Chicago Blackhawks sign Notre Dame captain Landon Slaggert to contract

Good luck, Landon!

With Notre Dame’s season officially over, captain [autotag]Landon Slaggert[/autotag] finally can turn professional. He wasted no time as one day after the Irish’s season ended, he signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him in the third round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

This past season, Slaggert set collegiate career highs of 31 points and 20 goals as he played 36 games. Over 136 games with the Irish, he scored 92 points, including 47 goals.

[autotag]Carter Slaggert[/autotag], Landon’s brother, just finished his first season with the Irish, scoring seven points over 32 games. He’ll be the second of his brothers to turn pro after former Irish captain [autotag]Graham Slaggert[/autotag], who has played this season with the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

Thanks to Landon for his years of service to the Irish, and it’s great that the Slaggert family will continue to be part of the program for a little longer. In the meantime, good luck to Landon in the pros.

Notre Dame’s Max Ellis, Graham Slaggert make pro debuts for same team

A proud day for the Irish.

Max Ellis and Graham Slaggert gave all they could to Notre Dame. Now, it’s time for them to move on and begin their professional careers. As luck would have it, they both remain teammates with the Toronto Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate. As further luck would have it, they made their pro debuts on the same day. The Marlies made sure to document the moment on social media:

Neither player, nor fellow former Irish teammate Alex Steeves factored into the Marlies’ 4-1 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins. However, Ellis had a few scoring chances that were worth documenting:

Slaggert played in a role in setting up another chance:

All three former Notre Dame players will hope to contribute as the Marlies continue their push for the Calder Cup playoffs. With Steeves having been around the entire season except for three games with the Maple Leafs, he is sure to show his former-turned-current teammates the ropes. It should be fun for all of them.

Notre Dame’s Spencer Stastney is Big Ten Third Star of the Week

Congratulations, Spencer!

After Notre Dame earned a weekend split against Minnesota, one of its players has been rewarded. Defenseman Spencer Stastney is the latest Big Ten Third Star of the Week. This is the second consecutive week an Irish player has earned that honor after Ryder Rolston won it last week. Stastney was honored alongside goaltenders Erik Portillo of Michigan and Jakub Dobes of Ohio State.

Stastney, who was an honorable mention on the preseason All-Big Ten Team, led the Irish with three assists in the two games against the Gophers. One of those assists helped Landon Slaggert score the game-winner in overtime of the second game. That increased his team-leading total in that category to 15.

This is the first time Stastney has been named a Big Ten star. In addition to this, he and Irish teammate Graham Slaggert are candidates for this year’s Senior CLASS Award, which is given to a senior or graduate student who excels in competition, character, community and classroom.

Notre Dame names captains for 2021-22 season

Good picks for the Irish?

With the first game on the horizon, Notre Dame has named its five captains for the upcoming season. Wearing the ‘C’ will be defenseman Adam Karashik and forwards Graham Slaggert and Jake Pivonka. Serving as alternate captains will be defensemen Spencer Stastney and Nick Leivermann. All of the aforementioned are seniors except for Karshik, who is a graduate student.

Slaggert and Leivermann are two of the Irish’s top three returning scorers. Slaggert led the Irish with 18 assists last season to go with seven goals. Leivermann was the Irish’s top scoring defenseman in 2020-21 with 12 of his 17 points coming on assists.

Karashik is a transfer who played the past four years with UConn and was one of the Huskies’ captains in 2020-21. Pivonka, who didn’t miss a game last season, currently is out with an injury. Stastney recently joined Slaggert on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.

The Irish will get their first taste of game action Sunday with an exhibition against the U.S. National Team Development Program. Their first regular-season game is Oct. 9 when they welcome Long Island University to Compton Family Ice Arena.

Notre Dame Dominates Ohio State in Weekend Series Opener

Notre Dame had an opportunity to get back to .500 with Friday’s series opener at Ohio State. It did so with authority.

