The Flyers’ playoff clinching scenario for Tuesday is absolutely bonkers and involves a lot of luck

This is NUTS.

Buckle up, hockey fans. You’re going to want to tune into the Philadelphia Flyers’ final game of the regular season against the Washington Capitals, because the only way for the Flyers to make the playoffs as an East Wild Card is … nuts.

There’s one Wild Card spot left in the conference, with the Flyers behind the Caps, Red Wings and Penguins.

For the Capitals, a win would be huge. The Red Wings need to win and the Capitals need to lose. The Penguins need to root for the Wings and Capitals to lose to have a shot.

And the Flyers? Watch this:

  1. They need to win against the Capitals but ONLY in regulation.
  2. The Red Wings and Penguins ALSO need to lose in regulation to give the Capitals, Wings and Flyers 89 points.
  3. If that all happens, Washington and Philadelphia would be tied in regulation wins, regulation + overtime wins and wins overall.
  4. The next tiebreaker would be head-to-head points, and the win would get them the edge over the Caps.

So you might get this situation:

WHEW!

Owen Tippett’s ridiculous spin-o-rama tally for Flyers should be the NHL’s goal of the year

This was BONKERS!

Move over Connor McDavid and Connor Bedard, Owen Tippett has submitted his case for NHL goal of the season after an absolutely bonkers spin-o-rama tally.

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers bested the Dallas Stars 5-1 en route to their fifth victory in a row. The Flyers had the Stars’ number from the start, as Philadelphia jumped out to a lead in the first period and never looked back. A big reason for that was due to Tippett, who scored two goals in the Flyers’ five-goal victory, but none more so bigger than this one.

With the Flyers up 4-1 in the third, Tippett put the game away for Philadelphia with a ridiculous spin-o-rama move, firing the puck off his backhand and beating goaltender Jake Oettinger with a beauty of a shot.

What a move and what a goal! We’ll be seeing that on highlight reels all season long, that’s for sure.

Everything we know about the Philadelphia Flyers’ sudden trade of top prospect Cutter Gauthier

Here’s everything we know about the Flyers’ shocking trade of Cutter Gauthier to the Ducks and all the drama surrounding the move.

Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. Are you wondering why the hockey world has exploded with talk about the Philadelphia Flyers and someone named Cutter Gauthier? Don’t worry. We’re here to help.

It’s not often hockey teams trade away top prospects on a random weekday, even more so in the middle of the season. But that’s exactly what happened on Monday when the Philadelphia Flyers traded 19-year-old Cutter Gauthier to the Anaheim Ducks in a stunning move.

If you’re not up to date on the Flyers’ prospect system or who Gauthier even is, we here at For The Win will give you everything you need to know about this trade that rocked the hockey world.

Hockey fans loved the Flyers adding a special 9-year-old ‘enforcer’ to their bench

It’s dusty in here.

The Philadelphia Flyers absolutely nailed this fan engagement moment, and it’s just so darn wholesome.

On Tuesday, cameras spotted a new edition on the bench when the Flyers took on the Carolina Hurricanes. Owen, a nine-year-old hockey fan and captain of his local youth hockey team, was the team’s special honoree for the night.

Treating fans to special moments isn’t new to sports. But Owen’s story is one of so much resilience and courage that making him a bench enforcer was likely a no-brainer for Philadelphia. Extraordinary fans call for exceptional moments.

This extremely kind and heart-warming gesture hit hockey fans right in their feelings.

The Flyers made embarrassing NHL history with loss to the winless Sharks

The Flyers are panacea for completely broken hockey teams.

If you’re a Philadelphia Flyers fan, this should be a familiar feeling.

On Tuesday, the Flyers lost 2-1 to the winless San Jose Sharks, breaking a 17-game losing streak dating back to last season. While bettors were surprised by the outcome — which gave the Sharks their first win of the season after back-to-back games allowing 10 goals — embarrassing themselves is nothing new for the Flyers.

Since Philadelphia bowed out of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final, the last decade-plus of Flyers hockey has been dotted with humiliating moments. Between big losses and incompetent front office management to trading for noted bigot Tony DeAngelo and allowing Ivan Provorov to decline wearing a Pride Jersey during warmups, the Flyers haven’t given fans a lot to feel good about in recent years.

And now, the Flyers will be immortalized in the NHL record books for their mortifying loss to the Sharks. With Tuesday’s defeat, the Flyers have now become the only team in NHL history to lose twice to a team that went winless in 10-plus games to begin a season. The first time the Flyers lost to a winless team? The 2017-18 season, where they lost to the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 in overtime to give the team its first win of the season.

It’s rough to allow that to happen once, but twice? That’s Flyers hockey, baby!

The Flyers also are used to helping other teams snap long losing streaks, as Philadelphia helped the Buffalo Sabres break their 18-game winless streak back in 2021.

