91 days until Vikings season opener: Every player to wear No. 91

With 91 days remaining until the season opener, we take a look at the best to wear the number for the Minnesota Vikings.

It’s the final countdown…

Well, sort of.

The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2023 regular season in 91 days at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

From now until then, we will take a trip down memory lane and count each day by revisiting the players that have worn that specific jersey number.

Edge rusher Patrick Jones II currently wears the number after changing from No. 93 last season. The number has switched hands over the years, but it will most likely be remembered for Ray Edwards, who wore it for five seasons.

49ers re-sign DL T.Y. McGill to 1-year contract

T.Y. McGill made a handful of nice plays in 9 games for the #49ers last year. He’s re-signing on a 1-year deal:

The 49ers on Thursday agreed to re-sign one of their own free agents. Veteran defensive lineman T.Y. McGill is signing a one-year deal with the club after playing well in his brief stint with the team to end last season per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

McGill was a practice squad addition whose services were needed when injuries piled up on the interior of the defensive line. He wound up playing in nine games and posted a pair of tackles for loss with a pair of quarterback hits.

There were multiple short yardage plays where McGill got through to either make a stop or alter the play to help San Francisco’s defense get a stop.

The 2022 season was McGill’s eighth in the NFL. He also spent time with the Colts, Browns, Eagles, Chargers and Vikings. Now his ninth season will be a chance to carve out a real role along the interior of a 49ers defensive line that has some holes to fill behind new presumed starter Javon Hargrave.

7 former Vikings have a chance at winning a Super Bowl

All four teams remaining have at least one former Minnesota Viking

The Minnesota Vikings were eliminated from the playoffs when they lost to the New York Giants in the NFL’s wild-card round of the playoffs. Even with the Vikings out, there are still some reasons to cheer during Conference Championship Sunday.

This weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Cincinnati Bengals for the AFC Championship. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles host the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC Championship. Let’s look at some former Vikings who are lacing up for different teams this weekend.

Vikings reach injury settlement with T.Y. McGill

The defensive tackle is now a free agent

The Minnesota Vikings made a somewhat surprising move in placing T.Y. McGill on injured reserve on the day before final cutdown day.

On Tuesday morning, multiple reports came out that the Vikings had reached an injury settlement with DL T.Y. McGill.

Injury settlements work like this. The two sides agree on how long the player will be out, they get paid by the team for those weeks and become a free agent immediately after.

Considering his injury was not viewed to be serious, this is a puzzling move for the Vikings. McGill had played extremely well. The idea with the injury settlement without paying him for a single week says that they didn’t see a future for him with the team at all.

The Vikings now only have WR Olabisi Johnson on injured reserve.

Minnesota Vikings make five roster moves

The Vikings still have 22 roster moves left

On Monday afternoon, the Minnesota Vikings announced five roster moves, including placing two players on injured reserve.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that T.Y. McGill was going to be released by the team. With his ankle injury having initially been viewed as short-term, McGill might receive an injury settlement instead of staying on injured reserve. It could also o

Myron Mitchell and Tye Smith were reported earlier in the day and Timon Parris was expected after a really rough outing

After five roster moves today, the Vikings still have 22 more roster moves left. You can keep track of all of them with our final roster tracker here.

Minnesota Vikings release T.Y. McGill

A surprise cut of one of the Vikings preseason standouts

The roster cuts are starting to roll in and the Minnesota Vikings have made their first one in T.Y. McGill.

McGill was one of the best performers during the preseason, accruing 3.5 sacks and nine pressures over 29 pass rush reps. He did injure his ankle in the first quarter against the Denver Broncos and did not return. Per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, that seemed to seal his fate.

This could also be a salary cap maneuver by the Vikings. If he isn’t signed by another team, his salary isn’t guaranteed if he signs after week one.

McGill, who could also be a practice squad candidate, is the first of 27 roster cuts the Minnesota Vikings will be making over the next two days. Be sure to follow along with our roster cut tracker.

Update: McGill was placed on injured reserve as announced by the team.

Two Vikings ruled out with injuries

Tough news for the Vikings in their final preseason game

Injuries have hit the Vikings hard in the first quarter against the Denver Broncos.

First, linebacker Brian Asamoah limped off the field on his own power on a screen pass. He did return to the game on the next possession.

Shortly thereafter, two Minnesota Vikings were ruled out with injuries. T.Y. McGill (ankle) and Troy Dye (foot) both will not return.

On the second drive, safety Josh Metellus also went down with an injury. The Vikings only suited up 52 players, meaning their options at each position are limited just like a regular game.

Not what you want to see for the Vikings.

Vikings vs Broncos: 3 things to watch for during Saturday night’s game

During tonight’s final preseason game against the Denver Broncos, here are three things you should be watching for.

The preseason for the Minnesota Vikings wraps up tonight as they take on the Denver Broncos at 8 pm central time.

The third preseason game is an interesting one this year for the Vikings. Historically, it has been the game where the starters get the most run in preparation for the regular season opener in just 10 days.

With only three preseason games, that contest has moved to the second game. The Vikings, having had joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers during the week chose to rest all but one of their starters.

Going into Saturday’s game, head coach Kevin O’Connell hadn’t given any clear direction as to whether the starters would be playing in the game.

For the sake of this piece, we are going with the assumption that the Vikings choose not to play the starters and we get to see a lot of developmental players get quality snaps. With that in mind, here are three things to watch for in Saturday’s game against the Broncos.
