Kirby Smart provides injury updates, talks Vanderbilt game

UGA football head coach Kirby Smart provided several injury updates ahead of the Georgia-Vanderbilt game.

The Georgia Bulldogs put it all together in a dominant 51-13 win against Kentucky in Week 6. The Dawgs are in the driver’s seat in the SEC East, but face a few tough challenges in the coming weeks.

Georgia travels to Nashville, Tennessee, to play the Vanderbilt Commodores in Week 7. The 6-0 Bulldogs are heavy favorites against 2-5 Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt has lost five consecutive games entering the Georgia-Vanderbilt game.

After Vanderbilt, Georgia will have its bye week. The Bulldogs have dominated the Commodores in the last two meetings between the schools.

College Football Week 11 scores: 8 top 25 teams fall

What is your biggest takeaway from Week 11?

It wasn’t the craziest weekend of the year in college football but that just speaks to a bit of the madness we’ve seen seeing as seven teams from the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings fell on Saturday.  One team had their CFP dreams shattered on their home field against a division rival and perhaps the most impressive turnaround this season continued in an all-Texas matchup in Austin.

So what does the wreckage look like as we put a bow on Week 11 of the college football season?  There isn’t as much in terms of the College Football Playoff compared to a couple of the last weeks we’ve witnessed but in all, seven teams ranked this week fell.

Here is how the entire College Football Playoff ranked teams from this week fared:

Georgia freshman TE Brock Bowers scores third TD of the day

That’s a hat-trick for the true freshman TE.

Georgia freshman tight end Brock Bowers, a former 4-star out of Napa, California, has been nothing short of impressive this season.

He’s emerged as a favorite target for both JT Daniels and Stetson Bennett and has shown that again today, scoring three touchdowns in just over one half of play against Vanderbilt.

Bowers’ first score came on Georgia’s opening drive, when the tight end took an end-around for a 12 yard score.

On the next drive, with Georgia leading 7-0, it was Bowers again. This time is was a 25 yard score on a pass from Daniels.

See both here:

Then on Georgia’s opening drive of the second half, it was Stetson Bennett who found Bowers for another touchdown.

This time from 29 yards out.

Recent decommit from Notre Dame finds new home with familiar face

A new place with a familiar face for a former Irish commit

Although the Irish lost a very good prospect in defensive end Darren Agu, it seems like he knew where he wanted to ultimately end up. It took just three days for the Georgian to announce his next school, Vanderbilt.

It seems like it’s a bit odd that Agu would commit to Clark Lea’s former school, the commit to his current school, Vandy. It’s not as if the Commodore’s offered him recently, that happened back in February of this year.

[lawrence-related id=30344]

Did the depth chart scare him off? Was it something else? Who really knows at this point in time but what we do know is that Agu won’t be returning to the Irish 2022 recruiting class.

The Irish now can move on to their other targets, although it would have been nice to see Agu in Blue and Gold.

Is a former friend, Clark Lea, now turning into a big time foe?

Could Clark Lea be giving Notre Dame a run for their money with recruits that both schools are looking for the same profile in their players.

Today Vanderbilt’s new head coach Clark Lea and former Notre Dame defensive coordinator officially announced some of his main staff members with, in my estimation, the biggest one being the hire of Barton Simmons.

The former 247Sports lead scouting director is paving the way for Lea and his pursuit of high level academic and athletic prospects. The same type of prospects that Notre Dame recruits.

It should come to no ones surprise that Lea is going to target many of his old connections from his tenure with the Irish. Today, one of those connections was made with an offer to 2022 Illinois linebacker Sebastian Cheeks.

Cheeks is seen by many as a Notre Dame lean, but that could potentially be changing, with Lea leading his efforts to lure Cheeks to Vandy. Recruits don’t alway pin their offers on Twitter, but that has happened with Cheeks. The past relationship with Lea is playing a big part in the offer.

This should not be taken lightly. Yes, Vanderbilt is no where close to the Irish in terms of on-field football success, but with a high level coaching staff, and the knowledge that Simmons possesses in regards to recruits, they could be a thorn in Notre Dame’s side in future battles for prospects.

This will not be the last Irish prospect that Lea is going to offer. In fact, I feel like he is going to pursue plenty of current 2022 and beyond prospects that hold Irish offers or they have been heavily in contact with.

This could turn out to have a very teacher/student feel as Lea tries to accumulate talent for the Commodores. If he is able to quickly turn their program around, it is not good news for the Kelly and the Irish.

