Chicago Blackhawks sign Notre Dame captain Landon Slaggert to contract

Good luck, Landon!

With Notre Dame’s season officially over, captain [autotag]Landon Slaggert[/autotag] finally can turn professional. He wasted no time as one day after the Irish’s season ended, he signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him in the third round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

This past season, Slaggert set collegiate career highs of 31 points and 20 goals as he played 36 games. Over 136 games with the Irish, he scored 92 points, including 47 goals.

[autotag]Carter Slaggert[/autotag], Landon’s brother, just finished his first season with the Irish, scoring seven points over 32 games. He’ll be the second of his brothers to turn pro after former Irish captain [autotag]Graham Slaggert[/autotag], who has played this season with the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

Thanks to Landon for his years of service to the Irish, and it’s great that the Slaggert family will continue to be part of the program for a little longer. In the meantime, good luck to Landon in the pros.

Two Notre Dame players nominated for college hockey’s top award

Think either of them have a chance?

Since the Hobey Baker Award first was awarded in 1981, no Notre Dame has won it. That’s a big deal because it means the Irish never have had the player considered the best in college hockey over that period of time. Two players have a chance to put the Irish on the board though after this year’s ballot was released.

The two Irish players who have been nominated for hockey’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy are goaltender [autotag]Ryan Bischel[/autotag] and forward [autotag]Landon Slaggert[/autotag]. Bischel has a 13-11-2 record with a 2.41 GAA, a .928 save percentage and three shutouts. Slaggert leads the Irish with 25 points and already has a career-high 16 goals.

Fans with registered accounts on the award’s website can vote for the winner through March 10. While only 1% of the fan vote will account for the final ballot, it still gives fans their chance to have their voices heard. Hopefully, they feel strongly enough about at least one of the Irish’s nominees.

Notre Dame beats Ohio State soundly

Impressive showing Friday night…

Notre Dame came within inches of knocking off Ohio State in late-September when the Buckeyes scored with just one second remaining to snatch a victory away from the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame hasn’t beat Ohio State in football since a 7-2 victory over the Buckeyes way back in 1937.  The Buckeyes have won each of the six meetings since.

At least in football, anyway.

Friday night saw the Notre Dame hockey team play host to Big Ten rival, 19th ranked Ohio State.  Things couldn’t have gone better for the Irish this time as they beat the Buckeyes 4-0.

Check out highlights from the victory below.

Landon Slaggert U.S. alternate captain for world junior championships

Nice honor.

[autotag]Landon Slaggert[/autotag] has another chance to do this country proud. Before the forward came to Notre Dame, he was a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program. Since then, he has been a reliable selection for the world junior championships. Now, he gets to serve as alternate captain for the U.S. at this year’s event, which will begin Tuesday in Edmonton, Alberta.

Slaggert, a South Bend native and 2020 third-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, won the gold with the U.S. in 2021 despite not recording a point in seven games, although he did have 12 penalty minutes. [autotag]Andrew Peeke[/autotag] previously was the last Irish player to medal at the event in 2018, during which he won a bronze.

In 65 games over two seasons with the Irish, Slaggert has scored 48 points, 20 of which have come on goals. His 26 points during the 2021-22 season, which included 12 goals, netted him an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection.

Notre Dame’s Spencer Stastney is Big Ten Third Star of the Week

Congratulations, Spencer!

After Notre Dame earned a weekend split against Minnesota, one of its players has been rewarded. Defenseman Spencer Stastney is the latest Big Ten Third Star of the Week. This is the second consecutive week an Irish player has earned that honor after Ryder Rolston won it last week. Stastney was honored alongside goaltenders Erik Portillo of Michigan and Jakub Dobes of Ohio State.

Stastney, who was an honorable mention on the preseason All-Big Ten Team, led the Irish with three assists in the two games against the Gophers. One of those assists helped Landon Slaggert score the game-winner in overtime of the second game. That increased his team-leading total in that category to 15.

This is the first time Stastney has been named a Big Ten star. In addition to this, he and Irish teammate Graham Slaggert are candidates for this year’s Senior CLASS Award, which is given to a senior or graduate student who excels in competition, character, community and classroom.

Notre Dame’s Landon Slaggert invited to U.S. junior camp again

The Irish might have national representation soon.

Only 19 years old, Notre Dame forward Landon Slaggert already has plenty of experience with Team USA. Before coming to the Irish, the South Bend native played with both the under-17 and under-18 teams. Now, Slaggert is getting his second straight crack at competing for the U.S. in the upcoming world junior championship. The camp will determine the U.S. roster, which will then attempt to defend the gold medal won at last year’s championship.

