Texas, UConn, Indiana to play in Empire Classic hoops series

Texas could face UConn, the 2023 NCAA Champions early next season.

The Texas basketball schedule appears to be ramping up next season. After a respectable schedule saw the Longhorns face Gonzaga, Creighton, and Illinois, the team is already set to play high profile games next season.

Earlier this week, we learned that Texas would reunite with former head coach Shaka Smart and the Marquette Golden Eagles in the Big 12-Big East Battle. Smart pulled off a surprising AP National Coach of the Year bid this season after helping his team to a No. 2 seed. Marquette fell to the Michigan State Spartans in the Round of 32.

Now it appears the Longhorns will join UConn, Indiana, and Louisville in New York for the Empire Classic in early November. The early season series gives Texas the opportunity to face two of the top coaches in college basketball, UConn’s Danny Hurley and Indiana’s Mike Woodson.

The low stakes series of games gives Texas head coach Rodney Terry and company a chance to simulate tournament style basketball with their new look team. The games kick off Nov. 19 toward the start of next season.

Even though the Wisconsin Badgers remain outside the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, two Big Ten teams moved around significantly after a turbulent week.

The Purdue Boilermakers fell down two spots to No. 3 after their upset loss to the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Indiana Hoosiers climbed up the poll three spots to No. 15 because of significant conference victories over Rutgers and Michigan this past week.

The USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll top 10 for this week includes Marquette(10), Baylor(9), Arizona(8), Kansas(7), Virginia(6), Texas(5), UCLA(4), Purdue(3), Houston(2) and Alabama(1).

It should be interesting to see if Big Ten teams like Illinois and Maryland, who have been playing well as of late, will be able to work their way back into the poll alongside Indiana and Purdue in the coming weeks.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin basketball falls to Indiana 63-45 on the road

The Wisconsin Badgers fell 63-45 on the road to the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday afternoon:

On Saturday afternoon, the Wisconsin Badgers could not contain Indiana in the second half allowing 45 points in their 63-45 road loss to the Hoosiers. Indiana was aided by a monster game from forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists.

The Badgers struggled to put points on the board throughout the game and had only one player finish with double-digit scoring. Freshman guard Connor Essegian led Wisconsin with 14 points and 11 rebounds in his first game back in his home state. Unfortunately, even Essegian was 4-13 from the field, with the team as whole finishing with a 32.1 field goal percentage.

The Badgers will head back home on Tuesday night to face off against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

How to watch Wisconsin basketball against the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday afternoon:

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday afternoon, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

After a tough loss against Michigan State, the Badgers will have an opportunity to rebound against a reeling Hoosiers team that has lost their last three games. Similar to Wisconsin losing forward Tyler Wahl to injury, Indiana has been without starting forward Race Thompson in its previous two losses.

Wisconsin guard Connor Essegian had 13 points against the Spartans and has stepped up in Wahl’s absence alongside forward Steven Crowl and point guard Chucky Hepburn. Unfortunately, the Badgers did not get enough from the rest of their rotation to hold off Michigan State. Wisconsin will need more scoring from starters like Max Klesmit, Carter Gilmore and Jordan Davis if Wahl cannot play.

It should be an exciting game to watch as both teams are looking to end their losing streaks in their Big Ten schedule.

Every Big Ten team moved up in the latest poll, including Michigan State and Purdue moving from unranked to No. 25 and 24. However, no Big Ten teams could crack the top 10 as Indiana was the Conference’s highest-ranked team at No. 13.

D’Mitrik Trice’s late heroics lift Wisconsin over Indiana in double OT

The Badgers outlast Indiana at the Kohl Center

No. 8 Wisconsin got all they could handle and then some from Indiana on Thursday night at the Kohl Center. The Hoosiers brought energy from the opening tip, and erased a five-point halftime deficit to go up six with just under six minutes remaining.

The after hours D’Mitrik Trice show ultimately lifted the Badgers to an 80-73 double overtime win that was anything but routine.

Indiana brought early energy, both on the floor and on their bench. Similarly to Wisconsin’s loss against Maryland, it felt like the Hoosier bench was up and active, cheering, and the louder of the two sidelines at the Kohl Center. Without second-leading scorer Armaan Franklin, everybody knew the basketball would be in Trayce Jackson-Davis’s hands even more, and he brought his best.

16 second-half points for Jackson-Davis flipped the game on its head, as he walked all over Wisconsin bigs Micah Potter and Nate Reuvers on the interior. With the Badgers down six and under six minutes left, Wisconsin clamped down on defense and got themselves to the free throw line to get back in it. From then on, it was D’Mitrik Trice’s world, we were just living in it. Combining for 11 points on 4-5 shooting in the last two minutes of regulation and the overtimes, Wisconsin’s point guard looked like a superstar.

After Trice tied the game with a floater in regulation, Jackson-Davis had the chance to win it for Indiana. His left-handed layup rolled off the rim and the two Big Ten foes headed to overtime.

The first overtime was nearly a replay of regulation. With the Badgers down a deuce and just 21 seconds remaining, Trice tied the game with a jumper and the Hoosiers had the final chance. Hounding defense from Brad Davison and Wisconsin forced a second overtime.

After not playing the final 6:38 of regulation and overtime likely due to defensive struggles and an altercation on Wisconsin’s bench, Potter re-entered in the second overtime and the Badgers went on a 6-0 run to close the game out. Potter’s re-entry at that moment didn’t spark the run, but it was when the difference making plays came from Tyler Wahl. Wahl hit consecutive threes to give the Badgers a seven point lead that they would never let go of in the second extra session.

It wasn’t the smoothest of rides, but in the end the Badgers got to their destination. On Trice’s night, he lead Wisconsin with 21 points, a majority of which came late into the evening. The Badgers improved to 10-2 and 4-1 in the Big Ten, while the Hoosiers dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten.

In the first half of today’s game against the Indiana Hoosiers, D’Mitrik Trice looked like the true point guard he has become for the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin leads 29-24 at half behind Trice and Micah Potter leading the way offensively

Potter has continued to his from the win over Minnesota, where he had 18 points and 11 rebounds. The dunk came from an elite find by Trice that left the Wisconsin big with an open path to the hoop. Trice has five points, five assists and two rebounds already in the game for Wisconsin and continues to be a leader for the Badgers.

Although the Badgers let the game get close at the beginning of the first half, they have since righted the ship and have a five-point lead going into halftime. If Wisconsin can limit runs by Indiana in the second half, they should be able to close out this game against the injured Hoosiers.
