PFF calls Teven Jenkins the Bills’ ‘dream scenario’ at 2021 NFL draft

Pro Football Focus calls Teven Jenkins as the Buffalo Bills’ dream scenario at the 2021 NFL draft.

Thankfully for the Bills, they don’t have a “dream scenario” that is make-or-break for them at the 2021 NFL draft.

But Pro Football Focus labeled one for them anyways.

Currently holding the No. 30 overall pick in Round 1, the Bills’ perfect world at the draft was labeled as selecting offensive lineman Teven Jenkins from Oklahoma State.

First, here’s PFF’s breakdown on why:

Jenkins is a road-grading right tackle who earned a 93.6 run-blocking grade this past year. That’ll help their run game a heck of a lot more than any back they draft here. Jenkins can kick inside to guard to try to neutralize Chris Jones in the playoffs and then take on the role of tackle-in-waiting.

The football analytics outlet does have a point with the running back vs. lineman aspect. While the Bills weren’t the best rushing team in the NFL last season, the problem did not appear to sit with their running backs, Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. Often times, they didn’t have much room to work with and potentially a prospect, such as Teven Jenkins, would help there.

Despite that, the Bills sported an elite passing game last season led by quarterback Josh Allen. When it comes to the NFL draft, finding a quarterback is always near the top of every team’s “to-do list.”

Right behind that is typically finding a pass rusher that can ruin the day of an opposing quarterback. That is something the Bills lack on the roster currently, so one can argue bringing that in via a draft pick is truly Buffalo’s “dream scenario.”

Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 4.0

Check out the final mock draft update for 2021.

Here’s my final 2021 NFL mock draft. I’ve projected a pair of trades inside of the top 10, each denoted with an asterisk.

We published more mock drafts and player profiles than ever before this year, so be sure to check our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of the offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • In the last release, a projected Chicago-Atlanta trade gave the Bears their quarterback of the future. In recent weeks, I’ve come around to the idea of the Falcons taking Florida TE Kyle Pitts here. The offense will find ways to get him involved early on, and new head coach Arthur Smith is a former tight ends coach, so you know he’ll be excited to see what he can do with the phenom.
  • That doesn’t mean the Bears won’t make a deal to get into the top 10 for a passer. Carolina lessened its need for a cornerback after signing veteran A.J. Bouye, and I don’t see quarterback being a realistic option after the Sam Darnold trade — if for no reason other than politics. There is still a need for receiver help and a tight end upgrade, but both can wait. The Panthers and Bears swap No. 1 picks, in addition to Carolina picking up future choices for going down to No. 20, which enables Chicago to land North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance to learn in the short term behind Andy Dalton. Provided the GM and coaching staff survives, here’s their chance to get it right after whiffing on Mitchell Trubisky.

[lawrence-related id=458242]

  • I have the New England Patriots mocked for a trade with the Detroit Lions to get into the No. 7 spot to select Justin Fields, leapfrogging other quarterback-needy franchises that may be looking at dealing with Carolina for the eighth pick. Fields can learn for a year behind Cam Newton and then take over in 2022. Josh McDaniels’ system is notoriously complex, and there’s no need to throw Fields to the wolves in the upcoming season’s opening few weeks. If Newton struggles or gets hurt, then all bet are off as to when we’ll see the Ohio State product. I believe McDaniels will indeed replace Bill Belichick one day, and the current OC will have a say in which player he prefers to mold his playbook around.
  • The trade sends Detroit down to 15, where they can still land the best receiver remaining. It could be DeVonta Smith, if the Philadelphia Eagles find Jaylen Waddle to be a better fit for their plans. Waddle could “fall” a few spots and give Detroit the playmaker it likely would have chosen at No. 7.

Colts’ final 2021 mock draft roundup: April 26

The final mock draft roundup of 2021.

The 2021 NFL draft is just days away as the Indianapolis Colts will be looking to make some moves beginning Thursday night with the No. 21 overall pick.

With the draft slated to begin in just a few days, everyone is getting their predictions in—our final mock will come later in the week. But we’ve gone over the picks each week over the last month, and there’s a trend taking place.

Most mocks have the Colts trading back or taking an offensive tackle or edge rusher with the No. 21 overall pick. If you want to take a peek at the older versions, you can find them below:

Here is the final mock draft roundup for the Colts on April 26:

6 prospects who could keep Colts from trading No. 21 pick

Who could keep Indy from trading back?

With the 2021 NFL draft officially one week away, the Indianapolis Colts will be weighing their options of staying put at No. 21 overall and selecting a player or moving back to add more picks in later rounds.

We have talked plenty about the Colts trading down from No. 21 in the draft. Because they gave up their third-rounder in the trade for Carson Wentz, it’s easy to see Chris Ballard trading back to recoup a pick in that round.

We have already taken a look at which teams the Colts could trade with and the history that comes along with trading back from the No. 21 pick.

