Texas commit Maalik Murphy selected as a 2022 Polynesian Bowl All-Star

Five-star quarterback and Texas commit Maalik Murphy has been selected as a 2022 Polynesian Bowl All-Star.

By this time next year, the No. 2 ranked quarterback in the nation is going to be a part of the Texas Longhorns football program. First, he plans to make some noise in Honolulu, HI.

Five-star quarterback and Texas commit Maalik Murphy has been invited to the inaugural Polynesian Bowl in 2022. The official Twitter account of the Polynesian Bowl announced the news on Tuesday.

The 2021 Polynesian Bowl was not played as a result of the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This year, the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame has decided to bring it back with the hopes that the game can continue.

The most recent Longhorns to participate in the game were running back Bijan Robinson and linebacker Prince Dorbah, both of whom played for Texas as true freshmen last season.

As of right now, Murphy is the only Texas commit to be a part of the game, but that could change as more 2022 recruiting targets begin to announce their playing commitments in the coming months.

Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns offer current Kansas commit Garfield Lawrence

Texas recently offered three-star defensive end Garfield Lawrence, who originally committed to Kansas on Nov. 30.

Texas has recently sent an offer to Garfield Lawrence, a 2021 defensive end out of Tyler, Texas. The three-star prospect committed to Kansas on Nov. 30 but decided not to sign during early signing day. The Longhorns will be pushing hard to flip Lawrence before the Feb. 3 signing date.

Lawrence had an impressive senior season for Tyler Legacy High School and has garnered more attention because of it. He finished with 48 tackles, 12.0 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Flipping the defensive end would not be the first 2021 prospect Texas has taken from a Big 12 opponent. Three-star quarterback Charles Wright was once committed to Iowa State and three-star defensive tackle Byron Murphy flipped from Baylor.

New defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and reported defensive line coach Bo Davis have just under a month to change Lawrence’s mind.

Texas Football Recruiting: Five recruits Steve Sarkisian must land

Without stepping a foot on campus, the intrigue of coming to play for UT has been reignited. Here are five recruits Sarkisian must land:

[jwplayer 2tmwT897-er0jUifI]

Tom Herman’s recruiting success came to a screeching halt during the 2021 cycle. And once Quinn Ewers decommited, the 2022 class was going to take a wrong turn as well. Despite finishing with three top 10 classes in three years, recruiting at an elite level was nearly dead in Austin.

Insert Steve Sarkisian, one of the top offensive recruiters during his time at Alabama. Without stepping a foot on campus just yet, the intrigue of coming to play for the University of Texas has seemingly been reignited. His reported staff is filled with top-notch recruiters on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

“We cannot let the top talent in the state of Texas leave the state of Texas,” said Sarkisian at his introductory Zoom press conference. It was something Herman was letting the Crimson Tide, Ohio State, and Oklahoma do on a yearly basis. Getting off to a fast start after the national championship is going to be crucial.

Here are five recruits Steve Sarkisian must land in the 2021 and 2022 class:

Quinn Ewers comments on Ohio State, relationship with Steve Sarkisian

Five-star QB Quinn Ewers is one of the highest-rated recruits ever. He commented on Ohio State and Steve Sarkisian after his playoff win.

Five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers is in the middle of the 6A-D1 playoffs with Southlake Carroll. The Dragons had a quarterfinal matchup against Euless Trinity, in which Ewers completed 90.1% of his throws for 450 yards and six touchdowns.

After the game, Ewers caught up with Mike Craven of the Austin American-Statesman. He said he heard about the Herman news before the game but was still going to stay strong with his Ohio State commitment.

“I’m rocking with my guys at Ohio State. Obviously, success comes into account and they’ve had a lot of success. I want to be a part of something like that.”

Ewers has been consistent throughout his recruitment when talking about a winning culture. As things stand, Ohio State is off to play in the 2021 College Football Playoff championship against Alabama and Steve Sarkisian. Texas is coming off a 7-3 season, far from a conference championship, let alone a national title.

However, with Sarkisian taking over in Austin, there is hope that could change. Ewers says he has had conversations with the new Texas head coach but does not seem too serious.

“I’ve visited with Sark a few times just to chop it up,” Ewers said. “He’s a cool guy.”

If the Longhorns ever wanted to have another shot at Ewers firing Herman had to be Step 1. Sarkisian will have the opportunity to reset the relationship the No. 1 recruit in the country has with the Texas program.

Step 2 will be having a huge 2021 season. Ewers has made it clear he wants to be a part of a winning culture. While Sarkisian will bring that over from his time at Alabama, results on the field are the only thing that will show Texas has changed.

December 2021 is the earliest Ewers can sign his national letter of intent to Ohio State. Sarkisian has just about less than a year to get the Longhorns the generational quarterback they have been in desperate need of since Colt McCoy in 2009.

Texas Football Recruiting: Five-star in-state offensive tackle releases top 10

Five-star prospect Kam Dewberry has released his top 10 schools. The offensive tackle comes out of the same high school as Samuel Cosmi.

Five-star prospect Kam Dewberry has released his top 10 schools, with Texas making the cut. The offensive tackle comes out of the same high school as future first-round draft pick Samuel Cosmi.

Baylor and Oklahoma are the Longhorns’ competitors within the conference. Six SEC programs are in Dewberry’s top 10, with big-name programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and LSU in the cut. As usual, rival Texas A&M is hot on the trail for an elite in-state prospect.

Dewberry is an important prospect for Texas, considering how poorly the offensive line class was in 2021. Ranked the No. 2 in-state tackle, Herb Hand and the Longhorns need to be able to make a splash.

Texas Football Recruiting: Five-star Denton Ryan DT announces top 16

In the 2022 class, Denton Ryan has another star at the DT position in Bear Alexander. Texas has made the top 16 for the five-star.

Denton Ryan High School is producing some of the best in-state talents over the past two recruiting cycles. Five-star athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders signed with the Longhorns on Wednesday and four-star athlete Billy Bowman, a former UT commit, signed with Oklahoma.

Moving into the 2022 class, the Raiders have another star at the defensive tackle position in Bear Alexander. Rivals.com has him as a five-star prospect and the No. 3 player in the state of Texas.

Within his top 16, Oklahoma and TCU are the only other Big 12 schools to make the cut. SEC teams dominate with top programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and LSU within the mix. In-state rival Texas A&M, who is seen as one of the favorites in his recruitment, also makes the top 16.
