Former Ohio State running back Trey Sermon fighting for Eagles roster spot

A former Ohio State football star is fighting to make an NFL roster #GoBucks

Trey Sermon arrived in Columbus as a major transfer from Oklahoma and lived up to the hype earning All-Big Ten in 2020. Sermon made Ohio State history during the 2020 Big Ten Championship Game when he ran for 331 rushing yards against the Northwestern Wildcats, which was the most by a Buckeye in a single game in program history.

Sermon also had an elite game against the Clemson Tigers in the 2021 Sugar Bowl, where he earned 193 rushing yards during the victory. Despite suffering an injury in the 2021 College Football Playoff national championship game, Sermon parlayed his two huge games into becoming a third-round draft choice in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Big things were expected from Sermon and many pundits felt he was well-positioned to be the lead back in San Francisco. He was given that opportunity during week three of his rookie season and didn’t exactly pop. Sermon ended his rookie season on injured reserve and was released heading into 2022.

Sermon was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles before the 2022 season and saw action in two games where he received just two carries. Despite once being considered a future feature back, Sermon is right on the roster bubble and needs a strong preseason for Philadelphia to make the roster.

During their most recent contest with the Cleveland Browns, Sermon fumbled early in the game, but made up for it in the third quarter with an explosive 33-yard touchdown run.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of roster decisions the Eagles make as we get closer to the many cuts coming soon.