Notre Dame had an opportunity to get back to .500 with Friday’s series opener at Ohio State. It did so with authority. After a start that made some Notre Dame fans nervous, the Irish let them know in no uncertain terms that this was their game. Their 6-1 win represented the most times the Buckeyes have been scored upon this season.

Although it took about half the first period for the Irish (9-9-1, 7-7-1) to even record their first shot on goal, they drew first blood on a Spencer Stastney goal from the left faceoff circle. A couple of minutes later, Nate Clurman was whistled for checking from behind and, after a review, received a game misconduct. With plenty of time still on the five-minute Buckeyes power play, Landon Slaggert was sent to the box for hooking, forcing the Irish to skate two men down. Incredibly, the Irish’s penalty kill, helped by some nice saves from Dylan St. Cyr, got the job done and kept Ohio State (5-13-1, 5-12-0) off the scoreboard that entire time.

With momentum on their side, the Irish seized control in the second period, outshooting the Buckeyes, 18-5. They most of it by getting goals from Matt and Alex Steeves, Jesse Lansdell and Landon Slaggert, who scored 25 seconds into a power play. Nick Leivermann added a goal in the third, but all action was a formality at that point.

Alex Steeves was the Irish’s best player with three assists to go with his second-period tally. Graham Slaggert picked up two assists, and Lansdell and Leivermann also got into the assists column. St. Cyr stopped 23 of 24 shots for his sixth win of the season.

Notre Dame’s Graham Slaggert is Big Ten’s First Star of the Week

Notre Dame wasn’t going to knock Minnesota from its No. 1 ranking by sweeping it over the weekend and not be honored somehow.

Notre Dame wasn’t going to knock Minnesota from its No. 1 ranking by sweeping it over the weekend and not be honored somehow. It began with the Irish entering the latest poll at 16th. But who should get an individual honor? How about Graham Slaggert as the First Star of the Week in the Big Ten?

Perhaps it was Slaggert’s play in the first game against the Gophers that caught people’s attention. He picked up assists on the Irish’s first two goals and then scored the game-winning in a 3-2 win. That three-point performance, a career high, brought him to 11 points, the most in a season for the South Bend native. He joins Ryan Bischel and Matt Ellis as Notre Dame players who have been one of the Big Ten Three Stars of the Week this season.

Having won three of their past four games, the Irish are third in the Big Ten with a 5-4-1 conference record and a 7-6-1 record overall. One point separates them from both second-place Wisconsin and fourth-place Michigan. They’ll play the latter of those teams for their next weekend series. Even though it’s still early in the second half of the season, the series could play a major role in how the conference tournament will be seeded.

Notre Dame knocks off No. 1

The Notre Dame men’s hockey team knocked off the top-ranked Minnesota Goldepn Gophers on Friday night in Minneapolis. Details all here:

MINNEAPOLIS — The Fighting Irish twice erased one-goal deficits and then Graham Slaggert scored the only goal of the third period to lift Notre Dame to a 3-2 win at top-ranked Minnesota on Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

“I thought we played a good 60 minute hockey game,” head coach Jeff Jackson said after the win. “Pretty much in every aspect of the game I thought we did a nice job. It was good to see us put together a power-play goal. We did a good job managing the puck, so for us it was a big step in being able to string together a full 60.”

It was the first time the Irish defeated a top ranked team since knocking off Boston College, 2-1 in overtime, on March 1, 2014.

Graham Slaggert’s game winner was his career-best third point of the night, having also assisted on goals by Landon Slaggert and Alex Steeves. Landon Slaggert finished with two points as he assisted on Graham’s game winner.

Ryan Bischel stopped 17 of the 19 shots he faced to earn the win, which was his third road win of the season. In the Minnesota net, Jack LaFontaine totaled 24 saves as the Irish outshot the Gophers 27-19 for the game, including an 11-4 mark in the third period.

