Odds: San Jose State (-690)

With a 5-5 record, San Jose State has an opportunity to become bowl eligible with a win over San Diego State on Saturday night. In Week 11, San Jose State is coming off a massive 42-18 upset win over Fresno State. That win kept San Jose State alive in their bowl eligibility quest and it ruined Fresno State’s New Year’s Six bowl bid.

San Jose State has the momentum to get past a struggling San Diego State team. Earlier this week, San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke announced that he will retire at the end of the season. The Aztecs have added motivation to pick up at least one win for their head coach in the final two games of the regular season.

San Jose State’s Offense Needs To Produce Similar Results

San Jose State was on a roll against Fresno State in Week 11. The Spartans will need to replicate that production in Week 12. For that to happen, quarterback Chevan Cordeiro will have to lead the charge on offense. Against Fresno State, Cordeiro passed for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Kairee Robinson rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns. If San Jose State can find a way to balance its passing and rushing attacks, it could be another blowout win for the Spartans.

Prediction

San Jose State 37, San Diego State 20

If San Jose State can score points, San Diego State’s offense will have a hard time keeping up. The only way San Diego State can win is if it is a game that does not exceed the 30-point threshold. During San Jose State’s current five-game winning streak, the Aztecs have scored at least 30 points. Expect another high-scoring game from the Spartans.

Trojans Wire talks to Mountain West Wire about USC-San Jose State opener

We talked to our friends at @MWCWire. Want the San Jose State angle on this game? Follow Mountain West Wire!

The good folks at Mountain West Wire are covering San Jose State this weekend. They reached out to us and asked for our thoughts on USC and Saturday’s season opener.

Mountain West Wire asked us, “How do you see this game playing out?”

Our answer: “San Jose State will probably make some big plays early in the game. It could be a wild and crazy first quarter. USC’s defense might finally settle in midway through the second quarter, and the Trojans could begin to pull away after halftime. USC’s offense is simply not going to be stopped by San Jose State or any other opponent without a truly elite defense. USC 59, SJSU 21.”

Week 0 Scouting Notebook: A look at potential Chargers prospects in 2024 NFL draft

Here are a handful of prospects for Los Angeles Chargers fans to watch in Week 0.

We want to welcome back The Scouting Notebook.

The Scouting Notebook will feature prospects to keep an eye on when most of the college games occur. While some may think it’s too early to start talking about the 2024 NFL draft, there’s never a bad time to talk about the future of the Chargers.

That said, here are the players to watch for in Week 0.

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts

Boston is likely looking for players who’d be able to help right away, or a player with some upside to stash abroad or as a two way player.

As the 2023 NBA draft draws ever closer, the Boston Celtics have kept themselves very busy working out prospective targets for the top of the 2023 draft’s second round, with a pick owed them from either the Portland Trail Blazers (35th overall) or the Houston Rockets (33rd overall), pending the outcome of complicated protections which will be determined the night of the draft lottery.

The Celtics are looking for players who would be able to help a little depth-wise right away, or perhaps a player with some upside to stash abroad or as a two way player with the extra slot having been added in the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

Let’s take a look at the prospects we know the team has worked out (thanks to Rookie Wire’s Cody Taylor) that we have not already covered on the Celtics Wire (see our previous articles on wing Landers Nolley II, big man Oscar Tshiebwe, and center Isaiah Miranda).

2023 CBI First Round: San Jose State vs. Southern Indiana-First Look At The Screaming Eagles

Who are the Screaming Eagles?

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

The Spartans record breaking season continues with CBI invite, will face Southern Indiana in Daytona Beach, FL.

San Jose State made their mark on the Mountain West this season, and everyone took notice. The squad is in just year two of the Tim Miles era in the Bay Area. But the Spartans achieved their highest finish (5th place) in their near decade in the Mountain Mountain West.

Coach Miles is building the Spartans into a real Mountain West contender. After winning the conference Coach of the Year award for his revitalization of the program and boasting the Mountain West Player of the Year as well in Omari Moore. San Jose State looks forward, to what used to be a foreign concept in San Jose, postseason tournament action.

This is the programs 6th postseason appearance overall, and second in the CBI (2011). They come in as the No. 2 seed with the potential and talent to win it all in Las Vegas on March 22nd.

Who are the Screaming Eagles

Coach

Southern Indiana is led by third year head coach Stan Gouard. Who as a player for the Screaming Eagles in the mid-nineties led the program to a NCAA Div. II National Championship and runner up year the following season.

