Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2021-22 season

Pay special attention to these players this season.

The puck has dropped on the 2021-22 NHL season, and the full 82-game schedule has returned. Besides the usual amount of hockey to look forward to once again, there also is a new team that has taken the ice. One player on that team played collegiate hockey at Notre Dame, as did nine other players who are starting the year on NHL rosters. That number could grow later this season with 15 other former Irish players starting play in the AHL, but for now, here are the 10 you can see at hockey’s top level at this moment:

The Lightning partied so hard at their victory boat parade that they dented the Stanley Cup

Not Lord Stanley!

The Stanley Cup has been through a lot over the years. From being tossed off a deck into a pool — supposedly — to being a dog’s food bowl, the Stanley Cup has seen a lot of wear and tear.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have now contributed to that longstanding tradition, as on Monday during their boat parade celebrating back-to-back championships, they somehow put quite a sizable dent in the Stanley Cup! Pictures circulated late in the afternoon of a Tampa Bay player holding the Stanley Cup with its bowl caved in on one side, then NHL reporters confirmed the story that the trophy had suffered some damage.

Here’s how the Stanley Cup looked at the end of Tampa Bay’s victory celebrations.

That’s a dent alright! Luckily, the Stanley Cup that was damaged is the traveling Stanley Cup that’s used for celebrations such as this. The original Stanley Cup sits at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, safe and sound.

Thankfully, the Lightning will be able to repair the damaged sustained to the Stanley Cup after shipping it to Montreal for a fix up. The irony of the Stanley Cup going to Montreal just for repairs should not be lost on any of us, too.

And hey, at least some of the jokes have been funny as well!

Just one more dust up to add to the list of Stanley Cup damages.

Duncan Keith has spent his entire 16-year career with the Chicago Blackhawks, but it looks like that is coming to an end very soon. Rumors came out the past few days that Chicago is working on trading him to either the Pacific Northwest or Western Canada.

Keith spent two seasons with the Spartans before being selected by the Blackhawks in the second round (54th overall) in the 2002 NHL Draft. Keith scored six goals and recorded 18 assists in 56 games with the Spartans.

Keith spent two seasons with the AHL affiliate team Norfolk Admirals before being called up to the Blackhawks in 2005. Keith has since had a very successful career.

Keith has played in 1,192 games, scored 105 goals and recorded 520 assists. He has made the All-Star Game in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2017, won two Winter Olympics Gold medals, and won three Stanley Cup Championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Individual awards he has won include the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2010 and 2014, the NHL First All-Star Team in 2010 and 2014, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2015.

Keep an eye out for Duncan Keith to be on the move within the coming weeks.

Only one former Ohio State hockey player has ever won a Stanley Cup

Surprisingly, only one former Ohio State hockey player has ever hoisted the Stanley Cup. Let us introduce you.

It might be the best trophy in all of sports, the Stanley Cup. The trophy was commissioned in 1892 and is a shining masterpiece of all trophies. Win an NHL championship, and every player from the team gets his name engraved on the cup and even gets to spend time with the cup however each desires.

Not everyone is a hockey fan of course, especially in the football-crazed state of Ohio, but with an NHL team now calling Columbus home, there has been a lot of cross-over between Buckeye football fans and Blue Jackets’ fans. That has lent itself to following OSU hockey a little more as well.

However, for all the success the Buckeye hockey program has had as of late including a Frozen Four appearance in 2018, the other major contact sport has not seen as much success as what we have see on the gridiron.

And with the Stanley Cup Finals between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadians now getting ready to take center stage next week, we’re here to give you a little history lesson on the one and only former Ohio State player to ever win a Stanley Cup.

For those of you who are die-hard fans, you will know the name Jamie Macoun. For others, let us introduce you to the Candian native.

Macoun played for Ohio State from 1980 to 1983 and eventually dropped out of school after missing a class and being ruled ineligible to play in the NCAA, instead signing a contract with the Calgary Flames. He was an all-rookie defenseman for the 1983-84 season, He played a few years and even had to rehab through a career-threatening car accident before he won his first Stanley Cup with the Flames in the 1988-1989 season.

Macoun spent six years in Toronto when he was traded there in a blockbuster deal in 1992, then was traded to Detroit late in 1998 where he helped the Red Wings to a Stanley Cup with some depth on defense. And that, Buckeye friends, would be the only two Stanley Cups a former Ohio State hockey player has lifted above his head. Ever.

