Notable names to know during the G League bubble season

Top prospects like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green are competing against NBA veterans like Jeremy Lin.

The 2021 NBA G League season, featuring big names like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green, kicked off Wednesday afternoon.

Even before the pandemic, this season was going to look and feel different than any other because it was the debut of the G League Ignite squad. This is the inaugural campaign for the team, an alternative to the NCAA that offers a pathway to the NBA for top prospects.

But this season is also different than normal because, just like the NBA did to finish out the 2019-20 season, the league is playing in a bubble location at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex in Florida.

The seventeen teams that opted into playing will have a condensed schedule of fifteen games between Feb. 10-March 6. Single-elimination playoffs begin on March 8 and the NBA G League Finals is on March 11.

Below are some of the most interesting players worth tracking as the games continue over the next few weeks.

Notable NBA veterans who are eligible for 2021 G League Draft

When the upcoming NBA G League season tips off next months, fans can expect to see more familiar faces than they would in a typical year.

The NBA G League is hosting a bubble tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex in Florida. Once teams are assembled, they will arrive to the location by January 26 for physicals and onboarding. The first game is set for February 8 and teams are expected to play a “12-to-15 game schedule” before their single-elimination playoffs from March 5-March 9.

This offseason, per ESPN, the league also eliminated restrictions for signing players with at least five years of NBA experience. For example, as reported by Adam Johnson, this is how Jeremy Lin was able to sign outright with the Santa Cruz Warriors rather than enter the draft pool. This is reportedly a one-time exception for the G League.

Similarly, others with NBA experience signed outright as veteran mentors for the inaugural G League Ignite squad. Players like Amir Johnson and Bobby Brown will lend a hand for top prospects like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green as they transition to the pros.

Otherwise, however, players not already on a roster who are looking to get back on the court and play in the upcoming bubble season will have to hear their names called on Monday. Over the last few days, we have learned about several players (e.g. Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson) who recently signed NBA G League Standard Player Contracts.

Even those who have been around the league for years have no guarantee of being selected, though. There are only 17 teams playing in the bubble, as 12 have opted out.

While the draft will have a maximum of 26 players selected, teams are allowed to forfeit their picks, so that number could end up even smaller. But that has not swayed the nearly 200 players who are hopeful about suiting up in Florida.

The 2021 G League Draft is scheduled for Monday, January 11, at 1:15 PM EST. Below are some of the most notable candidates, listed in order of how many minutes they have played in the NBA:

Klutch Sports adds pair of Knicks to growing roster of NBA players

LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, adds pair of Knicks to growing roster of NBA players.

Rich Paul and his agency, Klutch Sports, announced the signing of a pair of New York Knicks on Thursday. According to posts on Klutch’s official Twitter account, Allonzo Trier and Mitchell Robinson have officially joined  the agency that also represents the likes of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Trier has appeared in 20 games this season for the Knicks while starting one. He is averaging six points on 44% shooting in just over 12 minutes per contest. Robinson, meanwhile, has appeared in 51 games and is converting a staggering 73% of his field goal attempts. He’s also averaging nine points and seven rebounds in just under 23 minutes per game.

Trier went undrafted in 2018 after starring at the University of Arizona. The 24-year-old shooting guard is originally from Seattle, Washington. Trier is currently inactive but did score 22 points against the Brooklyn Nets earlier this year.

Robinson was a McDonald’s All-American as a high schooler in 2017 before becoming the No. 36 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by New York. He has posted several double-doubles this season highlighted by a 22-point, 13-rebound effort in a win against the Atlanta Hawks.
