Four aspects Texas needs to improve on ahead of Baylor

Texas needs to step it up in these areas.

After two devastating losses in which they blew double-digit leads, Texas is coming off of a much needed bye week.

However, this bye week has a different feel to it in comparison to a normal one, not because Texas has a new coaching staff, but the fact that they have yet to prove their ability to learn from their mistakes.

After putting up a dud of a second half against Oklahoma, the Longhorns did the same exact thing against Oklahoma State the following week. After leading by double-digits in the first half, they had maybe one or two productive drives in the third quarter, but after that their offense was nonexistent and were held to just one yard of offense in the fourth quarter.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff have had ample time to figure out how to make reasonable adjustments that will help the team win the remaining games on the schedule. At this point into the season, there are unfortunately a few things will not drastically improve, but others that can.

For starters, the offensive line is the worst unit on the team, and has seemingly gotten worse. The defense is usually solid for the first half, but is unable to sustain their play going into the second half, and don’t seem to be able to counter the adjustments made by opposing teams.

The bye week gives the team a chance to solely focus on what works and what doesn’t, and if the coaching staff can actually make the adjustments to put the players in a position to not be exposed as much, they could very well defeat Baylor in Week 9.

Here are four aspects the team needs to improve upon in order to beat Baylor.

Steve Sarkisian confirms Casey Thompson will remain Texas’ starting QB

No quarterback switch for Texas heading into the bye week.

When Hudson Card struggled against Arkansas, Steve Sarkisian decided it was time to make a move at quarterback after just two games. Texas only found the end zone one time in Fayetteville with No. 1 under center with the 8/15 for 61 passing stat line being a big reason.

Five games later and Casey Thompson finds himself coming off a poor performance. Oklahoma State’s defense dominated in the second half, forcing four three and outs, a turnover on downs, and an interception to complete their comeback. Thompson’s second-quarter pick-six hurt as well, swinging the momentum of the entire game.

Sarkisian will not be making a similar move going into the bye week, saying Thompson will remain the starter during his press conference on Monday. According to the head coach, Thompson has “earned that opportunity to work his way out of this.”

“I think Casey has earned a little bit more of that right to work through some of those struggles,” Sarkisian said. “The week before he throws five touchdowns against Oklahoma, he had a six-touchdown game against Texas Tech, so he’s played and shown really good football to us.”

Thompson has been putting up solid numbers during his five starts despite the 3-2 record. 65% of his throws are going for completions, while his 6.3 yards per attempt is top of the Big 12.

But losing can rile parts of the fan base up. Especially back-to-back games when significant leads were blown due to offensive inefficiency. Sarkisian countered by saying quarterbacks can catch the shorter end of the stick when results are not favorable.

“When you win, sometimes you get a little bit more credit than maybe you deserve and when you lose, maybe you get a little bit more of the blame than maybe you deserve.”

Something that could force Sarkisian’s hand could be an injury to Thompson’s thumb. Being on his throwing hand, the quarterback looked to be in serious discomfort at times. The training staff was tending to it all afternoon.

Making sure Card is ready for the moment if called upon is something Sarkisian says is still happening. Of course, there is nothing the head coach is known for more than developing quarterbacks.

“Now, we’re still developing Hudson and if that time comes, where we need to make a change, we’ll be prepared to do so.”

However, before finishing up his full thought, he made sure it was known Thompson is still the guy and thinks he will rebound.

“We have all the confidence in the world in Casey to do that,” Sarkisian said.

Texas has a bye week before heading to Waco to face off against a what should be ranked Baylor team. Barring injury, there will be no switch at quarterback within the next two weeks.

Sarkisian made the decision to switch to Thompson after Arkansas and will stick to his guns.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas coach Shaka Smart said Monday he had “significant” symptoms while in extended isolation from his team and family after testing positive for COVID-19 as he and the No. 6 Longhorns prepare for a showdown with No. 2 Baylor.

“This was not a walk in the park for me, not saying it has been for anyone else,” Smart said ahead of Tuesday night’s matchup of the top two teams in the Big 12. “When you go through that kind of stuff, it certainly swirls some things around your mind.”

