Three star defensive tackle Sawyer Goram-Welch commits to Texas

Texas has landed another defensive tackle commit in the 2020 class with Sawyer Goram-Welch. He is a three star prospect out of Longview, TX.

Texas has landed three-star defensive tackle Sawyer Goram-Welch out of Longview, Texas. It was a quick change of events for Goram-Welch, who flipped from Oklahoma State two months after announcing he would be committing.

When Goram-Welch decommitted from the Cowboys on Dec. 7, the Longhorns had already offered him a scholarship five days earlier. Making his official visit to Texas this weekend, Goram-Welch made the decision to join the No. 7 ranked 2020 recruiting class on Sunday night.

 

Goram-Welch is listed at 6 feet 4 inches and 278 pounds. Coming out of Longview High School, he had 64 tackles in his senior season. 15 of them were for losses, including eight sacks. While he did not force any turnovers this year, he forced three fumbles in his junior season in 2018.

Joining Vernon Broughton as the other defensive tackle in the 2020 class, the Longhorns are now up to six defensive commits. Gorman-Welch plans on signing with Texas during the early signing period, enrolling in the University in the spring.

Early period signing day is on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Texas currently is the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the 2020 class, with Oklahoma being the closest to the Longhorns at No. 10.

Firing Tim Beck, Texas is looking for a new offensive coordinator for the first time in three years. Here are names to keep an eye out for.

For the Longhorns in 2019, the offense was one of the strong suits. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger was fantastic, wide receiver Devin Duvernay was one of the best in the country at his position, and even running back Roschon Johnson – who was originally a quarterback – did a fantastic job for Texas this season. However, as the season went on, something was still missing. Especially in the final few games, the Longhorn offense did not feel like themselves.

Once the game against Texas Tech was done, Tom Herman decided that it was time to make some changes. The Longhorns got rid of Tim Beck as the offensive coordinator, moving him to quarterbacks coach. While Tom Herman has been heavily involved in the offense, it may be time for someone new to take over the reins.

When Herman was hired from Houston in 2017, Beck made the transition over with him. Now, making his first coordinator hire as head coach at Texas, Herman has to get it right. What Texas needs is an outside hire that has had success as an offensive coordinator at another big name school. Here are three names to keep an eye out for the offensive coordinator job.

After an interception that went for a touchdown earlier in the game, former Texas cornerback Quandre Diggs picked off Rams quarterback Jared Goff for the second time in as many drives.

This one was different than the first one, as it was downfield. Goff threw it deep to wide receiver Brandon Cooks on 3rd and 5 but overthrew him by a few yards. Diggs was five yards behind the receiver, being in the perfect position to intercept the pass.

This is Diggs’ third interception of the year, all being with the Seahawks. He continues to make big plays for Seattle, keeping them in games.

WATCH: Former Longhorn Quandre Diggs gets a pick six

Former Longhorn Quandre Diggs is making another play, this time a pick-six. This is Diggs’ second INT since being traded from Detroit.

Another week, another highlight play for Quandre Diggs. The Seattle Seahawks are in primetime again this weekend, this time playing the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. For most of the night, Rams’ quarterback Jared Goff has been having success against the Seahawk defense.

That changed when Diggs intercepted Goff in their first possession of the first half. Thrown across the middle, Diggs came out of nowhere, intercepted the ball, and ran 55 yards to the endzone untouched.

This is Diggs’ second interception for Seattle since being traded from Detroit. He has made an instant impact for the Seahawks, being a huge addition to the Seattle defense.

College Football Playoff: Who is In?

After a long college football season, the College Football Playoff is finally here. Who got into the playoff on the sixth Selection Sunday?

The college football regular season is over and the moment everyone has been waiting for is finally here. Usually, Selection Sunday is full of drama and debate. This year, the four teams were known and the only thing to debate was in which order to put them in.

Clemson (13-0), LSU (13-0), Ohio State (13-0), and Oklahoma (12-1) were the only Power 5 teams to either be undefeated or have one loss. All four were conference champions, with all but Oklahoma having convincing victories on Saturday.

Oklahoma came in at No. 4, beating Baylor in overtime in the Big 12 Championship, 30-23. At No. 3, Clemson has won eight straight games by 30+ points, including a 62-17 win against Virginia in the ACC Championship.

The debate of the day was who the committee was going to put at No. 1. The ranking is significant as facing Oklahoma is seen as an easier task than Clemson in the semi-final matchup. Ohio State was put at No. 2, as they needed a comeback win against Wisconsin to win the Big 10 Championship, 34-21. LSU comes in at No. 1, destroying Georgia 37-10 in the SEC Championship.

Texas joins Texas A&M as the only other team in the country to play two playoff teams this season. Texas faced LSU and Oklahoma, while Texas A&M faced Clemson and LSU.

