WATCH: Former Ohio State player Cole McWard scores in just second NHL game

Well, that didn’t take long! #GoBucks

The NHL does things a little differently than some of the other major sports we’ve been accustomed to watching. There is typically a very defined college season, and then a separate, turn-the-page, professional season after it’s all done during the next season.

However, in the NHL, players can finish their college season and jump right into action if they’ve been signed after waiting their turn to finish out their college careers.

Such was the case with Ohio State defenseman Cole McWard. He was signed by the Vancouver Canucks after the Buckeyes were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament and is already on the ice at the game’s highest level.

And wouldn’t you know it, just two games into his NHL career, McWard lit the lamp for his first-ever NHL goal over the weekend on a sharp wrister that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net.

Way to make an early mark Cole and make Buckeye Nation proud. Here’s to hoping this is just one of many goals and other highlights over a long NHL career.

Ohio State men’s hockey dominates Harvard, advances in NCAA Tournament

A big upset for the Buckeyes and they’ll move on in the NCAA Tournament. #GoBucks

Hardly anyone expected it, but the Ohio State men’s hockey team dominated  No. 2 seed Harvard, 8-1, in a Bridgeport regional on Friday afternoon for a first-round upset in the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes started from the drop of the puck, outshooting Harvard 17-3 in the first period and notching two goals after several high-quality chances throughout the first 20 minutes. Cam Thiesing got OSU on the board first with a nifty roof shot heading towards the goal just 3:22 into the contest.

Following an onslaught from the bigger and more physical Buckeye squad, and after several narrow misses, Ohio State made it 2-0 with just 1:36 left in the period when Cole McWard’s shot hit the skate of a Crimson defender and richocheted into the back of the net.

OSU would enter the break up by a couple of goals and seeminly in control of all aspects of the game.

Sometimes a reset at the break is all a team needs to regain itself, but that never happened for Harvard. Ohio State came out in the second period, and if anything, looked even better, scoring five goals in the period by creating turnovers in the neutral zone and punishing the smaller Harvard squad the entire distance of the ice.

Gustaf Westland, Cam Thiesing, Mason Lohrei, Joe Dunlap, and Cole McWard all lit the lamp in the period to put the game out of reach and the result no longer in doubt. The Buckeyes finished entered the second intermission with a commanding 7-0 lead.

Patrick Guzzo would give Ohio State one more goal in the third period, and Harvard finally got one into the back of the net on a power play with 3:10 remaining to cap the scoring.

With the win, the Buckeyes advance to the regional final against the winner of No. 1 seed Quinnipiac and No. 4 seed Merrimack. That game is set for Sunday.

Ohio State men’s hockey beats Penn State, advances to semifinals of Big Ten Tournament

On to the semifinals! #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s hockey team stared down an elimination game on Sunday and took care of business to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Hockey Tournament. The No. 3 seed Buckeyes beat No. 6 seed Penn State 3-1 and will now move on to the semifinals against No. 2 seed Michigan.

Oh, how fun.

Penn State actually started the scoring, but it took a while. The Nittany Lions drew first blood on the power play with 13:32 left in the second period to put the Buckeyes on their heels at 1-0.

OSU evened things not long after however. At the 7:52 mark of the period, Cam McWard lasered a one-timer from the slot into the back of the net. Stephen Halliday and Jake Wise were credited with the assists.

The Buckeyes would strike again to take the lead just a little over three minutes later on an odd-man rush when Scooter Brickey was able to roof one over the shoulder of Penn State goaltender Liam Souliere. Suddenly, Ohio State was in position to advance if it could just seal the deal on defense.

Penn State started the third period on the power play but couldn’t convert and things stayed that way with back-and-forth play until the Nittany Lions pulled the goalie to get an advantage late in the game. The OSU defense stood tall and the Buckeyes were able to tack on an empty net goal to finish off the 3-1 victory.

Ohio State will now head into the single-elimination rounds and travel to Ann Arbor to take on the ugliest color combination in all of college sports — maize and blue. That game is set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Ohio State hockey beats Penn State in Game 1 of Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal

One more and the Buckeyes advance! #GoBucks

There are a lot of Ohio State teams in tournament action this weekend, and one of them is the men’s hockey team. The Buckeyes made it into the Big Ten Hockey Tournament as the No. 3 seed and are hosting No. 6 seed Penn State in a best-of-three-game series for the right to advance to the semifinals.

Game One was Friday night at the Schottenstein Center, and so far so good. Ohio State made quick and easy work of the Nittany Lions, cruising to a 5-1 victory to put Penn State in a must-win situation Saturday.

The Buckeyes scored the first four goals of the contest starting with David Burnside finding the back of the net off of a nifty feed from Stephen Halliday just under five minutes into the contest.

There would be no more scoring in the first period, but Ohio State went on a three-goal scoring barrage in the second stanza. Tyler Duke started it during a 4-on-4 situation with 15:27 left in the period. Tate Singleton and Stephen Halliday assisted on the score.

Cam Theising scored just 44 seconds later on an assist from Mason Lohrei to make it 3-0.

Cole McWard would finish the scoring in the second period on a power play goal that was set up by Jake Wise and Stephen Halliday (once again) to make it 4-0.

Penn State would finally score on a power play with 9:00 left in the game before Stephen Halliday got a goal himself for his fourth point of the night for the final 5-1 score.

