offense, but it did a phenomenal job against the run, allowed an okay 25 points per game, and it comes back strong with five all-stars and enough depth and transfers to play around with the alignment.

The secondary should be a plus. Tariq Woolen and his 4.2 speed at safety are gone to the Seattle Seahawks, but Rashad Wisdom is one of the nation’s best safeties who still flies under the radar.

He led the team with 88 tackles, the corner combination of Corey Mayfield and Ken Robinson made plenty of plays, and on the way is Nicktroy Fortune from West Virginia at corner and safety Quinton Cage from LSU to help fill in the gaps.

The inside linebacker combination of Jamal Ligon and Trevor Harmanson made 106 stops last year and should be a rock against the run again. They’re back along with Dadrian Taylor on the weakside to form one of the better groups in Conference USA.

Up front is 305-pound Brandon Brown on the nose – he held up with 23 tackles as the anchor of the line, and Trumane Bell is back on one end after finishing second on the team with five sacks.

Former Razorback Trelon Smith is on the move again

The Razorbacks’ second-leading rusher from 2021 is headed to UTSA months after committing to transfer to TCU.

Arkansas’ second-leading rusher from last season has announced his second transfer destination since January.

[autotag]Trelon Smith[/autotag], the premier back of the Razorback offense in 2021, announces that he will be transferring to UT-San Antonio after originally committing to TCU in January, he tweeted on Wednesday.

Smith saw significant playing time during his two seasons as a Razorback. In two seasons, Smith rushed for 1,308 yards and ten touchdowns. He rushed for 598 yards in 2021, which was second-best on the team behind KJ Jefferson. He was a dual-threat in the Hog offense in 2020, rushing for 710 yards and five touchdowns, and caught 22 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown.

Prior to his time in Arkansas, Smith played in 13 games over two seasons at Arizona State, where he rushed for 60 yards on 12 carries.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Texas mentioned twice on On3’s most intriguing nonconference games of 2022

All eyes on Texas. Two of their three nonconference games are considered among the top 25 to watch this season.

After an underwhelming 5-7 record to kick off his Texas tenure last season, all eyes will be on Steve Sarkisian in 2022.

That’s not to say that it’s a championship or bust mentality, but his team must showcase significant improvements. The Longhorns certainly have the talent on the roster to compete for a Big 12 title, and anything fewer than four losses this year should be considered a step in the right direction.

Texas will be tested early on prior to starting conference play, and each of their three nonconference games will fortunately be played at Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium in Austin.

Mike Huguenin of On3 recently ranked the best nonconference matchups on the schedule for the 2022 college football season. Texas was mentioned twice among the top 25 games mentioned.

Up first is one that many wouldn’t initially expect to be on a list of this nature. At No. 25, Huguenin put Texas vs. UTSA on Sept. 17 as one to watch.

This will be the first meeting between the schools, and it comes a week after Texas will have played Alabama. Will there be any kind of hangover for the Longhorns? UTSA won 12 games and the Conference USA title last season; while the Roadrunners don’t figure to be as good as they were in 2021, this is a solid program filled with players who weren’t recruited by Texas. Thus, think of it as a chance for the little guy to stick a finger (or maybe even a fist) in the eye of the bully on the block.

Much higher on Huguenin’s list at No. 4 is a matchup that most of the college football landscape is excited to see, Alabama at Texas on Sept. 10. This will serve as a good measuring stick for the Longhorns.

This will be just the 10th meeting all-time between these storied programs — and the first-regular-season game since 1922. Yep, 100 years. The most recent meeting was the BCS Championship Game following the 2009 season, and that is the Tide’s lone win over the Longhorns. This will be Game 2 in Steve Sarkisian’s second season at Texas, and everyone knows how Nick Saban treats his former assistants. Texas has some interesting offensive pieces, but how good is the Longhorns’ offensive line? And can Texas’ defense slow Alabama’s offense?

UTSA vs Southern Miss Game Preview, C-USA Tournament

Why UTSA Will Win

Southern Miss is having problems.

It beat Southeastern Baptist on January 19th. That’s the team’s only victory in the last 18 games.

It’s struggling to score, there’s nothing from three, and the defense is getting hampered way too easily thanks to a ton of turnovers leading to easy points. It’s not just they’re losing; they’re getting blown out.

UTSA doesn’t shoot well, but it comes up with a ton of offensive rebounds. It’s the best team on the boards in Conference USA, and Southern Miss can’t do anything on the glass.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Yeah, Southern Miss is 1-18 in its last 19 games. That ugly win started after a win over UTSA.

The Roadrunners are 3-14 in their last 17 games because it doesn’t soot well enough and the defense doesn’t generate enough stops.

Ball movement is a problem and getting easy shots hasn’t been easy. Southern Miss has a whole slew of problems, but it’s not bad at coming up with blocked shots.

These two are equally bad, but on the plus side, they play interesting games because they’re at the same level.

UTSA is just a wee bit better from the field and from three.

College Football Playoff Rankings Projection

After Oregon was blasted at Utah, how will the latest CFP rankings look this week?

The 12th week of college football was a week of extremes.  Two top 10 teams fell but neither were favored and one lost to a higher ranked team, so upsets isn’t the right word but a shakeup is certainly coming to the College Football Playoff rankings when they’re released Tuesday night.

After Ohio State blew out Michigan State, Utah routed Oregon, and a surprisingly exciting game between No. 2 Alabama and No. 24 Arkansas, how will the new CFP rankings look?

Here is our best guess as to what the fourth set of rankings will look like:
