Packers beat out Bears in hiring new assistant coach Sean Mannion

The Packers have a “bright” new offensive assistant in Sean Mannion, and they beat out the Bears to get him.

The Green Bay Packers believe they have a “bright” new offensive coach in Sean Mannion, and the icing on the cake was beating out the Chicago Bears to land the former NFL quarterback.

According to coach Matt LaFleur, Mannion decided to join the Packers coaching staff after interviews with both the Packers and Bears following the 2023 season.

Here’s how LaFleur explained it: “He was getting ready to go interview for Chicago. It was actually during the NFC Championship Game, which I really didn’t care to watch, I jumped on a Zoom call with him in the second half, and he showed me what he was going to present, and I told him, ‘Wow, that’s pretty good, I think you should come up to Green Bay right when you’re doing when that interview.’ I’m surprised they let him out of the building. They tried to get him, but I guess we had more to offer.”

Mannion, a third-round pick of the Rams in 2015 who spent nine years in the NFL, had previous experience with both LaFleur and new Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. Instead of teaming with Waldron and helping the Bears get the quarterback position fixed, Mannion chose an opportunity to work with LaFleur and Jordan Love in Green Bay.

LaFleur said Mannion will work primarily out of the quarterback room as an offensive assistant.

“I love his past experience. I’ve coached him before in LA. I always figured he was going to go down this route. Matter of fact, when we played him earlier in the year, he told me he was going to get into coaching, and I said, alright, well, let me know when you’re going to become a coach,” LaFleur said.

Mannion spent time on the practice squad of the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks in 2023.

In 2017, LaFleur was the offensive coordinator for the Rams while Mannion was the backup quarterback behind Jared Goff.

“He’s always been a guy I’ve always respected how he went about his process, how he prepared for games, how he helped Jared in that situation being a backup for us,” LaFleur said.

Mannion was a four-year starter at Oregon State and played in 14 regular season games — with three starts — at the NFL level. In Green Bay, he’ll get a chance to work under LaFleur and Tom Clements, two veteran coaches.

“We’re lucky to have him,” LaFleur said. “I really think this guy is going to have a bright future for us and in the coaching profession.”

Former NFL QB Sean Mannion joining Packers offensive coaching staff

The Packers are adding 9-year NFL veteran quarterback Sean Mannion to Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff.

The Green Bay Packers will add a veteran NFL quarterback and familiar face to Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff on offense. According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, LaFleur and the Packers are hiring 9-year NFL veteran Sean Mannion as an assistant coach who will work with quarterbacks and the passing game.

It’s unclear what Mannion’s addition means for quarterbacks coach Tom Clements.

Per Henderson, Mannion’s “intelligence and understanding of the game” made him a likely coaching candidate following his playing career. He’ll get his start in Green Bay, where he’ll get a chance to work with Jordan Love and Sean Clifford in 2024.

Mannion has a clear connection with Green Bay: He was a backup quarterback in Los Angeles for LaFleur — then the offensive coordinator — during the 2017 season. He also spent the 2022 offseason with former Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota.

Mannion, a third-round pick in 2015, appeared in 14 NFL games and made three starts while with the Rams and Minnesota Vikings. He finished last season on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks. Mannion’s final NFL appearance in a regular season game was a start against the Packers at Lambeau Field late in the 2021 season — Green Bay won 37-10.

The Packers’ current quarterbacks coaches are Clements, who could be contemplating retirement, and assistant Connor Lewis.

Vikings’ practice squad QB David Blough signed by Arizona Cardinals

The former Lions quarterback has five starts in his career

During the preseason, the Minnesota Vikings had some quarterback issues. They initially went into training camp with Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion but it became evident that they couldn’t roll into the season with those two behind starter Kirk Cousins.

Before the season started, they traded for Nick Mullens to be the backup quarterback and signed David Blough to the practice squad as extra depth. He had appeared in seven games with five starts and threw for 1,033 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions.

With Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray suffering a season-ending torn ACL on Monday night, they signed Blough off of the Vikings practice squad to provide depth behind Colt McCoy for the rest of the season. They had recently signed Carson Strong to the practice squad. He ran the true Air Raid while at Nevada and will translate well to what the Cardinals run in Arizona.

With the move, the Vikings now have an open spot on their practice squad.
