Zulgad: Time is running out for Vikings’ 2022 draft class to prove it wasn’t a bust

Time is running out for Vikings’ 2022 draft class as it looks to find it’s identity within the current state of the franchise.

There is no more misguided project involving the NFL draft — and that is saying something — than the immediate attempt to assign overall grades to each team’s selections. A process that takes several years to play itself out is assigned a collective letter mark hours after all the names have been called.

The latest example of the futility accompanying this assignment comes from the Minnesota Vikings’ 2022 draft. Chad Reuter of NFL.com and Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News gave the Vikings A-minus grades. ESPN’s Mel Kiper, the Washington Post’s Mark Maske, and Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports handed out B-minuses. Rob Rang of Fox Sports wasn’t so kind, giving the Vikings a C-plus grade, and Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated handed out a D-minus.

Orr’s negativity has proven to be well-founded and might not be strong enough. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s first draft as the Vikings’ general manager could be headed for an F, depending on how the remaining class members do this season. This concerns those who know how important this month’s draft will be in shaping the future of the Vikings’ roster.

Adofo-Mensah’s defenders will point out that he had only been on the job for a few months before that draft and that the current front office structure wasn’t as set then. That doesn’t excuse the fact that Adofo-Mensah not only traded back with Detroit to go from 12 to 32 in the first round but then missed (at least for now) on three of his first four picks.

Here’s a look at the Vikings’ 10-player draft class from 2022:

Round 1 (32): Lewis Cine, S
Round 2 (42): Andrew Booth Jr., CB
Round 2 (59): Ed Ingram, G
Round 3 (66): Brian Asamoah, LB
Round 4 (118): Akayleb Evans, CB
Round 5 (165): Esezi Otomewo, DT
Round 5 (169): Ty Chandler, RB
Round 6 (184): Vederian Lowe, OL
Round 6 (191): Jalen Nailor, WR
Round 7 (227): Nick Muse, TE

Cine, taken with the last pick of the opening round, has only played in two games and been in for 10 defensive snaps in his first two seasons. Cine suffered a compound fracture in his left leg early in his rookie season but declared himself ready to go during offseason workouts last spring.

But he only played in seven regular-season games, despite the fact that defensive coordinator Brian Flores often employed three safeties simultaneously, including 2020 sixth-round pick Josh Metellus.

It wasn’t much better with Booth and Asamoah, who were expected to step into prominent roles last season. Booth played in all 17 games and got a chance on defense. Still, it appears the Vikings will head into offseason workouts with 2023 third-round selection Mekhi Blackmon and free agent addition Shaq Griffin as the outside corners and Byron Murphy Jr. inside in the nickel.

Asamoah only played 36 snaps on defense last season, and while he has appeared in 29 games over two years, he has yet to get a start. The starting inside linebackers are Ivan Pace Jr., an undrafted free agent who excelled as a rookie last season, and free agent signee Blake Cashman.

Ingram struggled at right guard in his first year but started all 18 games, including the playoff loss to the Giants, and showed improvement in starting 15 games in 2023. The fact that Ingram is the most successful player from this group isn’t a positive.

Evans has shown promise in his first two seasons but dealt with concussion issues as a rookie and was benched in a Dec. 24 game against Detroit last year at U.S. Bank Stadium. He returned to start in the final two games of the season, but the decision to sign Griffin likely means Evans will find himself on the sideline when the Vikings play their opener.

Of the Vikings’ final five picks, Otomewo and Lowe are no longer with the team, Nailor has dealt with injuries and spent three stints on injured reserve last season, and Muse has played two snaps on offense in 12 games.

Chandler likely will serve as the backup to free agent running back Aaron Jones, who joined the Vikings after being released by the Packers. The Vikings were so hesitant to turn to Chandler as their starter last season that they spent much of the year with the struggling Alexander Mattison as their top back and didn’t turn over that job to Chandler until the final four games. Mattison was released this offseason.

If you have wondered why the Vikings don’t have more depth, this is why. Adofo-Mensah and Co., turned out two players the coaching staff currently trusts (Ingram and Chandler) and six that remain on the roster but with uncertain roles.

The offseason and training camp could be the last chance for guys like Cine, Booth, and Asamoah to prove that the generous grades so many gave the Vikings’ draft class in 2022 were warranted. The problem is the clock is ticking, and some might believe it’s already run out.

Revisiting preseason bold Vikings predictions: What did we get right

Tyler Forness reflects on his 2023 bold predictions and what he got right and wrong with analysis on each

The 2023 season for the Minnesota Vikings is over. The team finished 7-10 this season and had a real chance to make the playoffs when they were at 7-6 but lost their final four games.

Before the season, predictions for the team were all over the place. Some thought they would get the NFC North title for the second consecutive season while others thought they would take a sharp nosedive and finish as low as fourth in the division.

Before the season began, I made six different bold predictions that felt very plausible at the time. Let’s take a look at those and what happened with each.

Vikings inactives vs. Lions include Brian O’Neill, Ed Ingram

Brian O’Neill and Ed Ingram highlight the Vikings’ inactive list for the regular season finale

The Minnesota Vikings have released their inactive list for Sunday’s regular season finale against the Detroit Lions.

  • QB Jaren Hall (emergency third QB)
  • CB Mekhi Blackmon
  • CB Byron Murphy Jr.
  • S Theo Jackson
  • RG Ed Ingram
  • RT Brian O’Neill
  • DE Jaquelin Roy

The Vikings aren’t just missing two of their top three cornerbacks in a must-win game, they are also missing the entire right side of their offensive line. Both Blake Brandel and David Quessenberry have played admirably in relief of those two.

Andrew Booth Jr., Joejuan Williams and Jaylin Williams will all be asked to do a little bit more on Sunday in their absence. Lewis Cine might also get some playing time with Jackson out.

The game kicks off at noon CST.

Vikings release first injury report for Week 18 vs. Lions

The Minnesota Vikings released their first injury report on Wednesday afternoon and it has nine players on it.

The Minnesota Vikings released their first injury report ahead of their week 18 matchup against the Detroit Lions and it has nine players on it.

  • CB Byron Murphy Jr. (knee): Did not practice
  • WR Jalen Nailor (concussion): Did not practice
  • RT Brian O’Neill (ankle): Did not practice
  • DE Jaquelin Roy (ankle): Did not practice
  • CB Mekhi Blackmon (shoulder): Limited
  • RG Ed Ingram (shoulder): Limited
  • S Theo Jackson (toe): Limited
  • TE Nick Muse (knee): Limited
  • S Harrison Smith (shoulder): Limited

Once again, both Murphy and Nailor didn’t practice. They have missed the last two and three games, respectively, due to injury. O’Neill being on the report is likey due to wanting to rest his injured ankle, as he already played last week against the Green Bay Packers.

Muse, Smith and Ingram are all new additions to the report. Ingram left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. The progress throughout the week will determine whether or not they play on Sunday.

Analyzing final Vikings injury report for Week 15 vs. Bengals

The Vikings will be without two starters on offense with at least one returning starter

The Minnesota Vikings are set to take on the Cincinnati Bengals in a Saturday afternoon clash on December 16th at noon CST.

Heading into the game, there were many injuries that the Vikings were concerned about, including ones to multiple offensive starters. The final injury report for the week 15 matchup has been released and it reflects better than expected.

Let’s break it all down.

Vikings Wednesday injury report adds one name

The injury report on Wednesday showed one added name for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings held their first practice of the week, as they did a walkthrough on Tuesday. The injury report did add one name to it with one other player seeing improvement.

  • RG Ed Ingram (hip): Full
  • WR Justin Jefferson (chest): Limited
  • LG Dalton Risner (ankle): Limited
  • RT Brian O’Neill (ankle): Did not practice
  • WR Jalen Nailor (concussion): Did not practice
  • RB Alexander Mattison (ankle): Did not practice
  • G Chris Reed (illness): Did not practice

Reed was the addition to the report with an illness. That could mead a lot of things but also will be worth monitoring moving forward.

Ingram taking a step forward is a really important distinction to his status on Sunday. With O’Neill still nursing his ankle injury, if Ingram returns, could Blake Brandel start at tackle or will it be Quessenberry?

Thursday afternoon will see the final injury report released and that will tell us who will and won’t play on Saturday.

Vikings initial Week 15 injury report features 6 players

Jefferson highlights the injury report heading into week 15

The Minnesota Vikings released their initial injury report for Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

  • RG Ed Ingram (hip): Limited
  • WR Justin Jefferson (chest): Limited
  • LG Dalton Risner (ankle): Limited
  • RT Brian O’Neill (ankle): Did not practice
  • WR Jalen Nailor (concussion): Did not practice
  • RB Alexander Mattison (ankle): Did not practice

Ingram missed Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders with a hip injury. He was a late addition to the injury report last Thursday.

Jefferson is day-to-day with his chest injury. Early indications are that he will play but anything can happen.

Risner did return to the game with his ankle injury on Sunday. His being limited in practice is likely just out of precaution than anything.

Nailor having a concussion or being in the protocol wasn’t something known before today’s injury report. If trends continue, Nailor is likely to miss Saturday’s game. He was the fourth wide receiver after Jefferson left the game.

Mattison also did not practice with his ankle injury. He left the game and did not return. If he was unable to go, Ty Chandler would be the likely starter with DeWayne McBride likely making his NFL debut off of the practice squad.

Like Mattison, O’Neill left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. The last time that happened, he had partially torn his Achilles tendon.

The injury report updates from the next two days will tell us a lot about where things stand.

Stock up, stock down in Vikings 3-0 win vs. Raiders

In an ugly win like this one, multiple stocks saw movement for the Vikings

For the first time since 1971, the Minnesota Vikings won a game by a score of 3-0. The Vikings outlasted the Las Vegas Raiders in Allegiant Stadium to improve to 7-6.

It was ugly, very ugly. The offenses combined for 430 total yards and 24 total first downs. The passing games combined for 243 yards through the air, an almost unheard-of number in the modern era.

Ugly games happen in the NFL all the time, but they aren’t usually like this. The last game to end by a score of 3-0 was in 2007 when a John-Beck-led Miami Dolphins team fell to Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers in a game that the NFL dubbed “The Monday Night Mud Bowl.” But being on the winning end of a game like this is much better than the alternative.

In a win this hard-fought, some players are bound to see their stocks rise, and others will see theirs fall amidst all the chaos.

Ed Ingram highlights Vikings inactives vs. Raiders

Ingram will miss his first game in the National Football League on Sunday

The Minnesota Vikings released their inactive list for Sunday afternoon’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders and it included a starter on the offensive line.

  • QB Jaren Hall-Emerbency third QB
  • S Lewis Cine
  • TE Nick Muse
  • RG Ed Ingram
  • OT Hakeem Adeniji

Ingram appeared on the injury report on Thursday with a hip injury. He felt discomfort before the bye week but was cleared. He felt it come back during the week and will miss the game.

Ingram will be replaced by Blake Brandel. Ingram hasn’t missed a snap since earning the starting job during training camp in 2022.

Cine being out again is a frustrating one for the Vikings. It’s likely due to his lack of utility on special teams. With Theo Jackson having an illness earlier in the week, it did appear at one point that we might get to see Cine play some on defense but that’s not going to happen on Sunday.

The Vikings and Raiders kick off at 3:05 p.m. Central.

Ed Ingram added to Vikings injury list with a hip injury

Ed Ingram is as a limited participant after not being listed on Wednesday’s injury report

With the Minnesota Vikings fighting for their playoff lives, and having suffered numerous injuries already, the last thing they need is another one. Especially up front when facing one of the most tenacious pass rushers in the NFL, Las Vegas Raiders DE Maxx Crosby.

Unfortunately, that appears to be the situation they’re facing with the addition of Ed Ingram to the injury report.

After not being listed on Wednesday’s report, Ingram popped up as a limited participant in Thursday’s practice. It’s unknown what the exact injury is, or what the extent of the injury is, but Ingram was listed with simply a “hip” injury.

The bye week came at a great time for the Vikings in terms of getting healthy for the stretch run. Their biggest weapon, Justin Jefferson, is finally ready to return to action after missing a significant portion of the season with a hamstring injury.

The good news for the Vikings is everyone else practiced in full on Thursday, including safety Theo Jackson who missed practice with an illness.

To see Ingram added to the list is certainly a blow to a squad who needs to turn their recent skid around if they want to see playoff football. Hopefully Ingram’s addition to the injury list is just a precaution and he’ll be fine for Sunday.