Slaggert was part of last year’s gold-medal winning team, and he played in all seven games involving the U.S., though he failed to register a point. This season, Slaggert has four goals and assists apiece in 13 games during his sophomore season for the Irish. While making the national team would force him to miss a couple of games with his collegiate team, he would become the seventh player in program history to compete in the world junior championship twice. The event runs from December 26 to January 5 in Alberta.

Notre Dame hockey: Two Irish stars invited to Team USA’s World Junior Summer Showcase

A big-time accomplishment for a couple of Notre Dame hockey stars

The following press release is courtesy of Notre Dame Athletics:

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame hockey players Landon Slaggert and Sasha Pastujov have been invited to Team USA’s 2021 World Junior Summer Showcase, USA Hockey announced on Monday (June 28).

The showcase is set for July 24-31 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan and will serve as an evaluation for athletes seeking to make their respective national teams for the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2021 through Jan. 5, 2022 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta. With Team USA divided into two squads and Finland and Sweden also taking part, the Showcase will include 11 games over eight days.

Slaggert, who will be playing his sophomore season in 2021-22, and Pastujov, who joins the Irish for his freshman season, are two of the 24 forwards who have been invited to the event.

Last season, Slaggert was part of a Team USA team that claimed the gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship (Jan. 6) and he became the seventh Fighting Irish player to medal at the prestigious event. He is one of five returning players invited to this summer’s event.

Notre Dame Dominates Ohio State in Weekend Series Opener

Notre Dame had an opportunity to get back to .500 with Friday’s series opener at Ohio State. It did so with authority.

Notre Dame had an opportunity to get back to .500 with Friday’s series opener at Ohio State. It did so with authority. After a start that made some Notre Dame fans nervous, the Irish let them know in no uncertain terms that this was their game. Their 6-1 win represented the most times the Buckeyes have been scored upon this season.

Although it took about half the first period for the Irish (9-9-1, 7-7-1) to even record their first shot on goal, they drew first blood on a Spencer Stastney goal from the left faceoff circle. A couple of minutes later, Nate Clurman was whistled for checking from behind and, after a review, received a game misconduct. With plenty of time still on the five-minute Buckeyes power play, Landon Slaggert was sent to the box for hooking, forcing the Irish to skate two men down. Incredibly, the Irish’s penalty kill, helped by some nice saves from Dylan St. Cyr, got the job done and kept Ohio State (5-13-1, 5-12-0) off the scoreboard that entire time.

With momentum on their side, the Irish seized control in the second period, outshooting the Buckeyes, 18-5. They most of it by getting goals from Matt and Alex Steeves, Jesse Lansdell and Landon Slaggert, who scored 25 seconds into a power play. Nick Leivermann added a goal in the third, but all action was a formality at that point.

Alex Steeves was the Irish’s best player with three assists to go with his second-period tally. Graham Slaggert picked up two assists, and Lansdell and Leivermann also got into the assists column. St. Cyr stopped 23 of 24 shots for his sixth win of the season.

Landon Slaggert Wins Gold With Team USA at World Junior Championship

Landon Slaggert is in the middle of his first season at Notre Dame, and it’s already been memorable.

Landon Slaggert is in the middle of his first season at Notre Dame, and it’s already been memorable. As thrilling as skating for the Irish is, his greatest success this season has not come in South Bend. That’s come with Team USA, which won gold at this year’s World Junior Championship. The last Notre Dame player to medal in this event was Andrew Peeke, who helped the U.S. earn a bronze in 2018.

Slaggert, a South Bend native and recent Chicago Blackhawks draftee, did not score any points in seven games for the U.S., but he attained 12 penalty minutes. With the Irish, he has one goal and two assists through six games. That’s a far cry from the six goals apiece he scored in his last two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. Perhaps his most recent experience will allow him to finish his freshman season in a big way.

Landon Slaggert Makes U.S. World Junior Championship Camp Roster

Landon Slaggert could have something other than Notre Dame on his mind for most of December.

Landon Slaggert could have something other than Notre Dame on his mind for most of December. The Irish’s freshman forward has been named to the U.S. roster for the camp in preparation for the World Junior Championship. The camp begins Dec. 6, and the roster will have 25 names for the tournament, which runs from Christmas Day to Jan. 5 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Slaggert, a South Bend native, recorded the first point of his collegiate career in the Irish’s 3-2 win over No. 3 Michigan on Friday. He and his brother, Graham, both had assists on Nate Clurman’s goal. He has played in all four of the Irish’s games played thus far.

Notre Dame has sent 22 players to the World Junior Championship previously. Last year, Spencer Stastney and Jake Pivonka became the most recent Irish players to take part. Irish medalists in this tournament over the years are Andrew Peeke, Anders Bjork, Mario Lucia, Kyle Palmieri, Kyle Lawson and Ben Simon.
