Can star RB Derrick Henry be the missing piece to the Ravens’ Super Bowl puzzle?

The Baltimore Ravens already ranked No. 1 in the NFL in rush yards per game last season, so is Derrick Henry really the missing piece?

The Baltimore Ravens already ranked No. 1 in the NFL in rush yards and attempts per game last season, so is running back Derrick Henry the missing piece to their puzzle?

The Ravens totaled about 156.9 rush yards a game in 2023 through 541 carries. Their offense dominated tremendously on the ground, but this success should be heavily credited to the defense, which allowed opponents to score just 16.5 points per game.

With opponents held to low-scoring outputs, quarterback Lamar Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Monken were allowed to commit to running the ball. However, with their defensive secondary expected to take a few steps back, the offense may need to be even more dynamic this upcoming season,

Furthermore, the Ravens’ rush-by-committee approach now needs to be delegated proportionately.  Will Henry average 20 carries and Jackson 10? How will running back Justice Hill and Keaton Mitchell fit into the equation?

Ultimately, while it is premature to give a swift answer to these preliminary questions, the Ravens need to consider building their secondary with the best defensive backs available in the upcoming NFL Draft. Ravens’ fans should celebrate the arrival of Henry; it wasn’t inadequacy in the run game that ended the Ravens’ season last year.

However, the historic 60-sack, 18-interception season is behind the Ravens’ defense, so offensive excellence may need to balance the books for a secondary that may digress. Henry may need to have his most remarkable season yet if the Ravens plan on returning to the AFC Championship.

The NFL is not rigged: Chiefs win Super Bowl LVIII

Yes the Kansas City Chiefs have won Super Bowl LVIII but instead of blaming Taylor Swift, NFL fans should look at the stats.

The Chiefs’ defense allowed an average of 4.4 points per game in the 4th quarter of their Super Bowl run. San Franciso 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy completed only 60% of his passes last night.

Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has a knack for baiting opponents into passing the ball by showing blitz. Spagnuolo knew his defensive backs could guard well in man coverage but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan found that out the hard way.

Still, Purdy connected on just 23 of his 38 pass attempts and when it mattered most, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made heroic plays.

Only Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has shown NFL fans he can dethrone the Chiefs in the playoffs. The San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills all failed to halt what has now become the NFL powerhouse.

Lastly, Mahomes and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had been winning before Swift started making cameo appearances on the jumbotron. The Chiefs defense forced a jumbo seven total turnovers in the playoffs. Another concerted effort is the reason the Chiefs are yet again, Super Bowl Champions.

Lamar Jackson improves to 8-1 as starter vs. Bengals as Ravens win 34-20

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson led his team in an efficient 34-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday night.

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night. Jackson, who also ran for 54 yards on nine carries, has an 8-1 career record as a starter against the Bengals.

The Ravens now hold a steady lead in the AFC North and get a well-needed 11-day rest.

The win started with an opening-drive touchdown run by running back Gus Edwards. The Ravens were very focused on offense, surrendering zero turnovers and converting on six of their 12 third downs.

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken did much to avoid the type of letdown the team had in a Week 10 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Monken sequenced in 31 running plays and ran a balanced offense against the Bengals.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. worked as a serviceable target for Jackson, needing only four catches to tally  116 receiving yards. With tight end Mark Andrews now injured, perhaps Monken will be looking to feature Beckham more frequently in the passing game.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow has thrown 14 pass touchdowns in 2023

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has thrown 14 touchdowns in nine games played this season.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has thrown 14 touchdowns in nine games played this season. Th Baltimore Ravens will need to focus on halting the Bengals passing game in week 10.

On Sep. 17 the Ravens intercepted Burrow once and escaped a late game rally to win 27-24. The stakes have definitely increased for both teams as they enter the latter stretch of the season.

Burrow and the Bengals, having reached the AFC Championship in both 2021 and 2022, now sit in last place in the AFC North division. Yet, If they are victorious in week 10 be just one game behind the Ravens.

Having stampeded both the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks in week 8 & 9, the Ravens took a step back losing to the Browns in week 10..

Thursday Night Football sets the stage for a very dramatic game where tons of scrutiny will be applied to both quarterback Lamar Jackson and Burrow. This game has clear playoff implications.

5 players receive suspensions for violating NFL’s gambling rules

The National Football League has strict rules on sports gambling and 5 players, including 4 Detroit Lions, received suspensions on Friday.

With the growing legality and popularity of sports gambling, we are seeing more players violate the National Football League’s gambling policy. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, five players have been suspended for sports gambling. Three were banned indefinitely, which equates to at least a year. Four of the players suspended were members of the Detroit Lions.