No. 1 LSU will face No. 4 Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl, while No. 2 Ohio State will face No. 3 Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl. Both games will take place on Saturday, Dec. 28 on ESPN.

Former Longhorn Quandre Diggs delivered a huge hit to Irv Smith last night. The hit was so big, you could hear the two players colliding.

The Seattle Seahawks played host to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football last night. In the middle of the second quarter, the two teams were tied at seven. Quarterback Kirk Cousins found former Alabama tight end on an out route near the line of scrimmage. Former Texas cornerback Quandre Diggs quickly sniffed it out and delivered a monster hit.

Smith only gained three yards on the play. Once Diggs hit him, he immediately went down. The hit was so big, you could hear the two players colliding.

Diggs is having a great season for Seattle after being traded from Detroit. In the three games, he has forced two turnovers, an interception and a fumble. His interception came in a win against the San Fransico 49ers. Against the Philadelphia Eagles, he forced and recovered a fumble.

Diggs and the Seahawks beat Minnesota last night, moving into first place in the NFC West. Their final four games will come against the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and San Fransico 49ers.

Texas wins second Big 12 title 14 years ago today

On Dec. 3, 2005, Texas faced off against Colorado in the Big 12 championship game. They blew them out, 70-3, the largest win in history.

On Dec. 3, 2005, Texas faced off against Colorado in the Big 12 championship game. The two teams had already met earlier that season in Austin, with the Longhorns winning 42-17. With a national championship birth on the line, Texas blew out the Buffaloes, 70-3.

For the Longhorns, they pounded the ball on the ground, having 57 attempts for 268 yards. Six out of the nine touchdowns for Texas came on the ground. No one player, in particular, had a ridiculous amount of yards, as Jamaal Charles led the way with 62 yards. Romance Taylor, Henry Melton, Vince Young, and Selvin Young all had over 30 yards. Charles and Melton both had two touchdowns, while Vince and Selvin Young each had one.

In the air that day, Vince Young had his second-most efficient day of the year. In the regular-season matchup against Colorado, he completed 86% of this throws. In the Big 12 championship, he completed 82%, going 14-17. He added 193 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

Colorado struggled all day, only having 191 total yards. The Buffaloes fumbled four different times, losing it three times. Quarterback Joel Klatt had an interception, making it four turnovers for Colorado. When they were not turning it over, they were punting. The Longhorn defense forced seven punts, not letting the Buffaloes get any offensive rhythm.

The 70-3 win is still the biggest win in the history of the Big 12 championship. Vince Young was named MVP of the game, having 250 total yards and four touchdowns. Texas improved to 13-0, setting themselves up for a matchup in the BCS Championship game against USC.

WATCH: Former Longhorn Mack Brown celebrates after gaining bowl eligibly

UNC defeated arch-rival NC St. gaining bowl eligibility in Mack Brown’s first season. He celebrated with the team in the locker room.

When Texas fired Mack Brown in 2013, he was just four years removed from winning the Big 12 and making a national championship appearance. In those four years, he never got back to double-digit wins, with his best record being 9-4. After being fired, Brown took some time to work in the media, working with ESPN as a studio analyst.

Five years after being let go from Texas, Brown was hired by the school where he started his Power 5 head coaching career, North Carolina. He inherited a mess, with the program losing nine games two years in a row. Brown had three 10 win seasons while at UNC, but they had only had one since he left in 1998.

The Tarheels defeated in-state arch-rival North Carolina State 41-10 on Saturday, gaining bowl eligibility in Brown’s first season as the head coach. He rightfully celebrated with the team in the locker room after the game.

With North Carolina being bowl eligible, people have started to wonder if they could match up with Texas in the Camping World Bowl. Even Camping World’s CEO Marcus Lemonis said it would be a good game.

If the Tar Heels and Longhorns were to meet in the Camping World Bowl, not only would there be a reunion with Mack Brown, but it would be the first time the schools have met since 2002. Brown has turned the UNC football program around and has a chance to become a consistently good team in the ACC.

2020 4* Defensive End decommits from Texas

2020 4* defensive end Van Fillinger has decommited from Texas. Fillinger is a 6’3, 205-pound strong-side defensive end from Draper, Utah.

2020 4* defensive end Van Fillinger has decommited from Texas, reopening his recruitment. According to 247 sports, Fillinger is a 6’3, 205-pound strong-side defensive end from Draper, Utah. He is the 13th ranked SDE in the country and the second overall player in the state of Utah.

Having 17 other offers, Kansas State was the only other Big 12 school to offer Fillinger. Most of his offers have come from the west coast, with Pac 12 schools like Oregon, USC, Utah, UCLA, and Washington interested. Crystal Ball now gives Utah a 62% chance to sign Fillinger.

The Longhorns now only have one other 2020 commit from the defensive line. Vernon Boughton is a 4* defensive tackle from Houston, TX, but Texas now does not have a defensive end commit in this upcoming recruiting cycle.