But what happens if a player the Colts really like falls to their pick? Ballard won’t automatically trade back if there’s a player high on their board that’s available.

So let’s take a look at six prospects who could keep the Colts from trading back from the No. 21 pick:

16 OTs the Colts could draft to replace Anthony Castonzo

Which OTs are best for the Colts?

The Indianapolis Colts offensive line has been considered one of the best in the NFL over the last few years after selecting Quenton Nelson in the 2018 NFL draft.

The unit took on a major loss when their long-time left tackle, Anthony Castonzo, announced his retirement on January 12. His void is still a glaring issue when you take a gander at the current roster. While general manager Chris Ballard added veterans Sam Tevi and Julién Davenport in free agency, both players should be viewed as depth pieces that will compete for a spot on the roster.

Indianapolis currently only has six picks and only two (Nos. 21, 54) of those fall on the first two days of the draft. Ballard has made at least eight selections in his four draft classes so it will be interesting to see if he stays put or trades back to add some ammunition for him to work with. It will be dependent on how the board falls and if one of his guys will fall to the No. 21 pick.

While left tackle is a pressing need, that doesn’t mean it will be the first position off the board for the Colts. Offensive tackle is one of the deeper groups in this class so Ballard can wait if he needs to, but he should leave Day 1 or 2 with the next left tackle that will be counted on to fill Castonzo’s shoes.

There have been 18 offensive tackles selected in the first round of the last five NFL drafts:

2016: 4
2017: 2
2018: 2
2019: 4
2020: 6

Based on recent history, we can expect at least three tackles to hear their names called on the first night. Teams that could select a tackle before Indianapolis include the  Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Football Team, and Chicago Bears. As it is every year, we truly don’t know how the board will fall on April 29.

Let’s take a look at some potential Day 1 and 2 options for the Colts.:

Prospect for the Pack: Oklahoma State OT Teven Jenkins

The draft profile of Oklahoma State OT Teven Jenkins, a potential pick for the Packers in the 2021 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers will enter the 2021 NFL draft hoping to find a few more valuable pieces to add to an otherwise talented roster after winning 26 regular-season games and making the NFC Championship Game in back-to-back seasons under coach Matt LaFleur.

Between now and the draft, Packers Wire will periodically break down one top prospect capable of landing in Green Bay later this month.

Up next is Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins:

What he can do

– Will enter the NFL ready to be a difference-maker in the run game at right tackle. Big, strong and nasty. Just buries people. Finisher

– Bryan Bulaga is 6-5 and 314. Jenkins is 6-6 and 317. Similar body types

– Did 36 reps on the bench. Strength is a major asset

– Good numbers across the board in the athletic testing. High RAS player. The Packers love elite athletes at premium positions

– Gave up just two sacks over his final three seasons, according to Pro Football Focus. He might not have long arms, but he’s so athletic and so coordinated on the move. A little like Bulaga here too; just finds a way to get it done consistently in pass pro

– Versatile for Oklahoma State. Played left and right tackle and even started some games at guard

– Rushers have to use length to beat him because if he gets his hands under your pads, it’s over. Every time

– No problems getting to spots in the zone run game. No issues on the move or getting to the second level

– Game against Joseph Ossai and Texas in 2020 was dominant

– Love his football intelligence. So comfortable handling stunts and twists. Can sense edge blitzers. Reads and reacts to everything happening in front of him

How he fits

Jenkins could have incredible short and long term value in Green Bay. With the ability to play both guard and tackle, he’d provide the Packers with more options for configuring the offensive line during his rookie season, allowing others – such as Elgton Jenkins, Lucas Patrick and Billy Turner – to move around and play preferred positions. Jenkins’ long-term value is at right tackle. He could be one of the NFL’s best on the right side for a long time. And some teams will think he can be a Pro Bowl guard.

NFL comp

Bryan Bulaga wasn’t a tone-setter in the run game, but everything else about Jenkins’ game matches. The size, the toughness, the coordination in pass pro, the football IQ. Neither has long arms or elite quickness, but both just find ways to get the job done every snap. Like Bulaga, Jenkins could have a long successful career at right tackle.

Where Packers could get him

The first round, and it might take an aggressive move up the board to have a chance. Even in a deep class of offensive tackles, he’s too talented to fall far. If somehow he lasts until the 29th pick, the Packers have an easy decision. Home-run pick at 29.

Colts’ mock draft roundup: April 12

Rounding up the mocks for April 12.

We are just over two weeks away from the start of the 2021 NFL draft, which is currently scheduled for April 29. What the Indianapolis Colts will do remains a mystery so we’ll look at some mock drafts to see what the analysts think.

The needs for the Colts are pretty clear after trading for quarterback Carson Wentz. Most would guess the Colts are going to add an offensive tackle to replace Anthony Castonzo or grab an edge rusher to help add some talent to a thin group. You can take a look at the mock draft roundup for April 5 to see how some of the selections changed.

Here’s the mock draft roundup for April 12:
