Former Notre Dame players score for Islanders in Stanley Cup playoffs

Sadly, they weren’t enough for a win.

The Stanley Cup playoffs have been underway for a few days now. One team competing for the grandest trophy in sports is the New York Islanders, who happen to have two former Notre Dame players on their roster. Both scored in Game 2 of their best-of-7 first-round series with the Carolina Hurricanes.

[autotag]Kyle Palmieri[/autotag] drew first blood in the game on a four-on-four late in the first period:

Early in the second period, [autotag]Anders Lee[/autotag] extended the Islanders’ lead further by scoring on a power play:

As nice as it would be to say they made the difference in this game, it proved to be the high mark for the Islanders. The Carolina Hurricanes proceeded to score five unanswered goals to win, 5-3, and take a 2-0 lead in the series.

The good news for the Islanders is that they’re going home for two straight games. However, they surely didn’t want to be in this hole, and a loss like this can be devastating to a team. Stranger things have happened in the playoffs though, so the chance always is there.

The Rangers scored the most chaotic OT goal to complete Stadium Series comeback

Artemi Panarin took advantage of the chaos in front of the Islanders’ net.

The New York Rangers emerged victorious from their outdoor Stadium Series bout against the New York Islanders in dramatic fashion.

Early in the second period, the Rangers were down 4-1 to their New York City rival with the game looking out of hand. However, the Rangers were able to battle back to tie the game 5-5 with just under two minutes to play in the third period to force overtime.

And the extra frame didn’t last very long either. Artemi Panarin forced an Islanders turnover in front of their own net and put the puck away during a chaotic scramble in the blue paint. Despite Islanders’ defenseman Noah Dobson knocking the net halfway off its pegs, the goal counted and the Rangers won!

There’s nothing like the explosion of nearly 80,000 fans in a highly contested outdoor hockey game. What a comeback and what a win for the Rangers.

Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2023-24 season

Know where to check out the former Irish who have made it to the highest level.

We understand that most of you come here for football, but Notre Dame has a devoted fan base for its hockey program. A lot of NHL players have come through the program, and many of them even have found great success at hockey’s highest level. And it’s unlikely any of them forget that they once donned the Gold and Blue.

For the 2023-24 NHL season, there are seven former Irish on rosters at the start. That’s three fewer than the start of each of the past two seasons. But be on the lookout for the 24 players with Notre Dame connections currently in the AHL or even the four in the ECHL. For now, here’s who you can watch in NHL uniforms:

The Islanders scored a goal after the puck deflected off Sebastian Aho’s face and it looked so painful

Thankfully, Sebastian Aho seemed to be okay after this nasty puck to the face.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Sebastian Aho paid a heavy price for this goal against.

During Tuesday’s Game 5 of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs between the Hurricanes and New York Islanders, the worst case scenario happened for the home team. The Islanders — down 3-1 in the series — held a 1-0 lead as the second period began, looking to stave off elimination in the first round.

Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, the Islanders doubled up their lead to 2-0 after a fortuitous bounce made its way past Antti Raanta. The bounce in question, however, came off of Aho — no, not that one — who was standing guard in front of the net for the Hurricanes when he took a puck to the face before Brock Nelson was able to tap it home.

Warning: The video below features the sight of blood.

Thankfully, Aho returned to the Hurricanes bench later in the second period as he appeared to shrug off any significant injury after that scary incident. Talk about terrible luck all around for Aho and the Hurricanes.

Canes center Martin Nečas punched a random Islanders player after being pushed into the New York bench

Hurricanes center Martin Nečas wasn’t about to lose the perfect opportunity to … punch a random guy on the Islanders bench?

Carolina Hurricanes center Martin Nečas was not about to let a perfect opportunity pass him by to, well, punch a random member of the New York Islanders on Friday night.

As the Canes and Islanders squared off in the opening round of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, Nečas got knocked into the New York bench by Isles center Jean-Gabriel Pageau.

Nečas decided to take advantage of the moment by getting a light punch in at New York center Brock Nelson before he went back to the ice.

Everyone on the Isles bench reacted with shock and annoyment as Nečas swiftly got away after landing his very quick punch, which wasn’t penalized by the referees.

This really is just one of those golden moments that only playoff hockey can give you.

Like, that is just prime slapstick comedy. In real life, you should never punch someone under any circumstance. In a sport that’s known for its petty brawls, y’know, at least make it funny.

