Maybe Texas and Chris Del Conte should think outside the box

When it comes to making a decision about the future of the Texas Longhorns football team, Chris Del Conte should think outside the box.

Jay Janner-USA TODAY NETWORK

On the topic of the head coaching position at the University of Texas, we have spent time discussing the idea of Urban Meyer. That one didn’t pan out as he chose to not return to coaching.

Then there was an idea about Dan Mullens possibly leaving Florida for Texas. Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman shot that down after speaking with high-ranking officials for the Gators.

There were some advocating for Iowa State’s Matt Campbell. We even looked into five reasons why they should, before Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports shot that down as well. So where does Chris Del Conte turn? Are we going to see Tom Herman return to Austin by default?

Given the fact that on Wednesday, Dec. 16, the 2021 recruiting class can begin signing their national letters of intent, nothing is likely to happen before then. That shouldn’t be taken as the administration is expecting to bring Herman back. They haven’t decided one way or the other on Herman’s future with Texas.

Removing a head coach just a week for signing day with no replacement in the fold is recruiting suicide and would be classified as college football malpractice. Texas athletic director Del Conte does need to exhaust every effort to ensure they have the right coach in place for the 2021 season.

There is a name that won’t excite a lot of fans but one that should be investigated a bit.

So who is the coach?

Texas head coach Tom Herman named to midseason Dodd Trophy watch list

After recently being named to the Paul “Bear” Bryant coach of the year award, Texas’ Tom Herman finds himself another watch list.

The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl has released their midseason watch list for the top head coaches in college football. Before the season the Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman was among the coaches listed on the initial preseason list. He was also present on the midseason watch list.

The Dodd Trophy, college football’s most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity– the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s coaching philosophy.

Herman was one of 19 coaches to make the midseason list. The Longhorns have at least three games left this year and it could be as many as five. That would include their bowl game and a potential Big 12 Championship.

Big 12 Coaches listed

Coach School Record AP Ranking
Tom Herman Texas 5-2 22
Matt Campbell Iowa State 5-2 17
Mike Gundy Oklahoma State 5-1 14
Lincoln Riley Oklahoma 5-2 18

It should come as no surprise to see the four coaches vying for a shot at the Big 12 Championship all be on the list.

“The Dodd Trophy is unique from other coach of the year awards considering it looks beyond just wins and losses on the football field,” said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO & president. “Each of these coaches have had successful seasons to date, but what sets them apart is how they’ve empowered their players in the classroom and impacted their communities in a positive way. All of these coaches on the watch list are strong contenders for this year’s Dodd Trophy and we look forward to seeing who emerges as finalists this last month of the season.”

The Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman spoke with the media following the 27-16 victory over the Baylor Bears. Herman spoke immediately about playing cleaner football with just five penalties. He did speak about the lone injury coming from Joseph Ossai. He suffered a shoulder injury in the first half and put a brace on to get back into the game late.

Herman mentioned that Roschon Johnson gave a great speech as they left the locker room to kick off the third quarter. The team did a good job on defense of limiting what the Baylor offense could do, but the offense responded with 27 straight points to secure the win for Texas.

Herman went on to mention that the Longhorns made an emphasis during the bye week of getting back to running the football. The team responded as whole on both sides of the ball when it came to running the football and stopping the run.