Notre Dame’s power play went 1-1 on Landon Slaggert’s power-play strike and the Irish penalty kill held Minnesota’s power play to a 0-for-2 mark.

How It Happened
Notre Dame killed off the game’s first power play midway through the first period with Bischel turning aside the only Gopher shot on goal he faced on the penalty kill.

Jackson Lacombe scored at 16:50 of the first period when his wrist shot from the top of the near circle beat Bischel high to put Minnesota on top, 1-0.

The Irish answered to tie it at 1-1 with 32 seconds remaining in the first period. Following a Gopher icing, Graham Slaggert won an offensive zone faceoff by sliding the puck to his right wing, where Alex Steeves slammed home his sixth goal of the season.

The Gophers scored off a faceoff win of their own at 1:48 of the second period to take a 2-1 lead on Sampo Ranta’s ninth goal of the season.

After killing off a Minnesota power play, the Irish went to work on their first power-play chance of the night, with Landon Slaggert capitalizing from in close as he finished off a feed from Graham Slaggert at 6:23. Nick Leivermann got the chance started as he moved in from the point and found Graham Slaggert cutting in down the near boards to earn the second assist. It marked Landon’s third goal in the last three games since returning from the World Junior Championship.

Leivermann had a nice rush near the end of the period but his shot rang off the post with 1:21 left in the middle frame and the teams headed to the locker room tied at 2-2.

The Irish dominated possession in the first half of the third period, outshooting the Gophers 9-1 in the first 10 minutes, but Lafontaine kept the game tied.

Notre Dame took the lead with 4:43 to play when Landon Slaggert forced a turnover on the forecheck behind the Gopher net and put the puck in front for Graham Slaggert, who buried it past LaFontaine for his third point of the night.

The Gophers pulled LaFontaine for the extra attacker in the closing moments, but Bischel and the Irish held on for the 3-2 victory.

Landon Slaggert Makes U.S. World Junior Championship Camp Roster

Landon Slaggert could have something other than Notre Dame on his mind for most of December.

Landon Slaggert could have something other than Notre Dame on his mind for most of December. The Irish’s freshman forward has been named to the U.S. roster for the camp in preparation for the World Junior Championship. The camp begins Dec. 6, and the roster will have 25 names for the tournament, which runs from Christmas Day to Jan. 5 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Slaggert, a South Bend native, recorded the first point of his collegiate career in the Irish’s 3-2 win over No. 3 Michigan on Friday. He and his brother, Graham, both had assists on Nate Clurman’s goal. He has played in all four of the Irish’s games played thus far.

Notre Dame has sent 22 players to the World Junior Championship previously. Last year, Spencer Stastney and Jake Pivonka became the most recent Irish players to take part. Irish medalists in this tournament over the years are Andrew Peeke, Anders Bjork, Mario Lucia, Kyle Palmieri, Kyle Lawson and Ben Simon.

Notre Dame Freshman Forwards Hoping for 2020 NHL Draft Selections

Tuesday and Wednesday will mark the achievement of a lifelong dream for many young hockey players. That dream is to be drafted by the NHL.

Tuesday and Wednesday will mark the achievement of a lifelong dream for many young hockey players. That dream is to be drafted by the NHL. This year’s draft could feature two Notre Dame freshman forwards. Landon Slaggert and Ryder Rolston are ranked 88th and 102nd, respectively, in the final North American Prospect Rankings.

Though neither player has appeared in a game for the Irish yet, hockey is rich in both of their families. Slaggert continues a Notre Dame tradition in his family, as his brother, Graham, is entering his junior season with the Irish, and his father, Andy, is an associate head coach who is in his 28th season with the program. Rolston’s father, Brian, began his 17-year NHL career by winning the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1995, which came after winning the 1992 national championship with Lake Superior State under Jeff Jackson.

Six drafted players currently are on Notre Dame’s roster. The all-time drafted player total for the Irish is 85. At least one current or former Irish player has been selected in the draft every year since 2004.
