The inaugural USFL draft has come to an end after 35 rounds between Day 1 and Day 2. The USFL draft is quite a bit different than the NFL draft with certain position groups are assigned to specific rounds.

The first round of the USFL draft saw two former Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks selected with the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks. Several other former Chiefs players were part of the draft pool and selected in the remaining rounds.

Here’s a quick look at the former Chiefs players selected below:

Chiefs to sign Maine CB Manny Patterson following rookie minicamp tryout

Another rookie minicamp tryout is joining the Kansas City Chiefs, this time on the defensive side of the ball.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to make some changes to their 90-man offseason roster following rookie minicamp, signing a player who attended on a tryout contract. This time the Chiefs have added former UMaine cornerback Manny Patterson.

Patterson (5-10, 180 pounds) started 44 career games for the Black Bears from 2016-2019, notching 113 total tackles, three interceptions and 54 passes defended during that span. He earned honors as Maine’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016, while earning three All-CAA selections during his final three seasons in college.

An ACL injury ended his Senior campaign early, but that wouldn’t prove to be the only challenge that he faced as he pursued an NFL career. The COVID-19 pandemic wouldn’t allow for a pro day and the opportunities to make an impression as an undrafted free agent weren’t as plentiful.

“This journey has been far from easy for me,” Patterson told Chiefs Wire. “From tearing my ACL at the end of my senior year, and not being able to have an all-star game invite, no combine, no pro day. To finally find myself with the AFC Champions is amazing.”

Despite the challenges that mounted from his injury and the COVID-19 pandemic, Patterson persevered. He earned a workout opportunity with the Washington Football Team during the season and was signed to their practice squad. He was eventually released and landed another workout opportunity with the Houston Texans, spending time on their practice squad as well during 2020.

During rookie minicamp with the Chiefs, Patterson once again had a chance to make an impression on a team. He knows that earning this contract on the 90-man offseason roster was only the first step. Now, he’ll embark on an entirely new journey to make the 53-man roster.

“The fans need to know they are getting the best version of me,” Patterson told Chiefs Wire. “I appreciate all the love from them and am so thankful just to the Chiefs for this opportunity. But like you said it isn’t finished yet. (I) still have a lot more to get through & (I’m going to) keep giving it my all.”

Texans work out defensive line, receivers, defensive back over Thanksgiving weekend

The Houston Texans worked out two defensive linemen, two receivers, and a defensive back over the Thanksgiving holiday.

When NFL teams say that talent evaluation is a 365-day-a-year job, they aren’t exaggerating.

The Houston Texans spent a portion of the Thanksgiving holiday looking at four free agents. On Friday, the club brought in defensive tackle Lee Autry, defensive end T.J. Carter, receiver Kalija Lipscomb, and receiver J’Mon Moore for workouts. The club also brought in defensive back Manny Patterson for a visit.

Autry is an undrafted free agent who spent time with the Chicago Bears in training camp. In his last 18 games with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Autry produced 23 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sack, and a pass breakup.

Carter, another undrafted free agent, played in 39 games for the Kentucky Wildcats, recording 60 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, and four pass deflections.

Lipscomb was also undrafted, but spent time recently with the Kansas City Chiefs during training camp and the Green Bay Packers on their practice squad. For the Vanderbilt Commodores, Lipscomb caught 198 passes for 2,356 yards and 22 touchdowns in 46 games.

Moore is a nearby Fort Bend Elkins product who played collegiately for the Missouri Tigers. Going undrafted in 2018, Moore caught on with the Packers, where he spent that season. In 2019-20, Moore was with the Cleveland Browns on their practice squad and offseason roster. At the end of training camp this season, the Browns released Moore.

Patterson is an undrafted free agent from Maine, where he collected 93 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 47 pass breakups, and an interception in 39 games.
