Team preview: Minnesota Golden Gophers

Wisconsin football will take the field against head coach P.J. Fleck and the Minnesota Gophers this weekend with Paul Bunyan’s Axe at stake.

The 2-3 Wisconsin Badgers were given a gift by the Big Ten Conference on Sunday as they received a shot at renewing their long-standing rivalry with 3-3 Minnesota after the game between the two schools during the regular season was canceled due to COVID-19.

A win could be a breath of fresh air for the struggling Badgers, as no matter how rough a season is trending, a win against Minnesota always seems to help turn the season’s struggles around.

A loss on Saturday, however, would make an extremely tough season even worse for a team that has seen three games canceled due to COVID-19 and is riding a three-game losing streak heading into the contest.

The state of Wisconsin saw Minnesota break out last season, finishing with an 11-2 record and a co-Big Ten West crown (which the Badgers obviously won thanks to their win against the Gophers). Everybody also saw the Gophers create championship rings for their season, which included “winning” the Big Ten West even though they finished second.

That is all in the past, however, and the battle for Paun Bunyan’s Axe will be renewed just two days from now.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Today, we will be looking at freshman quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson.

Class: Freshman

Hometown: Dallas, Texas

High School: Duncanville

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 46 overall / No. 3 position / No. 7 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 180 overall / No. 5 position / No. 26 in-state

Analysis: Ja’Quinden Jackson comes out of Duncanville High School, one of the best football programs in the country. The No. 3 overall dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 class, Jackson will have his chance at the starting quarterback job next season.

For now, Jackson is still dealing with a partially torn ACL he suffered in December. The freshman recovered throughout the summer and prolonged break and has been back out on the practice field. For now, he stands as the team’s fourth-string quarterback.

A threat in the passing game and the running game, Jackson ran for 1,030 yards and 16 touchdowns his senior year. He took Duncanville all the way to the state semi-final game before suffering his injury. Once he is back to 100% healthy, it will be hard to count him out in next season’s quarterback competition.

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt will be a part of a commencement sendoff Houston celebrities are organizing for the 2020 graduating class.

The 2020 class didn’t have a final year like the rest of society; it was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Deepi Sidhu of HoustonTexans.com, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is joining other Houston celebrities, including Houston Rockets guard James Harden and the Houston Astros’ Carlos Correa, to give the 2020 graduating class a proper sendoff.

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner says he is proud of the 2020 graduating class and is appreciative of the honor they will receive on June 5 at 6:30 p.m. in a video tribute.

“The 2020 high school senior class has achieved a major milestone during what is certainly one of the nation’s most challenging times in recent history,” Turner said in a statement. “They have sacrificed and endured, and I am so proud of every one of them. That is why I have asked the city of Houston, along with some extraordinary personalities to come together to honor and encourage these amazing students with a unique and special celebration.”

Watt is a pro at commencement speeches. In 2019, the former 2011 first-round pick gave the commencement address at the University of Wisconsin.

Wide receiver Haakon Anderson of Verona, Wis. announced his commitment to the University of Wisconsin earlier today per his Twitter page.

The Verona Area High School product was a two-time All-Region and three-time All-Conference player and had interest from schools including Duke, North Dakota State, North Dakota, Drake and Eastern Kentucky.

Anderson joins a stellar class of recruits brought in this year by Head Coach Paul Chryst, a class headlined by names including tackle Jack Nelson, linebacker Nick Herbig and wide receiver Chimere Dike

Chryst’s 2020 recruiting class is currently ranked 25th in the nation and fifth in the Big Ten by 24/7 Sports.

Texas RB Bijan Robinson among top 10 playmakers in the 2020 class

Texas signee Bijan Robinson was named one of the top 10 playmakers out of the 2020 class, according to 247Sports.

Whenever there’s a list regarding the top prospects in the 2020 recruiting class, running back Bijan Robinson deserves to be on it.

The most recent recruiting cycle is loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball. According to 247Sports, Texas signee Bijan Robinson is among the top ten playmakers in the nation.

The ten players range in positions from running back, quarterback, wide receiver, and tight end. A playmaker could have many meanings, perhaps it’s one who controls the flow of the teams offense. It could be a player who seems to provide highlight reels constantly. Unbelievable plays. Acrobatic catches. Unstoppable.

However you choose to define a playmaker, Robinson is just that. The Texas signee was the No. 1 running back in the nation by the end of his recruiting cycle. He’s the type of player that can do it all.

Robinson became the first running back in Arizona history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in three different seasons. The Salpointe Cathloic product finished his high school career with 7,036 yards and 112 total touchdowns.

The 6-0, 200-pound back participated in the All-American Bowl and the Polynesian Bowl over the past few months, solidifying his ranking. He has terrific vision and is a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

This type of talent doesn’t come around often. Robinson is expected to make an immediate impact at Texas as a true freshman.

Texas Longhorns land five-star defensive end, No. 32 overall prospect

Five-star defensive end Alfred Collins has officially committed to the University of Texas.

