Instant analysis of Vikings 17-7 Loss vs. 49ers in Preseason Week 2

Major takeaways from the Vikings loss against the 49ers

After joint practices for two days earlier this week, the San Francisco 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-7 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Just an hour and a half before game time, the Vikings announced that 27 of their 85 players on the roster would not play.

In turn, the 49ers also announced that they would also not be playing 27 players.

Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins all missed the game, meaning it was an opportunity for the backup quarterbacks for both sides to get meaningful reps.

For two offensive coaches, the offense was pretty sloppy throughout. Dropped passes, multiple turnovers and numerous missed opportunities for big plays.

Some of that is on the quarterbacks, as they are not what you would consider NFL starting-caliber quarterbacks. The running game was inconsistent on both sides, although the 49ers turned it up at the end of the game to seal the deal.

The game itself left us with some vital takeaways. Here were my four biggest takeaways from Saturday night’s loss.

Vikings sign DT T.Y. McGill in first offseason move

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah makes his first move

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah made his first move on Wednesday in signing defensive tackle T.Y. McGill. It’s the calm before the storm of free agency descends upon Eagan next week.

After spending eight weeks on the Vikings practice squad, McGill got a bump to the active roster for the last two games of the 2021 regular season against the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. He made enough of an impression for Adofo-Mensah to bring him back in to compete for a spot on the 2022 roster.

Before coming to Minnesota, he spent time on the Washington Commanders practice squad and was ultimately released from the team last November.

That prompted the Vikings to swoop right in after dealing with injuries and illness along their defensive front. Life is about opportunities and making the most out of the few moments you truly have to shine. Most would consider McGill a journeyman considering he’s played for nine different football teams since going undrafted in 2015.

But his resilience has continued to earn him opportunities along the way. Can it keep him on the active roster?

That’s the biggest test he faces in 2022.

Eagles to release defensive tackle T.Y. McGill

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to release veteran defensive tackle T.Y. McGill

The Eagles are releasing defensive tackle T.Y. McGill according to Ian Rapoport as the veteran comes off the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

McGill flashed some during training camp and had an impressive preseason debut, but Hassan Ridgeway’s debut in the season opener likely made this move a lot easier.

Eagles roster bubble: Which players helped their cause against the Jets

After a terrible rainstorm ensured that the starters wouldn’t see time at key positions, the Eagles closed out the preseason with a 31-31 tie against the Jets on Friday night.

It was a huge night for players on the roster bubble and we’ve listed the guys who helped their cause the most.

Eagles finish the preseason 0-2-1 after a 31-31 tie vs. Jets

In what can only be described as disappointing, the Eagles finished the 2021 preseason with a 0-2-1 record after a 31-31 tie against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.

Philadelphia looked to have the game wrapped up after a Michael Jacquet 42-yard punt return put them up 31-23 with under a minute remaining.

Jets quarterback James Morgan found the tight end, Kenny Yeboah, in the end, zone on a 42-yard hail mary with no time left on the clock to bring New York within two. Josh Adams slammed the two-point conversion in for the 31-31 tie.

For the Eagles, Joe Flacco went 13-16 for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Mullens had his best game of the preseason, going 10-14 for 98 yards and no interceptions.

Philadelphia will now spend the next four days working to cut the roster down to 53 players by Tuesday, August 31 at 4:00 p.m.

Croom has one touchdown on the season and has seen action at tight end for the Eagles while Jamon Brown landed on the practice squad after being released following a horrible performance against the Ravens.
