Marshawn Lynch previewed the Seattle Kraken’s Winter Classic jersey and hilariously did not want to give it back

Marshawn Lynch is forever a national treasure.

Marshawn Lynch must be protected at all costs.

A few years back, Lynch gave us one of the best mic’d up moments that TV has ever offered (in my totally biased opinion) when cameras caught him in a wholesome exchange with Richard Sherman about giving out turkeys during Thanksgiving. “Trying to restore my community!” Perfection.

The legend is back as the Seattle Kraken enlisted Lynch’s help in promoting their new Winter Classic jersey. There’s just one catch.

The team let him preview the gear but pranked him by throwing his old playing number on it, telling him it was one-of-a-kind and insinuating that it was for promotional purposes only.

In true Marshawn fashion, he hilariously gave them absolute grief over it.

The Golden Knights and Kraken unveiled their unique Winter Classic jerseys and NHL fans had thoughts

Do you like the Golden Knights and Kraken’s Winter Classic looks?

The NHL Winter Classic is a long-standing tradition in hockey and we finally have our first look at what the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken will be wearing for the occasion.

We’ve known for some time that the reigning Stanley Cup champions and the NHL’s 32nd team will compete outdoors on New Year’s Day at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. As of Wednesday, we now know what the jersey matchup will look like between the Golden Knights and Kraken. And folks, they’re certainly unique!

The Kraken’s jersey for the Winter Classic goes back to the city’s roots in hockey with an updated version of the Seattle Metropolitans jerseys from the 1910s. The Metropolitans actually hold an interesting record as being the first United States team to win the Stanley Cup! The Golden Knights, meanwhile, went for a stylized “V” on the front with a more muted gold for their Winter Classic sweaters.

Definitely not the worst Winter Classic jersey matchup I’ve ever seen, but the Kraken for sure hold the edge here thanks to bringing back an iconic vintage look from their history.

NHL fans, of course, took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the Kraken and Golden Knights’ Winter Classic jerseys.

How the Seattle Kraken amazingly became BookTok’s favorite NHL team

The relationship we didn’t know we needed this postseason.

To say the Seattle Kraken have a devoted fan base is an understatement, but the NHL’s newest team is getting more attention than usual right now thanks to a… community of hardcore fans on TikTok?

As the Kraken prepare to square off against the Dallas Stars for a Game-7 winner-moves-on matchup Monday night, it’s hard to ignore the immaculate vibes they’re bringing to their first-ever playoff series. It’s even harder to ignore the sudden influx of support from a group of TikTok users who are showing sudden interest in the team, and the sport itself, due to the popularity of steamy, hockey-centric romance fiction. Yes, that is a real sentence.

So how did this happen? Let’s break it all down:

Kraken upset Avalanche, Seattle sports continues to dominate Denver

The Seattle/Denver rivalry is more than a little one-sided right now

On Sunday night one of the biggest upsets in the NHL happened in the Mile High City of Denver. The Seattle Kraken, in their second year of existence, knocked off the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche on their home ice. As heavy underdogs, the Kraken were widely expected to be dealt with in short order by Colorado. Instead, the Avalanche were pushed to 7 games and lost to Seattle.

This continues a recent trend in sports where the Emerald City continues to absolutely dominate Denver in all sports. Of course, the first and biggest example has to be the Seattle Seahawks’ complete annihilation of Peyton Manning’s record-setting Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. The greatest single season offense in NFL history was held to eight measly points after three full quarters in a 43-8 embarrassment.

Next up is the entirety of the Russell Wilson trade. Seattle traded their franchise quarterback to Denver and despite early positive buzz for the Broncos, it quickly unraveled into one of the most lopsided trades ever. The Seahawks upset Denver on Monday Night Football in Wilson’s return to Seattle 17-16, and it was all downhill from there. The Broncos had one of the most abysmal seasons in franchise history, while the Seahawks returned to the playoffs.

With the 2023 NFL draft complete, the final details of the Russell Wilson trade are finally wrapped up. When looking at the full list, Seattle got quite a haul.

Not to be outdone by the Seahawks and Kraken, the Mariners got in on the action as well. Earlier this season, the M’s swept the Colorado Rockies in a three game series in Seattle.

I think it’s safe to say the fans in Denver will be happy to have a few months without facing Seattle teams.

Seattle: Playoffs Town, USA

The Emerald City could send four teams to the playoffs this year

The Seattle Seahawks may have been bounced from the NFL playoffs early, and while their recent history in the postseason isn’t stellar, there is still plenty for Seattle fans to be excited about when it comes to all their teams. Right now the Emerald City might be in the midst of a true sports renaissance.

For the first time in history, the Seattle Seahawks and Mariners qualified for the postseason in the same year. Earlier in the summer, Seattle’s WNBA team the Storm made yet another routine trip to the playoffs. While the Sounders of the MLS did not make their 14th consecutive appearance, Seattle may still send a fourth team to the the postseason.