Texas just significantly strengthened their defensive line.

It came down to the wire, but five-star defensive end Alfred Collins has officially confirmed his decision to sign a National Letter of Intent to continue his playing career as a student-athlete at the University of Texas.

The Longhorns were still in competition with Oklahoma and Alabama on Wednesday, where all three programs awaited official word from the No. 2 strong-side defensive end in the nation.

Undoubtedly Texas’ highest-rated target remaining in the 2020 recruiting class, Collins is the No. 32 overall rated player according to 247Sports. As a senior at Cedar Creek High School in 2019, Collins earned his second consecutive District 13-5A-II Defensive Lineman of the Year award.

The 6-5, 284-pound lineman is now the second-highest graded recruit in the Longhorns 2020 recruiting class, trailing only running back Bijan Robinson.

Collins becomes the first five-star defensive line prospect to sign in the Big 12 since Malcolm Brown in 2012. He’s a difference-making talent at a position where it’s hard to find them.

A Big National Signing Day Could Put Texas Back In Top 10

With a big National Signing Day coming up on February 5th, the Texas Longhorns could jump back into the Top 10 with the 2020 class.

Prior to the updated National Rankings from 247 Sports, the Texas Longhorns were rated as the number one recruiting class in the Big 12 and top 10 in the Nation. Currently the sit 11th nationally and second in the Big 12 conference behind rival Oklahoma.

The team just ahead of them in the rankings, Michigan, is just 0.11 points ahead of them based on the recruiting rankings provided by 247. Signing Alfred Collins, Princely Umanmielen and Ennis Rakestraw Jr would definitely get them into the top 10 and likely overtake the Sooners for best in the Big 12.

Collins would give the Longhorns their second five-star recruit to go along with Bijan Robinson and Princely would be the classes 12th four-star signing. Neither Michigan or Oklahoma have a single five-star recruit in their prospective classes.

Recruiting classes rankings don’t carry much weight into the season without coaches putting them into a position to win but it provides fans and teams bragging rights. Well at least until they take the field in the fall.

This year will likely be the lowest ranked class since Tom Herman stepped onto the Forty Acres but he hasn’t finished outside the top 10. Every class has been third in the nation until the 2020 class.

Texas target, 2020 three-star cornerback lists Top Three schools

Texas is still in the hunt to land 2020 three-star cornerback Ennis Rakestraw.

As National Signing Day approaches on February 5, Texas is in great position to land a few of their top targets to finish out the 2020 recruiting class.

Currently ranked the No. 11 overall class in the nation, the Longhorns are hoping to still land several more prospects on Wednesday to bolster their defense.

Five-star defensive end Alfred Collins is undoubtedly the highest-rated target remaining for Texas, but four-star defensive end Princely Umanmielen and three-star cornerback Ennis Rakestraw would be significant additions.

While we’ve covered the remaining schools in the hunt to land Collins and Umanmielen, it appears Rakestraw has included Texas as one of his top remaining programs also.

The Duncanville, Texas native completed visits with Texas, Alabama, and Missouri in January. Rakestraw was named the 2019 Dallas Morning News Defensive Player of the Year, helped lead Duncanville High School to 15-1 records, state-runner up finishes as a junior and senior.

Alabama has been heavily recruiting the 6-0, 170-pound defensive back, but Texas’ late push to land Rakeshaw over the past month was enough to secure his final official visit before National Signing Day.

Final 247 Rankings: Texas Have Number Two and Three Dual Threat Quarterbacks

The Texas Longhorns have signed the number two and three dual threat quarterbacks according to the 247 final rankings of 2020.

Recently 247 posted their final rankings for the 2020 recruiting class. Bijan Robinson was once ranked as the number two running back before being bumped up. Two other 2020 Texas Longhorns signees are in the top three at their position.

Hudson Card

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Former Austin Lake Travis quarterback Hudson Card finishes as the number two dual threat quarterback in the state and seventh overall. Card has drawn comparisons to former West Virginia and Florida quarterback Will Grier. Card has shown the ability to win from the pocket but don’t be fooled, Hudson can beat you with his legs and he has shown the ability to do it often.  Card was an Elite 11 finalist and was named to the Under Armour All-American game roster.

Ja’Quinden Jackson

Jackson is the second of the dual threat quarterbacks to sign with Texas as part of their 2020 recruiting class. Jackson played Duncanville in the Dallas-Ft Worth metroplex. He is the third-ranked dual threat quarterback and 10th overall in the state. Jackson was also on the roster for the Under Armour All-American game but a torn ACL ended his season in the state semifinal playoff game. Jackson has drawn comparisons to Vince Young and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

For these two quarterbacks, their battle will begin in the spring of the 2021 Texas football season. Sam Ehlinger in place to start for the 2020 season and Jackson and Card will duke it out to see who will be the heir apparent in Texas. Quite the battle is ahead for the two of the top three dual quarterbacks in the state of Texas.
