Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Quinn Ewers commitment and impact’

The Locked on Longhorns kicks off your week discussing the commitment of Quinn Ewers to Texas. How does that impact the team moving forward.

In a wild weekend, the Texas Longhorns secured their second perfect-rating recruit. The No. 1 player of the 2022 class, Quinn Ewers, committed to play for his childhood team. Ewers is a program-changing player, so what kind of impact does this make on the recruiting front? Seems as though top players from across the country are lining up to have the opportunity to play with him.

The quarterback room is suddenly loaded with Hudson Card, Ja’Quinden Jackson, Casey Thompson, Jalen Milroe (2021) and Ewers (2022). In the post-Ehlinger era, how does it all play out? Will someone change positions? Will someone eventually leave?

In the funny story of the weekend, current Texas A&M tight end Blake Smith tweeted he would sign up to play with Ewers. Was he telling others to come to Texas? Or was it a brief brain lapse that caused him to tweet that and immediately remove it?

The wide receiver group was dealt a blow with the injury to freshman Troy Omeire. Over the weekend, we were told by head coach Tom Herman that he “tweaked” his knee, but it was later confirmed he tore his ACL. With him out for the season, how does that impact the group?

Athletic director Chris Del Conte confirmed in an email there will be fans in the stands. A total of 25 percent which equates to 25,000. It was later reported by Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman that Texas is planning zero allotments to opposing fans for home games. The annual Texas-OU Red River Rivalry will be split with each school getting 12.5 percent of tickets.

Plus Oklahoma’s top running back Kennedy Brooks has opted out of the 2020 season. What impact will that have on an already young team that lost its starting quarterback and top wide receiver to the NFL draft this past year.

Countdown to Texas Footballl: Best to wear No. 82

Countdown to Texas Longhorns football continues with number 82. Which were the best Longhorns to wear the number?

The college football season is a mere 82 days away. The Texas Longhorns football team will begin their voluntary workouts on Monday which gives us optimism that college football will be played on time. In continuing the series, Longhorns Wire takes a look back at the best players to wear 82.

Corbin James “Corby” Robertson, Defensive End-Linebacker (1966-68)

Corby Robertson first played for the Longhorns in 1966. He started out as a defensive end in that first season. The team would finish the year 7-4 with a Bluebonnet Bowl win over Ole Miss 19-0. They finished tied for second with Arkansas in the Southwest Conference, the edge going the Razorbacks’ way due to a 12-7 victory over Texas. Robertson would be named All-SWC defensive end.

In 1967 the Longhorns would finish 6-4 and third in the conference standings. They did not qualify for a bowl bid. Robertson would be named All-American at Linebacker as well as GTE Academic All-American for his work in the classroom.

In his senior season in 1968, Robertson would be named co-captain and once again Academic All-American. He was also given the team sportsmanship award. The Longhorns finished as SWC co-champions along with Arkansas. However, Texas defeated the Razorbacks 39-29 at Memorial Stadium in Austin.

After tying their first game and losing to Texas Tech, the Longhorns rattled off nine straight wins including a 36-13 drubbing of the eighth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers in the Cotton Bowl Classic. Robertson would be inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor in 1993.

Currently incoming freshman Troy Omeire wears number 82 for the Texas Longhorns. Omeire originally committed to the Aggies before the Longhorns were able to flip him last September. According to Max Preps, Omeire caught 149 passes for 2,432 yards and 31 touchdowns for Fort Bend Austin.