Smart returned to the team Sunday and will be on the bench against Baylor. He didn’t detail the extent of the symptoms he experienced, but appeared frustrated that Texas played last week’s home loss to No. 9 Oklahoma when the Longhorns were missing their head coach, two starters and a key reserve because of COVID-19 protocols.

Smart said his team had several positive tests a week earlier and noted other programs have shut down for several days for less. Smart said that just before he tested positive, he ran a workout with only two players.

“If you talk to the majority of our guys, they want to play, That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been moments where some of them, they’ve been like, ‘Wow, this is really really strange,’ and thinking through what should we be doing?” Smart said.

“Everyone has their own rules about how these sorts of things are handled,” Smart said. “I did not say we didn’t want to play. I wasn’t there. I think you can tell that was a very, very difficult day for me.”

After losing to Oklahoma, Texas’ next game at Kentucky was canceled because of a positive COVID-19 test within the Wildcats program.

Even with its coach and so many players sitting out, Texas never put its program on pause. Texas had eight scholarship players available for the Oklahoma game, which exceeded the Big 12’s minimum of six.

“We knew it was going to be difficult to meander through,” Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said. “But we met the threshold and we continue to play.”

The matchup with Baylor will be the first of the season between the Bears (16-0, 8-0) and Longhorns (11-3, 5-2), after their first scheduled game in December was postponed because of COVID-19 issues at Baylor. The game has not yet been rescheduled.

Baylor coach Scott Drew tested positive just before Thanksgiving.

Texas has not allowed fans at the Erwin Center for about a month, but will allow a limited number Tuesday night as infection and hospitalization rates in the Austin area have improved.

Smart said the Longhorns should be at full strength. Baylor guard Davion Mitchell predicted Texas will have to adjust after having so many players, and Smart, forced to sit out.

“I think it’s going to be a little bit difficult for them, just because of some of the people coming back from COVID,” Mitchell said. “They’ve got to get that team chemistry back. But, it’s going to be a good game.”

Texas Longhorns Basketball: BetMGM odds, how to watch the Baylor game

Texas will return to action on Tuesday night against No. 2 Baylor. The two will be playing each other for the first time this season.

Texas will return to action on Tuesday night against Baylor, the undefeated No. 2 team in the country. The two will be playing against each other for the first time this season after the matchup in January was postponed due to COVID-19 problems.

The Bears are one of the deepest teams in the country with four players who average double figures. Jared Butler and MaCio Teague are the real stars, averaging a combined 31.7 points per game. Baylor ranks as the top Big 12 team in scoring, field goal percentage, three-point percentage, assists, steals, opponent’s field goal percentage, and opponents scoring. They can do nearly everything.

Shaka Smart confirmed the Longhorns should have everyone back who was out from COVID-19, including himself. Knocking off the Bears at home would not only get them back on the right track but bolster Texas’ NCAA Tournament seeding come March.

Three takeaways from Texas’ win against Baylor

After two consecutive defeats to TCU and Oklahoma, Texas finally got back to winning against Baylor. Here are three takeaways from the win.

After two consecutive defeats to TCU at home and Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout, Texas finally got back to their winning ways against Baylor.

Head coach Tom Herman said he was “extremely proud of the response to those challenges by not only myself and our coaches, but the leaders on the team stepping up and challenging their teammates.” With a bye mixed in, it had been a difficult three weeks for the Longhorns program.

It may not have been the most inspiring win but on paper, the Longhorns are now 2-2 in Big 12 play and still have a shot to make an appearance in the Big 12 Championship. The win over the Bears did not fix every on the field issue but was the correct step.

Here is three takeaway’s from Texas’ Saturday afternoon victory over Baylor:

The Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman spoke with the media following the 27-16 victory over the Baylor Bears. Herman spoke immediately about playing cleaner football with just five penalties. He did speak about the lone injury coming from Joseph Ossai. He suffered a shoulder injury in the first half and put a brace on to get back into the game late.

Herman mentioned that Roschon Johnson gave a great speech as they left the locker room to kick off the third quarter. The team did a good job on defense of limiting what the Baylor offense could do, but the offense responded with 27 straight points to secure the win for Texas.

Herman went on to mention that the Longhorns made an emphasis during the bye week of getting back to running the football. The team responded as whole on both sides of the ball when it came to running the football and stopping the run.
