Only two Big Ten teams remained in the last USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll before the NCAA Tournament:

After falling to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament, the Wisconsin Badgers remained soundly outside the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll on Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern dropped from its spot at No. 25 to unranked after the Wildcats were upset by Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal. The Nittany Lions also surprised Indiana in the semifinal, which caused the Hoosiers to fall from No. 17 to No. 19 in the latest poll.

The USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll top 10 for this week is Virginia(10), Gonzaga(9), Arizona(8), Texas(7), UCLA(6), Kansas(5), Marquette(4), Purdue(3), Alabama(2) and Houston(1).

While the NCAA Tournament will be underway on Thursday, the Wisconsin Badgers will return to action against Bradley in the NIT on Tuesday night.

The Wisconsin Badgers went 1-1 again this week, although they nearly beat the No. 3-ranked Purdue Boilermakers in a nailbiter on Thursday night. The close loss and victory over Minnesota on Sunday were not enough to bring the Badgers into the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

The saga between Northwestern and Maryland in the poll continued this week as the Wildcats climbed back into the poll at No. 25, while the Terrapins went from No. 24 to unranked. Maryland has lost their last two games to Penn State and Ohio State.

The USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll for this week includes Baylor(10), Arizona(9), Gonzaga(8), Texas(7), Marquette(6), Alabama(5), Kansas(4), Purdue(3), UCLA(2) and Houston(1).

It should be interesting to see how the Big Ten shakes out come Selection Sunday, especially with the Big Ten Tournament beginning on Wednesday.

Houston, UCLA lead USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll entering conference tournaments

Checking in on the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll ahead of Power Five conference tournaments.

For the third straight week, the Houston Cougars remain the country’s top-ranked team in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Cougars received 29 of 31 first-place votes in the latest poll.

UCLA comes in behind Houston at No. 2, with Purdue, Kansas, and Alabama rounding out the top five. The Bruins and Boilermakers both moved up two spots from No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, while the Jayhawks and Crimson Tide fell in this week’s ranking from No. 3 and No. 2.

Also coming in within the top 10 are Marquette, Texas, Gonzaga, Arizona, and Baylor.

This week’s biggest mover was the Duke Blue Devils, moving up nine spots from being unranked to No. 21 after wins over North Carolina State and North Carolina. Connecticut had the second biggest move up the rankings this week, moving from No. 18 to inside the top-15 at No. 14.

This week’s biggest losers are Tennessee and Providence. Tennessee fell five spots from No. 14 to No. 19, while Providence fell from No. 20 to outside the top-25; they’re currently the first team out of the top-25.

After a tough overtime loss to the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon, the Wisconsin Badgers remain soundly outside the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

There was some movement among Big Ten teams, as the Maryland Terrapins went undefeated this past week with wins over Northwestern and Minnesota to bring them into the poll at No. 24. The Wildcats lost two games last week, as they also fell to the Illinois Fighting Illini on the road. They subsequently dropped from No. 22 to unranked in this week’s poll.

Maryland rises, Virginia stumbles in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The top teams remained in place as Virginia strumbled after back-to-back losses to unranked foes.

The top of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll remained the same this week as the Houston Cougars and Alabama Crimson Tide remained in the top two spots. The top five remained intact but the placement of the Kansas Jayhawks and UCLA Bruins flipped after another week of action.

The biggest winners of the week belong to the Maryland Terrapins jumping up six spots to crack the top 25 as they land at No. 24. The Terps defeated Minnesota on Wednesday and followed that up on Sunday with an upset win over then-ranked No. 22 Northwestern.

Our biggest losers are the Virginia Cavaliers, who fell six spots this week to No. 12. The Cavaliers lost back-to-back games against unranked opponents. Boston College won 63-48 on Wednesday, and North Carolina followed that up with a 71-63 victory on Saturday.

Northwestern jumped into the latest poll alongside Purdue and Indiana after upsetting them both and knocking off the Iowa Hawkeyes last week. The Wildcats went from unranked up to No. 22, while the Boilermakers and Hoosiers dropped two spots to No. 5 and No. 17.

Elsewhere around the Big Ten, Illinois and Indiana, both jumped back into the poll at No. 25 and No. 22, while Purdue retained its throne as the No.1-ranked team in the county. The Hoosiers and Fighting Illini have gone undefeated over the past week and have emerged atop the Big Ten below the Boilermakers.

The Badgers were ranked as No. 18 last week and are currently ranked as the fifth team outside the poll receiving votes. Illinois was the only Big Ten team to sneak back into the poll after last week’s dropout and is ranked at No. 23. The Purdue Boilermakers maintained their spot at No. 3.

It was a tough week for the Big Ten in the latest poll, as three teams fell out including Illinois from No. 24, Ohio State from No. 23 and Indiana from No. 19. Even Purdue dropped two spots to No. 3, after falling to Rutgers 65-64 last Monday.
