Texas WR Troy Omeire begins rehab process, time frame to return is unknown

The debut of the highly-touted wide receiver Troy Omeire may have been delayed once more.

The debut of the highly-touted wide receiver Troy Omeire may be delayed once more. Omeire appeared to tweak his knee on Wednesday, forcing him to miss the Longhorns latest scrimmage on Saturday.

The redshirt freshman missed all of last season after suffering a torn ACL in a preseason scrimmage on Aug. 16, 2020. It was a huge let down for the team, as there were reports that he was the best looking receiver on the team up until the injury.

Omeire was expected to contend for a starting role again this season under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, and likely could have benefited from the game-like experience in the scrimmage.

On a deep ball underthrown by quarterback Casey Thompson during 7-on-7, Omeire went to make a move to catch the ball and ended up intertwined with defensive back D’Shawn Jamison and needed assistance to get off the field.

This also happened to be the first time Omeire had not been wearing a knee brace, which he had worn at every practice up until that one. However, he was able to stand on the sidelines shortly after without aid from crutches.

Sarkisian addressed Omeire’s situation on August 21.

“He’s in the rehab process. I don’t want to call it day-to-day, but I also don’t want to think it’s months either. I think the reality of this thing with him…It could be a week, maybe two, we’ll see, but we’re underway. We’re under the process of getting him back to 100-percent healthy and getting him back on the field.”

The Longhorns’ receiving room has been one of the weaker groups this offseason, and losing Omeire, even if it is just for a couple weeks, is not something the team needed.

Texas will have one more final scrimmage prior to the season, which will likely decide who will start at quarterback, but it also could solidify the depth at wide receiver with or without Omeire for now.

247Sports views wide receiver position as Texas’ biggest question mark

Which receiver will step up?

The Longhorns will have a very crucial scrimmage on Saturday, one that they hope will solidify starters all over the field.

The quarterback competition will receive most of the hype, but the position that 247Sports’ Josh Pate thinks the Longhorns should be really concerned about is the wide receiver group.

This is saying a lot considering Texas is in the middle of a quarterback battle for the first time in four years, and they have new players sliding into spots on the offensive line. He explained that outside of Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington, the Longhorns have not yet solidified a third or fourth guy to step up to prove they can be a consistent playmaker.

Although Joshua Moore is the Longhorns leading receiver and is expected to remain a starter, he’s currently sidelined due to a shoulder injury. If he were to miss time at any point throughout the season, the position becomes that much more crucial.

Here’s what Pate had to say about Texas’ young pass catchers.

Throughout the scrimmage on Saturday, it will be a great opportunity for players like redshirt freshman Troy Omeire, junior Marcus Washington, and junior Al’Vonte Woodard to step up and earn meaningful playing time.

It is vital for their sake that they do preform well, because unlike Tom Herman, Steve Sarkisian likes to find a few guys and they will get majority of the reps.

If one of these three can separate themselves from the pack, and give the Longhorns viable depth at the position, it could pay dividends in a very inexperienced offense.

Hudson Card among three of Texas’ second-year players to watch for

A big part of determining Steve Sarkisian’s early success will come from the 2020 class. Here are three second-year players to look out for.

Until the 2021 class, Tom Herman did an excellent job on the recruiting trail, rebuilding what was considered a rather poor roster. He pulled off back-to-back No. 3 rated classes in 2018 and 2019, followed by the No. 8 class the next year.

A big part of determining Steve Sarkisian’s early success will come from Herman’s final full recruiting cycle in 2020. They may not have been the highest rated on the 247Sports composite but may prove to provide the most NFL talent Texas has seen in a while.

Gerry Hamilton of On3sports and Inside Texas provided a list of three second-year Longhorn players to watch going into this season. A quarterback and two of his receivers feature, an offensive specialty for Sarkisian.

Here is Hamilton’s list:

Hudson Card may seem like the obvious one, competing for the starting quarterback job with Casey Thompson. There is reason to believe the Austin native will end up winning, even though he was with the second-team offense during the Orange and White.

He is more of a stereotypical pocket passing quarterback Sarkisian loves. Being quick and accurate in the RPO game, while also having the arm strength to deliver deep balls.

The two wide receivers mentioned bring two different dynamics.

Omeire was expected to be a breakout star during his true freshman season but tore his ACL in fall practice. Now that he is fully healthy, the former four-star recruit is expected to burst onto the scene with Sarkisian. Speed may not be Omeire’s forte but he may be the best pure receiver on the team.

Quite the opposite is true for Dixon. Speed is the name of the game for the Carthage native, showing it against Colorado in the Alamo Bowl. If during fall camp, Dixon can show he is ready to play, watch out.