Shortly after the announcement of the suspensions, the Lions released Quintez Cephus and CJ Moore. The rules concerning sports gambling are rather simple with the NFL:

  • Betting on NFL games is prohibited.
  • Betting on games at the team facility is prohibited. The team facility includes locker room, team hotel and team plane.
  • Betting on non-NFL games is allowed outside of the team facility.

Coincidentally, the pick that the Minnesota Vikings traded out of in the first round of last year’s draft ended up being Williams.

‘I definitely will come back’: Terrell enjoys taking in a new experience

A.J. Terrell took in a new experience on Saturday that he really enjoyed.

The former Clemson and current Atlanta Falcons star cornerback attended his first-ever soccer match, as he was on hand for Atlanta United’s match vs. Columbus Crew on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta — where Terrell plays his home games with the Falcons.

Not only was Terrell there, though, but the Atlanta native participated in Atlanta United’s Golden Spike Tradition and was given the honor of being the Spike Hitter before the match.

“It was great,” Terrell said during an interview with Atlanta United pre-and post-game host and sideline reporter Jillian Sakovits. “Just being able to get the opportunity to go up there with the fans, it was a different experience for me, and being able to let them feel my energy and me being able to feel theirs was definitely big for me.”

Terrell brought his family with him to the match.

“This is my first game so I’m pretty sure it’s everybody’s first game, and we’re just enjoying everything, just comparing this from gameday with the Falcons and now,” Terrell said. “It’s similar, but you wouldn’t really expect all of this to be for soccer, and I see that it’s real big around here, so we’re definitely enjoying it.”

“I definitely will come back, for sure,” he added. “It was a big goal for me to come to a game like this. I’d never been to a soccer game, so I wanted to come.”

Terrell also recently had the honor of throwing out the first pitch at the Atlanta Braves’ game vs. the Chicago Cubs at Truist Park Atlanta on April 27.

A two-time All-ACC selection during his three-year Clemson career (2017-19), Terrell was drafted by the Falcons in the first round (16th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Terrell had a breakout season in his second NFL campaign last year, when he tallied 81 total tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, 16 passes defended and three interceptions in 16 games.

Terrell was asked what fans can expect from the Falcons this season.

“We’re just getting the ball back rolling,” he said. “We’ve got a whole bunch of different pieces in the system right now. Right now, we’re just building chemistry. We’re just taking it day-by-day with OTAs (organized team activities) and just building up to Week 1.”

In 44 games (30 starts) at Clemson, Terrell recorded 107 career tackles (3.5 for loss), 29 pass breakups, six interceptions (returned for a total of 160 yards including a 44-yard touchdown) and two forced fumbles. He started all 15 games in his first year as a starter in 2018, scoring the first points of the College Football Playoff National Championship on a pick-six, and helped Clemson to a 29-1 record in two years as a starter.

One team is reportedly in the best position to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, according to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Speaking on a Philadelphia sports talk radio station on Wednesday, Schefter cited the Philadelphia Eagles as a potential trade partner with the Texans for the former Clemson star.

“The Eagles are more equipped to make a run at Deshaun Watson than any team out there,” Schefter said on 97.5 The Fanatic, via RotoBaller.

Of course, this doesn’t mean a trade will happen in the near future or before the 2021 season, however. Nothing has been resolved in the 22 civil lawsuits against Watson for sexual misconduct, and it does not appear likely to happen this offseason.

Along those lines, Schefter added, “the Philadelphia Eagles should be waiting” for the end of the Watson saga.

Jalen Hurts is currently the Eagles’ quarterback, while Tyrod Taylor is the frontrunner to start for the Texans as things stand now.

Tennessee target, 5-star OL Amarius Mims announces commitment

Tennessee target, 5-star OL Amarius Mims announces commitment.

Less than a week after losing 44-21 to Georgia, Tennessee has missed out on a blue-chip prospect to the same team.

5-star offensive lineman Amarius Mims announced his commitment Wednesday, and the 6-foot-7, 315-pound tackle will be playing for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Tennessee was in the mix throughout Mims’ recruitment, and was one of the final schools he came down to.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Mims is the No. 2 offensive tackle in his class, and the No. 1 overall player in the state of Georgia. He projects as an elite player up front in the SEC.

Tennessee is in a good position with its current 2021 recruiting class, currently at No. 7 in the country and No. 3 in the SEC. The Vols will likely try to continue pursuing Mims, looking to flip him before signing day.

Chargers add FB Gabe Nabers, OL Ryan Groy to active roster

NFL teams can carry 55 players on gameday.

The Chargers signed fullback Gabe Nabers and offensive lineman Ryan Groy to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Bengals, the team announced.

Nabers and Groy both spent training camp with the Bolts and were signed to the practice squad following cutdown day.

Nabers, the undrafted free agent out of Florida State will fill the void at fullback while Groy is additional piece to a moderately banged up offensive line.

This season, teams are allowed to carry 55 players on the active roster on game days.
