Badgers add another linebacker in transfer portal

Badgers snag another linebacker

The Badgers football team has been busy in the transfer portal over the last couple weeks and they added another player to their 2024 roster Thursday, gaining the commitment of former North Carolina linebacker Sebastian Cheeks.

Cheeks was a player that Wisconsin had their eyes on in the class of 2022 and he’ll now ultimately end up in Madison. The linebacker recorded just one tackle this season, appearing in one contest with the Tar Heels, but he’ll likely be an impact player with the Badgers.

He’ll join Luke Fickell’s squad with three seasons of eligibility remaining and Cheeks will join Leon Lowery (Syracuse) and John Pius (William&Mary) as the third linebacker to transfer to Wisconsin since the portal opened.

UNC football loses linebacker to transfer portal

The UNC football program has lost another linebacker to the transfer portal.

For the second time in three days, the North Carolina Tar Heels are losing a linebacker to the transfer portal.

After Deuce Caldwell entered the portal on Sunday, his teammate Sebastian Cheeks is making the same decision. Cheeks took to X (Formerly Twitter) to announce he was entering his name in the transfer portal on Tuesday.

The Evanston, Illinois native used a redshirt this season after appearing in three games in 2022. He appeared in eight games this season for UNC, recording just one tackle.

Cheeks was a little buried on the depth chart and with playing time being scarce, finding an opportunity elsewhere is something he’s pursuing.

The linebacker committed to North Carolina as a four-star recruit in the 2022 class, picking the Tar Heels over programs like Michigan, Illinois, and Oregon who also recruited him.

Wisconsin loses 2022 four-star linebacker Sebastian Cheeks to UNC

Wisconsin loses 2022 four-star linebacker Sebastian Cheeks to UNC

The Wisconsin football program saw class of 2022 four-star linebacker Sebastian Cheeks commit to North Carolina earlier today.

While indications were already out there that this would be the case, Cheeks had visited Wisconsin and was thought to have had the Badgers high on his list.

Nevertheless, the Evanston, Illinois standout chose head coach Mack Brown and the North Carolina Tar Heels over the likes of Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon and Texas.

Cheeks is 247Sports’ No. 131 player in the class of 2022, No. 15 linebacker and No. 4 recruit from the state of Illinois.

Wisconsin’s top targets in the class mostly remain uncommitted at this point, namely in-state OL Billy Schrauth, OL Carson Hinzman and DL Isaac Hamm.

With the Badgers currently sitting with the No. 38-ranked class of 2022 in the country and No. 10 in the Big Ten, there is still plenty of time to improve those slots and build upon 2021’s program-best recruiting output.

A four-star linebacker who visited Wisconsin announces his decision date

Some news to monitor in the coming week…

Wisconsin went on an impressive run a few weeks ago by landing a string of players directly after their official visit to the school.

The run made sense, as June 1 marked the end of the NCAA dead period and allowed players to take official visits before announcing their commitments.

One uncommitted player who visited Madison is linebacker Sebastian Cheeks. Well the class of 2022 four-star recruit tweeted today that he will announce his commitment on July 28 at 4 p.m.

Cheeks is 247Sports’ No. 131 player in the class of 2022, No. 13 linebacker and No. 4 recruit from his home state of Illinois.

247Sports Recruiting analyst Allen Trieu explains that five schools received visits from the linebacker: Wisconsin, Texas, North Carolina, Oregon and Michigan. He wrote today that those schools are believed to be ‘in the running’ to land a commitment.

For what it’s worth, there are two current crystal ball predictions for Cheeks to choose North Carolina and one for him to choose Texas.

We will see eight days from now whether Wisconsin lands another big-time recruit in the class of 2022.

Texas Football: Three recent 247Sports crystal ball predictions in favor of the Longhorns

According to 247Sports crystal ball predictions, three 2022 prospects have significant interest in Texas.

Two four-star prospects and one three-star recruit from the 2022 recruiting class reportedly have significant interest in Texas.

Brenen Thompson, Sebastian Cheeks and Jeremy Patton each recently had crystal ball predictions entered in favor of the Longhorns. Thompson is the highest rated of the four prospects and is the No. 11 wide receiver in the 2022 cycle. Cheeks is rated just behind Thompson and is considered the No. 4 inside linebacker from Illinois.

