Anthony Richardson still doesn’t have a TD pass in 2022

Anthony Richardson still has sky-high potential, but he’s struggling to make a positive impact through the air this season

Despite his lofty potential, Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson has stumbled out of the gates a bit.

Even in the Gators’ upset win over then-No. 7 Utah in their season opener, Richardson did most of his damage on the ground. After back-to-back forgettable performances in a loss to Kentucky and a near-loss to USF, Richardson’s still having a hard time finding success through the air.

Through three games so far this season, Richardson has thrown four interceptions, and not a single touchdown pass.

There’s still plenty to like about Richardson’s skill set, talent and potential, but it’s clear that he’s still got plenty of development to go through before he’s ready to make the successful leap to the next level as a potential franchise quarterback.

Pump the brakes on the Anthony Richardson hype train

Back-to-back forgettable performances have proven just how much development Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson still needs

Heading into the 2022 college football season, few prospects were as intriguing and promising at Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson.

After a massive upset win in The Swamp over then-No. 7 Utah, Richardson’s draft stock went through the roof, sending him flying up into the same mock draft stratosphere as Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud and Alabama’s Bryce Young.

Just as quickly, it seems the hype surrounding Richardson has come back down to earth after back-to-back performances that revealed just how much development he still needs as a pro quarterback prospect.

The week after taking down Utah, Richardson struggled in a 26-16 loss to Kentucky, completing just 14 of his 35 pass attempts for 143 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. He wasn’t even his typically dynamic self as a runner in that game either, managing just four yards on six rushing attempts.

Those struggles continued Saturday night, as the Gators barely escaped an upset loss at home to USF, needing a pair of fumbled snaps on the Bulls’ final drive to seal a 31-28 victory. Richardson went 10-for-18 through the air for just 112 yards, once again with no touchdowns and a pair of picks. On the ground, he tallied only 24 yards on seven carries.

In both disappointing performances, Richardson struggled with accuracy, ball placement, decision-making and anticipation, many of the most important traits NFL scouts and executives are looking for in a potential franchise quarterback.

Richardson may yet develop into that kind of player, but these last two weeks have proven that he’s just not there yet.

Former Georgia Bulldog, SEC analyst predicts Florida’s season

Will the Florida Gators win more games than 2022’s effort? Florida went 6-7 last season.

Former Georgia Bulldog offensive tackle and SEC Network analyst Matt Stinchcomb predicts that the Florida Gators will go 6-6 during the 2022 college football season. Stinchcomb has the Gators starting the season 1-3.

Florida does have a tough schedule start to the season, but we think they’ll win at least one game against Utah, Kentucky, or Tennessee. We especially like Florida’s chances against the Volunteers. The Gators have won 16 of the last 17 games against Tennessee. Yes, Tennessee has a better team on paper, yet Florida always seems to win with relative ease.

Florida starting quarterback Anthony Richardson is very talented and should be able to help the Gators pull off a few upsets in head coach Billy Napier’s debut season. Additionally, the Gators always have a talented secondary.

It won’t take long to find out if Florida is good. The Gators open the season against last year’s Pac-12 champion, Utah. The Utes are ranked as a one of the top teams in the country.

Here’s Stinchcomb’s full prediction for Florida’s season:

Do you agree with Stinchcomb’s preseason prediction for Florida? We think it is being a little bit harsh on the Gators, but it is not outside of the realm of possibility.

Ultimately, if Florida wants to have an eight or nine win season, then the Gators must perform better in one score games. Last season, Florida went 1-4 in one-possession games.