Islanders winger Kyle Palmieri did take the brief swipe at Nelson in stride.

Hey, hockey is hockey, and as long as nobody actually got hurt, this was pretty humorous. New York also won Friday’s game 5-1, so everybody wins?

NHL refs missed a blatant high sticking penalty before Hurricanes OT Game 2 winner

Not good!

The officials working the New York Islanders’ overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes may want this one back.

In overtime of Game 2 of their 2023 NHL playoffs first-round series, it was right before Jesper Fast buried the game-winner for the Canes that refs totally missed a high stick to the face of the Isles’ Scott Mayfield, who went down after the blade from Jordan Marinook hit him.

But play went on and Fast scored, and now Islanders fans aren’t happy. Rightfully so! You can get any more blatant of a high stick than that!

Check out the video below and see if you agree:

Not great!

Sebastian Aho absolutely leveled Sebastian Aho with a punishing hit that broke the space-time continuum

Sebastian Aho put a punishing hit on … Sebastian Aho during Canes-Islanders on Monday night.

Hockey fans had to do a double take during Monday night’s NHL playoffs bout between the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes.

As the two teams squared off at Carolina’s PNC Arena to start the first round, Hurricanes center Sebastian Aho put a punishing hit on, you guessed it, New York Islanders defenseman Sebastian Aho as the game ran through its final minutes.

If you weren’t aware, there are two players named Sebastian Aho in the NHL, and worlds collided for the two hockey players in the most hilarious way possible.

Carolina’s Sebastian Aho got a pretty good move on New York’s Sebastian Aho in that sequence, and we’re betting New York’s Sebastian Aho will want to return the favor on Carolina’s Sebastian Aho in the next meeting.

The “Sebastian Aho playoff series” as it will now forever be called saw its first game go to Carolina, which means one of the Sebastian Ahos was victorious while the other will be looking to even things out in the next game.

Bo Horvat trade: Who won the Canucks and Islanders deal?

The Islanders made quite the playoff push by trading for Bo Horvat.

The 2023 NHL trade deadline is still over a month away, but the New York Islanders have made quite the splash.

On Monday, the Vancouver Canucks traded forward Bo Horvat to the Islanders in a pretty surprising afternoon deal. The move comes just over a week after the Canucks fired Bruce Boudreau and brought in Rick Tocchet as their new head coach. This teardown of the Canucks has been coming for some time, as Horvat was one of the major pieces on the trade block in Vancouver as the trade deadline approaches.

Let’s break down the NHL’s biggest trade of the 2022-23 season thus far, shall we?

Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2022-23 season

Which familiar name is your favorite?

The weather has gotten cooler, which means it soon will be cold. That means it’s time for the 2022-23 NHL season to begin. As usual, Notre Dame has plenty of representation in the league. Amazingly, not only do the Irish have the same number of former players from the beginning of last season (10), but the same players themselves.

Maybe it’s boring to some people to not see any new Irish players begin the season in the NHL, but 17 will start in the AHL, so you have that to possibly look forward to. Until then, here are the familiar 10 names:

New York Islanders buy $50,000 worth of Mega Millions lottery tickets as jackpot reaches $1.2 billion

Islanders fans have 25,000 reasons to pay attention to the next drawing

The Mega Millions jackpot is up to $1.2 billion and everyone wants a piece of the pie. Everyone, including the New York Islanders, which purchased $50,000 in tickets, the team announced.

Why $50,000? Apparently, the figure is in honor of the team’s 50th anniversary. Per Newsday’s Andrew Gross:

“As we prepare for our historic 50th anniversary season, we want to show our appreciation for our Islanders’ season ticket members and staff and give them a chance to participate in this massive Mega Millions drawing,” Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky said in a statement. “Revenue from lottery tickets is dedicated to education in New York state, so no matter what happens in today’s historic drawing, important funds have been generated for education in the state, which supports our fan base and their families.”

The $50,000 equates to 25,000 entries and the potential prize money would be split evenly between the team’s full-season ticket holders, suite holders, staff and the Islanders’ Children’s Foundation — but only for earnings above $250,000. Anything below will go solely to the foundation.

As it stands, there will be many Islanders faithful paying extra attention to the lottery. Maybe it’ll set the tone for New York’s upcoming NHL season.