In the world of hockey, the Seattle Kraken are among the best teams in the NHL. As it stands, they hold a narrow lead for first place in the Pacific Division over the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Should the Kraken finish strong, they would be the fourth professional Seattle team to qualify for the playoffs this season.

If that’s the case, it will be the most professional teams the City of Seattle has sent to each sport’s respective postseasons since 2018. That year, the Seahawks, Sounders, and Storm all made the playoffs, along with the Seawolves of Major League Rugby and the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League – the last year they were in Seattle.

NHL fans had so many jokes about the absurd Kraken-Kings game that ended 9-8

What a game!

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you.

An NHL game ended with 17 goals. The Seattle Kraken took down the Los Angeles Kings … 9-8! IN OVERTIME!

That’s as nutty as you’d think. There were all kinds of ties and lead changes and goalies getting peppered and so much more.

It certainly wasn’t the first time that many total goals were scored. Per ESPN, “It was the sixth game in the expansion era (since 1967-68) to feature at least 17 goals and be decided by one goal and just the second since 1984-85.”

Still, there were so many jokes, facts and tweets about it that we had to round them up:

Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2022-23 season

Which familiar name is your favorite?

The weather has gotten cooler, which means it soon will be cold. That means it’s time for the 2022-23 NHL season to begin. As usual, Notre Dame has plenty of representation in the league. Amazingly, not only do the Irish have the same number of former players from the beginning of last season (10), but the same players themselves.

Maybe it’s boring to some people to not see any new Irish players begin the season in the NHL, but 17 will start in the AHL, so you have that to possibly look forward to. Until then, here are the familiar 10 names:

The Seattle Kraken’s new unsettling troll mascot Buoy has confused hockey fans

A troll? Really Seattle?

The Seattle Kraken officially have a mascot and it was certainly not the one hockey fans were expecting.

On Saturday, during the team’s preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks, the Kraken announced their newest mascot Buoy, a sea troll inspired by a Seattle landmark, the Fremont Troll. The news came as a surprise to many, not just because the Kraken are only in their second year as a franchise, but also because the team’s mascot isn’t a sea creature of some kind.

Instead of an octopus-type creature or some other seafaring animal or myth, the Kraken went with a blue haired troll — with an anchor earring! — straight out of the Trolls doll collection from the 1990s.

Here’s how Buoy was announced to Seattle fans, with quite the entrance from the rafters too.

I’m willing to give Buoy a chance here, because he’s not even a day old, but it does feel really disappointing the Kraken couldn’t keep up their run of excellent branding to create a mascot more unique than this. But hey, at least Buoy is having fun with hockey fans on Twitter already.

It seems like it’s going to take some time for NHL fans to warm up to Buoy.

Former Seahawk Marshawn Lynch joins Seattle Kraken investor group

Former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch has joined the Seattle Kraken hockey team’s investor group alongside Macklemore.

Marshawn Lynch is back in Seattle but not as a Seahawk. On Monday morning, the Seattle Kraken announced the former Seahawks running back, along with Grammy award-winning rapper Macklemore, had joined the hockey team’s investor group.

In perfect Beastmode form, video footage surfaced featuring Lynch riding a Zamboni at the Kraken Community Iceplex.

While the antics on the Zamboni were entertaining enough, nothing beats the statement Lynch provided in the official press release.

On God, I’ve been a part of a lot of things, but this is something I never would have imagined. As a young hyena I always dreamed of playing on a professional team but owning one is something special.

As I look back on some of my accomplishments – I retired before I was 30 and now being an owner of a professional club at the age of 35 – I’m gonna continue to count my blessings. Being a part of the Seattle Kraken is something big for me.

It gives me another chance to get a ring after helping bring the first NFL one to the city. And if you thought I was goin’ somewhere, nah Seattle, I’m here! Stand up!!!!

According to the team, in his role as an investor, Lynch will participate in the Kraken’s “Hockey is for Everyone” campaign and work with the club in planning events for young people as well as community activism.

Lynch also indicated he wasn’t afraid to step on the ice himself . . .  perhaps a little something for Seattle fans to look forward to.

Marshawn Lynch drove doughnuts on a Zamboni to celebrate becoming a Seattle Kraken part owner

Marshawn is doing that hockey

Marshawn Lynch is on a mission to have as much fun in retirement as he did during his NFL career and boy is he succeeding.

From landing roles in Netflix shows and upcoming movies to investing in his own cannabis company, Lynch did not go quietly into the night. Now he’s back in the Seattle pro sports scene as a part owner of the NHL’s Kraken and the way Beast Mode celebrated his new role was entirely predictable.

After donning a Seattle jersey and cap, Lynch bolted straight for the Zamboni at the club’s practice rink and got back to his wild, cart driving ways.

We wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Kraken are -117 on the moneyline Monday night against the Ottawa Senators at Tipico. A boost from Beast Mode might be exactly the edge bettors are looking for. Regardless, any time Lynch shows up at Climate Pledge Arena, it’s sure to be entertaining.

Welcome to the NHL, Marshawn. Hopefully you find the names a bit easier to pronounce now.
