Texas Longhorns vs Kansas State: Bijan Robinson continues to sizzle

In the third quarter, the Longhorns extended their lead on the legs of Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. 66-31.

After heading into halftime up 31-17, it didn’t take long for Texas to score once again. On the second play from scrimmage, Bijan Robinson took the ball 75-yards to the house. He showed great balance by staying up and showed the burst down the sideline to extend the lead to 38-17.

For the second time this year, Juwan Mitchell was ejected from the game for a targeting call. Jaylin Ford would come into the game to take the spot vacated by Mitchell. The Wildcats answered immediately with a touchdown of their own. Chris Brown whiffed on a tackle attempt that allowed Malik Knowles to score.

On the ensuing kickoff, D’Shawn Jamison decided to take it into his own hands. He would return the kick 98 yards. It appeared that Jamison scored but after the review, they put the ball at the one-yard line. Roschon Johnson punched it in on the next play.

The Wildcats answered right back with a 29-yard catch and run from Knowles. The back and forth third quarter continued with trading two scores apiece. The Longhorns would answer again using the ground game.

After another long run by Bijan mixed in with a catch and run, the Longhorns would use a little trickeration to score. Roschon would toss the ball to Jordan Whittington on the reverse to punch another score to go up 52-31 with 7:01 left in the quarter.

After forcing the Wildcats, the Longhorns would take over trying to eat the clock with the running game. Sam Ehlinger would find Jake Smith on a 33-yard catch and run to get a first down on third and four. On the next play Ehlinger would find Cade Brewer for a touchdown catch and run where he tightropes the sideline.

Following the David Gbenda interception of Will Howard, Ehlinger finds Malcolm Epps for yet another score. Longhorns end the third quarter up 66-31.

Texas Longhorns vs Kansas State Wildcats: First quarter recap

Texas’ day has started well, leading Kansas State 17-7. Both the offense and defense have been dominant, doing whatever they want.

Texas’ day could not have gotten off to a better start, leading Kansas State 17-7 at the end of the first quarter. Both the offense and defense have been dominant, doing whatever they want.

Starting with quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who is seven of nine with 87 yards. He has connected with four different receivers, with redshirt freshman Jordan Whittington leading the way.

On the ground, both Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson have found the endzone. It was the first touchdown of Robinson’s young career in his ninth game. Johnson notched his fourth total score of the year.

A huge question coming in was Texas’ offensive line and how they would hold up. With Samuel Cosmi opting out of the season in preparation for the NFL Draft, the blockers needed a shakeup. Derek Kerstetter has slid back to right tackle while true freshman Jake Majors is at center.

So far, no problems for Sam Ehlinger when dropping back to pass. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich has done an excellent job moving the offensive line around to make sure Kansas State’s pass rush is not effective.

Defensively, the Wildcats have moved the ball, especially on the ground. Quarterback Will Howard leads the way with 40 yards on four carries. However, the electric shake and bake power of running back Duece Vaughn broke Texas’ defense late in the quarter.

Jerrin Thompson, another true freshman, came up big with his first career interception. With Caden Sterns also opting out for the NFL Draft, Thompson was dubbed as his replacement. He did walk off the field slowly after Kansas State’s touchdown but has made a huge impact early.

First-quarter stats

Sam Ehlinger: Eight of 10 for 98 yards

Roschon Johnson: Five carries for 40 yards and one touchdown

Jordan Whittington: Two receptions for 35 yards

Duece Vaughn: One carry for 19 yards and a touchdown

Texas vs. Kansas State: Staff game picks, BetMGM odds plus confidence levels

On Saturday the Texas Longhorns look for their fourth win over Kansas State in as many tries under Tom Herman. Staff picks and odds.

Texas needs a win on Saturday for a multitude of reasons, none of which involve the Big 12 title race.

For one, the Longhorns could use a win to quiet the noise surrounding their program and head coach Tom Herman. After losing yet another player to an opt out, the optics are not looking too bright at the moment. Their bowl seeding for the upcoming postseason is another benefit to a win this week.

Texas Longhorns Confidence Level

With the game fast approaching, we wanted to measure the confidence level of each staff member. How strongly do they feel that the Longhorns can pull out the victory?

Patrick Conn

My confidence in this team is dropping by the minute. Heading into this matchup, they lost three players to opt outs with Samuel Cosmi, Caden Sterns and Keaontay Ingram. Each of these players had a rather large role with this team. With all of the outside distractions, can this team focus on a Kansas State team? I am not so sure.

Confidence level: 3.5

Cami Griffin

They’re deflated. That’s the best way that I can describe the Texas football program after a heartbreaking loss to Iowa State last week. It’s hard enough to rebound after a loss like that in itself, but losing three key players further decreases their odds. Although there’s numerous distractions right now, there’s still several key seniors that want to finish this season on a high note. That’s what quarterback Sam Ehlinger deserves. However, I don’t have enough confidence in this coaching staff — therefore the game can go either way.

Confidence level: 5

Griffin McVeigh

Given the circumstances around the program right now, there is no way anybody can be super confident. Losing three players who were considered stars at the beginning of the season next helps. It almost feels as if Tom Herman has lost his players and everyone knows the writing on the wall. While Kansas State is not playing well either, this has a Wildcat victory written all over it.

Confidence level: 4

Game picks are up next

Joseph Ossai leads defensive keys for Longhorns against Kansas State

These three defensive players will be paramount for the Texas Longhorns to leave Manhattan with a victory on Saturday.

After opening Big 12 Conference play with a 4-0 record, the Kansas State Wildcats have now lost four in a row. In their season finale on senior day they look to get back on the winning side and end the year on a high note. The Texas Longhorns defense under Chris Ash looks to continue their upward trajectory.

Against Iowa State, the defense was able to limit the big plays from Breece Hall and the offense for most of the game. When they needed to make a play the offense was able to drive the field after the offense failed to keep the ball from the Cyclones. Another effort from the defense like that and the Longhorns should be in a much better position with Kansas State.

The Wildcats offense does have a few players to key on, led by freshman running back Deuce Vaughn. Can the Longhorns defense force fellow freshman quarterback Will Howard into a few mistakes in the game?

Brennan Eagles leads group of offensive trio that are key for the Longhorns

These three offensive players will be paramount for the Texas Longhorns to leave Manhattan with a victory on Saturday.

On Saturday the Texas Longhorns look to get right back into the saddle. After falling to Iowa State last Friday, they need to finish out the year strong. The team started out 2-2 after four games but has an opportunity to close it out winning five of the final six regular season games.

As Tom Herman would say, “we need to go 1-0 on Saturday.” That starts with beating the Kansas State Wildcats in Manhattan at 11:00 am CST. To do so, the offense will need to take advantage of a defense that is susceptible to big plays. They rank dead last in the conference with 51 explosive plays given up. They do expect to have their starting linebackers back for this game. However, Texas has shown the ability to take advantage.