Sarah Fuller becomes first female football player at Power Five program

Sarah Fuller of Vanderbilt became the first female to ever participate in a Power Five football game on Saturday doing so against Mizzou

It wasn’t a perfect day by any means but it was a significant one in the world of collegiate sports and female participation.

Sarah Fuller, who is normally the goalkeeper on Vanderbilt’s SEC Champion women’s soccer team, became the first female to participate in a Power Five football contest on Saturday as she suited up and performed the second-half kickoff in Vanderbilt’s game at Missouri.

Unfortunately, the Commodores were shut out 41-0 at Missouri and Fuller wasn’t able to attempt any field goals or extra points.

Despite the blowout loss for Fuller and the Commodores, it’s still a significant milestone for women in sports.

What happened for this to come to be was that Vanderbilt had multiple specialists who tested positive for COVID-19 and were unable to participate in Saturday’s game.

When those tests became known by Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason he approached Fuller about trying out for the sudden opening at kicker.

Mason called Fuller “a trooper” and “a champ” for stepping up in the significant moment.

Fuller, whose helmet had a sticker that read “Play like a girl” on the back of it, was obviously excited about her accomplishment after the game.

“Honestly, it’s just so exciting,” Fuller said. “The fact that I can represent all the girls out there that have wanted to do this or thought about playing football or any sport really, and it encourages them to be able to step out and do something big like this, it’s awesome.”

Fuller was the first-ever female to participate on a Power Five football team but the third female ever participates in an FBS game.

Fuller joined Katie Hnida of New Mexico and April Goss of Kent State in the accomplishment.

Despite the outcome for Vanderbilt, it is still an amazing accomplishment for Sarah Fuller.

Draft History: Warriors select Vanderbilt’s Festus Ezeli with final pick in 2012 first round

Before the Warriors are on the clock in 2020, Warriors Wire is rewinding through Golden State’s draft history to highlight memorable picks.

Before the Golden State Warriors are on the clock with the No. 2 overall selection next month, Warriors Wire is rewinding through Golden State’s draft history to highlight some of the most memorable picks — tradessurprisesbustssleepers and everything in between.

With two picks in the first round of the 2012 NBA draft, general manager Bob Myers eyed a pair of players the Golden State Warriors could build around their young backcourt tandem of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson

Following North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes landing in the Bay Area with the No. 7 overall pick in the draft, Myers and Mark Jackson targeted a prospect that can slide alongside veteran center Andrew Bogut in Golden State’s frontcourt.

June 28, 2012

To open the 2012 NBA Draft, the New Orleans Hornets and Charlotte Bobcats selected back-to-back Kentucky Wildcats with the first two picks. Anthony Davis went No. 1 to New Orleans with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist going to Charlotte at No. 2.

After selecting Barnes with their top pick in the 2012 edition of the draft, the Warriors were back on the clock with the No. 30 overall pick courtesy of the San Antonio Spurs.

With the final pick of the first round, the Warriors selected Vanderbilt’s Festus Ezeli.

In his final two seasons in Kevin Stalling’s Vanderbilt program, the 6-foot-11 center averaged double-figures in scoring. As a senior, Ezeli averaged 10.1 points per game on 53.9% shooting from the field with 5.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Along with the Commodores center, Jefferey Taylor and John Jenkins joined a group of three players to be selected in the 2012 draft from Vanderbilt.

Along with an SEC tournament championship in 2012, the trio featuring Ezeli, Taylor and Jenkins led the Commodores to three appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Once he was drafted by Golden State, Ezeli’s rookie training wheels came off rather quickly. While Bogut dealt with injuries, the first-year center was thrust into the starting lineup. During his rookie season, Ezeli started a career-high 41 games while averaging 4.0 boards, 2.4 points, and 0.9 blocks per contest.

In his sophomore year in the NBA, Ezeli sealed his spot as a member of the Golden State Warriors 2015 championship team. During Golden State’s postseason run to the Finals, Ezeli averaged 3.5 points and 3.1 rebounds in 9.2 minutes per contest.

Watch highlights from Ezeli’s 2015 season in Golden State via YouTube:

Following three seasons in Golden State, Ezeli signed with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2016. However, injuries hampered Ezeli’s career in the Pacific Northwest. After missing the entire season with a knee injury, Ezeli was waived by the Trail Blazers in 2017.

Other notable members of the 2012 draft class include Bradley Beal, Damian Lillard, Andre Drummond, John Henson, Evan Fournier, Draymond Green and Khris Middleton.