Crystal ball predictions are not a sure-shot of where a player will commit to, but it serves as a strong indicator of the interest between the player and the program.

Battle brewing with Michigan as Notre Dame tries to recruit Illinois ‘22 LB

Back off Wolverines!

The Notre Dame 2022 class continues to grow, just on Sunday the Irish added cornerback Jaden Mickey.

With the California defensive back pledging to the Irish, the class now sits at 10 players with more names continuing to be thrown around as potential additions.

A report from 247Sports Steve Wiltfong shows that Notre Dame target (premium), Sebastian Cheeks, hand intentions to speak with Michigan’s staff and most likely would take a visit to Ann Arbor. Cheeks told Wiltfong that “getting to Ann Arbor has been a priority of mine…I plan to commit this July or early August, so if there is time before that, then it very well could be the case.”

The Illinois linebacker is one the biggest remaining targets for Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman. At the current moment the Irish have a commit from Michigan safety Nolan Ziegler, who is projected to end up as a linebacker when he arrives to South Bend.

If Notre Dame was able to get a commitment from Cheeks, the pair would be a great combo in the 2022 recruiting class.

Notre Dame football 2022 defensive recruit wishlist

A look at which defensive players with Notre Dame offer that would be great additions to the 2022 recruiting class.

A few weeks ago, I took a look at which Notre Dame recruits on offense who currently held offers and could potentially join the growing 2022 class. Realistically, some of them could join, some of them might end up elsewhere, but one can wish right? We’ll, it’s time for the other side of the ball, my ’22 defense recruit wishlist for the Irish.

Is a former friend, Clark Lea, now turning into a big time foe?

Could Clark Lea be giving Notre Dame a run for their money with recruits that both schools are looking for the same profile in their players.

Today Vanderbilt’s new head coach Clark Lea and former Notre Dame defensive coordinator officially announced some of his main staff members with, in my estimation, the biggest one being the hire of Barton Simmons.

The former 247Sports lead scouting director is paving the way for Lea and his pursuit of high level academic and athletic prospects. The same type of prospects that Notre Dame recruits.

It should come to no ones surprise that Lea is going to target many of his old connections from his tenure with the Irish. Today, one of those connections was made with an offer to 2022 Illinois linebacker Sebastian Cheeks.

Cheeks is seen by many as a Notre Dame lean, but that could potentially be changing, with Lea leading his efforts to lure Cheeks to Vandy. Recruits don’t alway pin their offers on Twitter, but that has happened with Cheeks. The past relationship with Lea is playing a big part in the offer.

This should not be taken lightly. Yes, Vanderbilt is no where close to the Irish in terms of on-field football success, but with a high level coaching staff, and the knowledge that Simmons possesses in regards to recruits, they could be a thorn in Notre Dame’s side in future battles for prospects.

This will not be the last Irish prospect that Lea is going to offer. In fact, I feel like he is going to pursue plenty of current 2022 and beyond prospects that hold Irish offers or they have been heavily in contact with.

This could turn out to have a very teacher/student feel as Lea tries to accumulate talent for the Commodores. If he is able to quickly turn their program around, it is not good news for the Kelly and the Irish.

Notre Dame Recruiting update: Two new commits, Styles Jr. falls short and more

A look at the latest recruiting news for Notre Dame Football.

We are back to look at the week that was in Notre Dame recruiting. Already this week there has been plenty of action, from Philip Riley committing back into the 2021 class, the addition of 2021 elite kicker Josh Bryan but that’s not all that has been happening. The Irish have made it to later stages of a few elite players recruitments, multiple preferred walk-on spots offered and more. Also, stay tuned for a Fighting Irish Wire exclusive interview with 2021 offensive line commit Pat Coogan tomorrow.

Texas Football Recruiting: No. 3 ranked Illinois prospect gets offer from Longhorns

UT has gone into Big Ten country to offer 2022 LB Sebastian Cheeks. An Evanston, IL native, UT is the second Big 12 school to offer Cheeks.

Texas has gone into Big Ten country to offer 2022 linebacker Sebastian Cheeks. An Evanston, Illinois native, the Longhorns are the second Big 12 school to offer Cheeks. Iowa State has also joined the race.

Six Big Ten schools plus Notre Dame have extended offers to the four-star linebacker. Boston College, Louisville, and Syracuse from the ACC have gotten into the action, while Kentucky is the only SEC school involved in Cheeks to this point.