The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions will be back at it again on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. ET. A win and OSU moves on to the semifinals. A loss means a winner-take-all contest on Sunday.

Ohio State planning a new ice hockey facility

Would this make you go to more OSU hockey games? #GoBucks

Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith has seen a lot of new and upgraded facilities during his time running the show on the banks of the Olentangy. Ohio Stadium has undergone a renovation, the lacrosse program got its own facility, the multi-use Covelli Center was opened, and both player facilities for football and basketball got a facelift.

But the Ohio State Department of Athletics isn’t done putting on the lipstick and rouge. According to several reports, the program is now looking towards a new ice hockey facility for both the men’s and women’s programs.

According to the agenda for its meeting Thursday, the Ohio State Board of Trustees will propose a new ice rink off Fred Taylor Drive close to the Covelli Center. If approved, construction would begin in June 2024 with an opening slated for April 2026.

“We appreciate the Board of Trustees considering this proposal allowing us to hire an architect to plan this much-needed facility,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement. “We are looking forward to hiring a firm to help define program components and to design a state-of-the-art complex that will serve our student-athletes and fans.”

Currently, the OSU men play their home games in the cavernous Schottenstein Center and have done so since it opened in 1999. The women do their work in the OSU Ice Rink.

This news comes in the midst of what seems to be a continuing trend with the athletic department of getting some of those Olympic sports their own places to call home.

You’ll get no argument from us.

Michigan State hockey senior Jagger Joshua says Ohio State player used racial slurs towards him

Michigan State hockey’s Jagger Joshua says Ohio State player used racial slurs towards him

On Monday evening, Michigan State hockey senior Jagger Joshua released a statement on his Twitter where he claimed that an Ohio State player used a racial slur multiple times during MSU’s Nov. 11 match-up against the Buckeyes.

According to Joshua, the official in the game had heard the slur and issued a game misconduct penalty to the player. Nathaniel Bott of the Lansing State Journal noted that one Ohio State player, Kamil Sadlocha, received a game misconduct penalty at the 10:39 mark in the second period of the aforementioned game.

“The inaction has left me feeling confused and pessimistic about the movement of diversity within hockey culture,” Joshua said in his statement. “The ignorance of racism does not belong in our game, and I feel that I need to make people aware that this incident occurred. Because without acknowledgement, the problem gets worse.”

Joshua said that the Big Ten conducted an investigation about the incident but no further action has been taken by the conference.

“Michigan State Athletics stands with Jagger Joshua, and commends him for having the courage to speak up against racial injustice,” MSU Athletics Director Alan Haller said in a statement Monday evening. “As a department, we are committed to providing opportunities for all student-athletes to compete in a space free from discrimination, racism or hate.”

“At Michigan State, we are committed to a safe and welcoming space for our student-athletes,” MSU hockey coach Adam Nightingale said. “It is important to me that all student athletes feel comfortable and supported in our locker room and in our program. I am proud to have Jagger Joshua on our team.”

Ohio State men’s hockey set to play Michigan outdoors in Cleveland

The Buckeyes will hit the ice against the Wolverines at Cleveland’s First Energy Stadium! #GoBucks

With football season just around the corner, we got a bit of exciting hockey news. It was announced today that the Ohio State men’s hockey team will take on the  Michigan Wolverines in the “Faceoff On The Lake”. The matchup will take place in Cleveland on February 18, 2023, outdoors at First Energy Stadium, home of the Browns.

The NHL has been doing these types of games for several years now known as the Winter Classic. Some of those venues have included Soldier Field in Chicago, Target Field in Minneapolis, and Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend to name a few.

Now, we’ll be treated to collegiate hockey as the Buckeyes and Wolverines face off in the cold of winter outdoors. Last season OSU went 22-13-2 while Michigan had a record of 29-9-1. The maize and blue bested the Bucks in the 2021-2022 season with three wins to just one loss. Michigan also made it to the NCAA Frozen Four before bowing out to eventual champion Denver.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on September 7 if you’d like to see the action live. This will be the first time ever that First Energy Stadium has hosted a hockey game.

Ohio State women’s hockey wins National Championship

Ohio State women’s hockey wins National Championship #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes women’s hockey team is bringing home a National Championship trophy after defeating Minnesota Duluth 3-2. The game-winning score game from Kinzie Hauswirth with six minutes and 40-seconds left remaining in the contest and that shot etched her name in history as this marks the first National Championship in Ohio State women’s hockey history.

The Buckeyes finished the historic season with a 32-6 record and head coach Nadine Muzerall has transformed this women’s program into a national force, which isn’t surprising given her impressive resume. I don’t know much about hockey, but this program looks built to last under the guidance of Muzerall.

Seven Buckeyes taking place in the 2022 Winter Olympic games

Seven current and former Ohio State athletes are taking part in the winter Olympics.

It seems like we just got through with the Olympics, and that’s because well — we did, albeit the summer variety and not its winter cousin. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 summer games in Tokyo were postponed to 2021 where there was a slew of former Ohio State athletes taking part.

If you live in the Midwest, all you have to do is look outside to be reminded that we are in the throws of winter, and thus, it’s now time for the 2022 winter games just six months later in Beijing.

And yeah, just like the summer games, there are some former and current Buckeye athletes taking part in all the snowy fun in China. Most are from Ohio State women’s hockey, but all told, seven total athletes with a scarlet and gray in their background are a part of the 2022 winter Olympic games.

Let’s take a look at all of them.