There are no former Buckeyes on either Tampa Bay or Montreal so that trend will continue. But, at least the head coach of the Lightning is named Jon Cooper, so there’s your rooting interest. Michigan is not involved in the contest, so karma should not be a thing to be concerned about if you are a Lighting fan.

Notre Dame Freshman Forwards Hoping for 2020 NHL Draft Selections

Tuesday and Wednesday will mark the achievement of a lifelong dream for many young hockey players. That dream is to be drafted by the NHL.

Tuesday and Wednesday will mark the achievement of a lifelong dream for many young hockey players. That dream is to be drafted by the NHL. This year’s draft could feature two Notre Dame freshman forwards. Landon Slaggert and Ryder Rolston are ranked 88th and 102nd, respectively, in the final North American Prospect Rankings.

Though neither player has appeared in a game for the Irish yet, hockey is rich in both of their families. Slaggert continues a Notre Dame tradition in his family, as his brother, Graham, is entering his junior season with the Irish, and his father, Andy, is an associate head coach who is in his 28th season with the program. Rolston’s father, Brian, began his 17-year NHL career by winning the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1995, which came after winning the 1992 national championship with Lake Superior State under Jeff Jackson.

Six drafted players currently are on Notre Dame’s roster. The all-time drafted player total for the Irish is 85. At least one current or former Irish player has been selected in the draft every year since 2004.

Watching the Tampa Bay Lightning celebrating the Stanley Cup in an empty arena was so weird

The Lightning still had a lot of fun celebrating.

The Tampa Bay Lightning capped off a long few months inside the NHL bubble by winning the Stanley Cup on Monday night with a 2-0 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of the series in Edmonton.

It’s the Lightning’s first Stanley Cup since 2004 and it comes a year after they were swept out of the first round of the playoffs in stunning fashion after finishing the season with the best record in hockey.

So this one meant even more to the guys who had to go through that and then had to battle through a long time in the bubble in Canada.

Here they are celebrating after the final horn, which was pretty awesome and felt like a normal Stanley Cup celebration:

Then they held the whole trophy presentation in an empty arena and while it was well done, it’s just so weird to see them celebrating in an empty arena. It was also weird to not hear anyone boo Gary Bettman:

Surreal, right? While it’s not an ideal setting by any means, it was still fun to see them celebrating the Cup:

Congrats to the Lightning.

NHL Picks and Best Bets: 2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions

Looking at the NHL betting odds to win the 2019-20 Stanley Cup Final, with NHL futures picks and best bets.

The 2019-20 Stanley Cup will be up for grabs later this summer as the NHL season resumes with a 24-team playoff structure. The expanded postseason has opened up the odds, providing greater profit margins for sports bettors. Below, we’ll look at the Stanley Cup futures odds, and make our picks and best bets at BetMGM.

St. Louis Blues (+1000)

The defending Stanley Cup champions finished the abbreviated regular season atop the ultra-competitive Central Division at 42-19-10 for 94 points through 71 games. They scored 225 goals and allowed just 193, all without star RW Vladimir Tarasenko (shoulder) for the majority of the season.

Tarasenko will return following the break and unlike most teams who try to defend a Stanley Cup title, the Blues are plenty rested after going the distance in 2018-19. The pressure has also faded, at least slightly, due to the prolonged break.

The Blues are only sixth by the odds to win the Cup despite finishing first in the Western Conference and receiving a Qualification Round bye. They’re a strong pick as the first team with odds of 10/1 or higher.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Contender

Edmonton Oilers (+2300)

The extended mid-season interruption will help level the competitive playing field for all 24 teams in the expanded playoffs. For this reason, it’s smart to trust the Oilers, who are led by C Connor McDavid and C Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl and McDavid finished 1-2 in both points and assists in the regular season, and they’ll be able to take advantage of any team showing signs of rust defensively.

Believe in the raw talent of the Oilers’ two stars as they’ll look to outscore the competition in what’s sure to be a more wide-open playoff-style than to which we’re accustomed.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Long shot

Florida Panthers (+6500)

Alternatively, look at the Panthers as your Stanley Cup dart throw. They ranked sixth in the Eastern Conference with 231 goals in the regular season while going 35-26-8. G Sergei Bobrovsky, a marquee free-agent addition, struggled through 50 games to post a .900 save percentage and a 3.23 goals against average.

The two-time Vezina Trophy winner is the biggest X-factor in this new playoff structure. The break has given him plenty of time to regroup and move past his regular-season struggles. If he can return to form, the Panthers could be vaulted into a long postseason run.