This new low should not come as a surprise for Flyers fans. Anyone expecting the Flyers to pull out a victory against the winless Sharks hasn’t been paying attention to this team’s embarrassing track record over the last decade.

Gritty dancing with the famous Philadelphia emotional support alligator is oddly satisfying

This is a 10-out-of-10 production. Five stars. Highly recommend.

Gritty dancing with an emotional support alligator is the crossover we never knew we needed.

In September, a Philadephia Phillies fan tried to bring his emotional support alligator to a Phillies-Pirates game. There’s not exactly a dedicated space for alligators, but the fan figured he would bring Wally Gator, as he’s appropriately named, anyway.

Citizens Bank Park said absolutely not and sent the fan and his gator friend home. But, by gosh, all is not lost.

The same courageous fan showed up at a Philadelphia Flyers game recently, and things quickly got out of hand in the best way possible.

A video posted by Haley Simon of 97.5 The Fanatic shows Gritty hilariously dancing (and swirling?) beside the animal in a collaboration I did not expect to enjoy so much. Wally Gator looks completely unamused, but Gritty is loving it.

This is a 10-out-of-10 production. Five stars. Highly recommend.

The creepy ventriloquist dummy from Goosebumps tried to scare Flyers coach John Tortorella behind the bench

WATCH OUT, TORTS!

If you’re in the team box at an NHL game, you might want to look behind you every now and again for who might be lurking behind the glass.

For the Philadelphia Flyers’ Thursday night tilt against the Minnesota Wild, Slappy the evil ventriloquist dummy from the new Disney+ adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books showed up for some Halloween haunts.

Slappy got great seats for the Flyers’ game against the Wild, and he got a prime opportunity to give Philadelphia head coach John Tortorella a really good scare as he lingered right behind Torts as he was coaching.

It was great to hear the ESPN broadcast yell for Tortorella not to turn around with Slappy right behind him.

Hey, at least Gritty wasn’t afraid to welcome Slappy to the City of Brotherly Love.

Well, being that it’s prime spooky season, Slappy was right where he belonged at the Flyers game.

Maybe he and Gritty went trick-or-treating at the period breaks?

NHL fans think the Flyers’ new jerseys look… like the old ones

These new uniforms look like they did in the 1990s, but fans still liked them.

The Philadelphia Flyers are bringing back the 1990s in a big way.

The franchise revealed some new jerseys on Tuesday, and they should look familiar: The organization took elements from past Flyers unis, with the stripes and the “burnt orange” color we all remember so well from a few decades ago. But they are different in some ways, especially the white version with orange striping on it, which is my favorite.

They seemed to get approval from all over the NHL world, even with the look seeming to be similar to that of what you see above. Here’s a roundup of tweets:

Ivan Provorov trade: Who won the Blue Jackets, Kings and Flyers deal?

Ivan Provorov has been dealt to the Blue Jackets as part of a massive three-way trade.

The 2023 Stanley Cup Final may currently be ongoing, but the Philadelphia Flyers certainly made a splash with this massive offseason move.

On Tuesday, the Flyers traded defenseman Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets, with the Los Angeles Kings sliding in as the third partner in the deal. Provorov played the last seven seasons with the Flyers, often being utilized as the team’s No. 1 defenseman after being drafted No. 7 overall in the 2015 draft.

MORE NHL: Flyers’ Ivan Provorov declined to wear pregame Pride Night jerseys, citing religious beliefs.

While there has been a glut of front office hockey news over the last few weeks, this Provorov trade kicks the NHL offseason into high gear as the first major domino to fall. Let’s take a look at how each of the Blue Jackets, Flyers and Kings grade out in this massive Provorov trade.

Joe Biden threw shade at the Toronto Maple Leafs during Canadian Parliament address

President Biden got a playful dig in at the Toronto Maple Leafs while visiting Canada’s Parliament on Friday.

While addressing the Canadian Parliament on Friday, President Joe Biden threw a little shade at one of Canada’s most popular hockey teams.

After the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 6-2, in January, Biden jokingly revealed that he wasn’t over seeing his Flyers lose.

With the president and the first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, fans of Philadelphia sports, Biden couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at the polarizing NHL team for taking down the Flyers.

“I have to say, I like your teams, except the Leafs,” Biden told Canada’s Parliament. “I’ll tell you why. They beat the Flyers back in January, that’s why.”

Biden got a standing ovation from a good portion of the folks in the room, with a few jeers from Leafs fans thrown in for good measure.

Biden has long supported professional teams from Pennsylvania, the state he calls home. Even as he traveled up north, he couldn’t help but stir the pot within hockey fandom.

At the very least, we know Gritty the Flyers mascot would be proud to see the president defend the Philly hockey team.
