Watch: Jake Evans’ game-winning goal in 2018 Frozen Four

Remember this?

Not long ago, Notre Dame was a regular contender for national championships. Perhaps that’s why quite a few NHL players today once played in South Bend. Among those is [autotag]Jake Evans[/autotag], who has done pretty well for himself with the Montreal Canadiens. But whatever he does the rest of his career, few feelings will compare to the game-winning goal in the 2018 Frozen Four against Michigan:

As of this writing, it’s been six years and one day since Evans etched himself into Irish lore forever. The Irish ended up losing to Minnesota-Duluth in the national championship game, but Evans contributed to the Irish’s cause in that game with the secondary assist on their lone goal by [autotag]Andrew Oglevie[/autotag].

Perhaps someday, there will be a moment that surpasses this one and ends with the Irish as the last team standing. For the moment though, there is an established precedent that they can get as close as possible without actually winning it all. Most programs would take that in a heartbeat.

The Rangers and Devils started an all-out line brawl the second the puck dropped, resulting in 8 ejections

Boy, that escalated quickly.

Well, the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils proved on Wednesday night that they really do not like each other.

Right as the puck dropped at Madison Square Garden for the late-season battle, the gloves came off as a five-on-five line brawl erupted on the ice.

Literally, all of the Rangers and Devils players just started going at it in a fight. The second the puck hit the ice, absolute mayhem broke loose.

It got so bad that this opening brouhaha sparked eight ejections and an actual shouting match between Rangers coach Peter Laviolette and Devils interim coach Travis Green.

Fighting is a part of hockey, but whatever in the world sparked this had to run deeper than a typical scrap between two players. This got ugly fast.

The fighting didn’t even stop after that bizarre opening brawl.

In the first five minutes of the game, a whopping 25 different penalties were assessed between both teams, per SPDN Sports’ Drew Livingstone.

NHL.com’s Dan Rosen noted before the game that both teams started their fourth lines, so something had to be up before this even started.

Maybe this is just part of an intense rivalry, but getting into a fight like this literally at the point of puck drop just doesn’t happen every day.

Perhaps it has something to do with the last time these two teams played on March 11, a game where Rangers forward Matt Rempe earned a four-game suspension for elbowing Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler and giving him a concussion.

Justin Thomas tried to chug a beer at a New York Rangers game and it didn’t go well

A for effort, D for execution.

The late, great Toby Keith has a song that goes, “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once, as I ever was,” and it’s a thought that many of us in our 30s have when we try and do things that came naturally in our 20s.

I can only imagine a similar thought was going through the head of Justin Thomas on Tuesday night. The two-time major champion is having himself a week in the Big Apple. On Monday Thomas was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and attended a New York Knicks game. On Tuesday he went to a New York Rangers game and was put on the jumbotron.

As one does when holding a beer in front of tens of thousands of fans, Thomas attempted to down his drink in one swig (keyword attempted). The 15-time PGA Tour winner was off to a great start before he ended up wearing the last third of his beer on his shirt.

A for effort, D for execution.

Chicago Blackhawks sign Notre Dame captain Landon Slaggert to contract

Good luck, Landon!

With Notre Dame’s season officially over, captain [autotag]Landon Slaggert[/autotag] finally can turn professional. He wasted no time as one day after the Irish’s season ended, he signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him in the third round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

This past season, Slaggert set collegiate career highs of 31 points and 20 goals as he played 36 games. Over 136 games with the Irish, he scored 92 points, including 47 goals.

[autotag]Carter Slaggert[/autotag], Landon’s brother, just finished his first season with the Irish, scoring seven points over 32 games. He’ll be the second of his brothers to turn pro after former Irish captain [autotag]Graham Slaggert[/autotag], who has played this season with the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

Thanks to Landon for his years of service to the Irish, and it’s great that the Slaggert family will continue to be part of the program for a little longer. In the meantime, good luck to Landon in the pros.

WATCH: Wisconsin football legend giving an NHL career a shot?

WATCH: Wisconsin football legend giving an NHL career a shot

Wisconsin legend J.J. Watt is still making news.

First, the current CBS analyst went viral after debuting a new hairstyle during the Super Bowl broadcast. Next, he re-entered the discussion after showing off his David Spade-like hair, which got Spade himself to chime in.

Now, he might be trying for a new career in the NHL.

The Wisconsin legend and future NFL Hall of Famer was on the ice at Arizona State and the Arizona Coyotes’ Mullett Arena, in his words ‘knocking off the rust.’

If anyone doesn’t have experience trying to skate while hitting a tiny, fast-moving, saucer-shaped object at the same time, it isn’t as easy as Watt makes it look.

But I’ll chalk this up to his Wisconsin upbringing, where playing hockey on frozen ponds is somewhat of a prerequisite. After all, he did play hockey at a somewhat high level from age four to 13.

This obviously won’t be close to an NHL level. But still, it’s an impressive showing.

5 incredible Yaroslav Askarov saves from the Admirals’ stunning 18-game AHL win streak

The Milwaukee Admirals are tearing up the AHL, and stellar goalie Yaroslav Askarov is a big reason why.

The Milwaukee Admirals have been the best story in hockey this season you might not be aware of, as the Nashville Predators’ AHL affiliate has won 18-straight games, the second-best ever streak in the league.

Part of that incredible run has been fueled by young goalie Yaroslav Askarov, who has been playing some of the best hockey of anyone in either the NHL or AHL as of late. He’s stood firm for five shutout wins since Jan. 5.

With rumors flying about the Predators possibly trading goalie Juuse Saros, Askarov could be the next star goalie once the Preds call him up permanently from Milwaukee to man the pipes in Smashville.

Check out some of Askarov’s stellar highlights during this impressive Admirals win streak and get excited about when he brings his acrobatic, stuntman-ready goalie work to the big leagues on a full-time basis.

Really, these highlights are stunners. We’re so excited for Askarov’s future NHL days.

Notre Dame on list of fan bases that don’t care for college basketball

Do you care for Irish hoops?

It’s no secret the past couple of years have been rough for Notre Dame basketball fans. The Irish vastly underachieved last year, and a new roster and coaching staff this year meant the program had to start from scratch. That doesn’t exactly draw interest from fans.

Whatever the reason though, Irish fans simply don’t care about college basketball. At least that’s the opinion of Big Game Boomer, a college list aficionado on social media who decided to include Notre Dame among a group of college fan bases that allegedly could care less about college hoops:

First of all, Irish basketball fans haven’t had much to cheer about over the past few years. Secondly, while football rules supreme at Notre Dame and always will, that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t care about the second-most popular sport at the college level. Finally, Purcell Pavilion is about two-thirds full for an average game just as it was a year ago.

It really makes you wonder what criteria Big Game Boomer used to create this list. Then again, maybe this shouldn’t be taken seriously. After all, this is the same person who thinks MLB, the NFL and, yes, the NHL all need teams in Honolulu.

Whatever. Irish fans will support the basketball team in droves when it’s really good again. We just need to be patient. The time will come.