As a coach of the Southern Indiana program, he helped the team navigate the unfamiliar landscape of Covid-19 in his first year. While also helping springboard the program into the Div. I ranks this season. Before his time in Evansville, he coached the University of Indianapolis for twelve years. Which included eight NCAA Div. II Tournament appearances and a GLVC Coach of the Year award in 2014.

Star Players

So. G-Isaiah Swope (5-10, 170)

Stats: 15.6 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.4 SPG & 42.1% from three

Gr. F-Trevor Lakes (6-8, 220)

Stats: 12.9 PPG, 5.5 RPG & 41% 3FG

Sr. F-Jacob Polakovich (6-9, 245)

Stats: 12.4 PPG, 13.0 RPG & 1.4 APG

Southern Indiana’s Jacob Polakovich (32) takes a shot as the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles play the Eastern Illinois University Panthers at Screaming Eagles Arena in Evansville, Ind., Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023.

How did they get here

The Screaming Eagles are in their first year in Div. I after transitioning up from the Great Lakes Conference in Div. II. Their new home is the Ohio Valley Conference, as a new addition to a conference that has been ransacked in recent years due to realignment.

Southern Indiana finished 6th in the OVC, with a 16-16 (9-9) record and an impact made against some of the bigger schools in the region. Boasting home wins over Missouri Valley members Southern Illinois & Indiana State along with a road win over MAC school Bowling Green. The Screaming Eagles .500 finish and participation in the Gotham Classic at the start of the season qualified the program for a CBI invite.

Biggest Wins:

At Home-Southern Illinois 71-53

@-Bowling Green 69-57

At Home-Indiana State 88-85 OT

Eastern Michigan vs San Jose State Famous Idaho Potato Bowl 5 Things To Know

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

There was a moment when it seemed like San Jose State would be the star of the Mountain West, and possibly be in the run for a New Year’s Six spot. It started 4-1 with a close loss at Auburn, and was 6-2 with the conference there for the taking. Even with a tough 1-2 finish, this is still a fun team with QB Chevan Cordeiro leading a strong offense to go along with one of the nation’s most aggressive defenses.

Eastern Michigan couldn’t find the slightest bit of consistency over the first two months, but the team found ways to get the job done in a phenomenal finishing kick. Just when it seemed like the wheels might come off, it went 4-1 to close. All of a sudden, the inconsistent team was able to consistently win.

This is just the seventh bowl game in the history of Eastern Michigan football – it hasn’t exactly been a lot of fun. The program is 1-5, losing the last four under head coach Chris Creighton including last year’s LendingTree to Liberty 56-20. However, the lone win came in the 1987 California Bowl against …

San Jose State. It might have lost to the Eagles in 1987, but it’s 7-4 overall in bowls and 4-1 since the loss. Bowl games are hardly a regular thing, though, with a 34-13 loss to Ball State in the 2020 Arizona Bowl – the Spartans were missing a ton of players with COVID – the last appearance since wining the 2015 Cure.

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl has been rolling since 1997 when it was called the Humanitarian Bowl. The game is way overdue for something interesting with the last six decided by nine points or more. To be fair, though, there were some insane shootouts – like the Idaho 61-50 win over Colorado State in 2016. For the most part, though, this has been one of the most lopsided bowls over the last decade.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

The Eagle offense is relatively steady on the ground, has a good passing attack at times, and it’s not turning the ball over enough lately to matter with just two turnovers in the last five games.

Against San Jose State’s defense, just keep things moving. It’ll hold up well and force more field goals than allow touchdowns on long drives, but it’s not great on third downs. Eastern Michigan was the best in the MAC at converting its third down chances hitting 45% of its tries.

On the other side, the Eagle pass defense is in the spotlight. It finished second in the MAC, and the team was 6-1 when allowing fewer than 240 passing yards.

There’s a decent pass rush that shouldn’t have a problem getting into the backfield – San Jose State doesn’t have a ground game and the line allows too many sacks.

However …

Why San Jose State Will Win The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

The San Jose State defensive front lives behind the line.

It’s among the best in the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss, and it should be able to get to the Eastern Michigan backfield enough to be a problem.

On the flip side, the Eagles don’t do much on the offensive front. San Jose State doesn’t do much with the ground game, but it should be able to grind a wee bit – it’s more about yards per carry than bulk yards.

Again, Eastern Michigan has been solid at keeping the turnovers to a minimum lately, but it’s dead even in turnover margin on the season and San Jose State is +12, has yet to turn the ball over more than once, and it doesn’t have the penalty issues the other side has.

Hawaii vs San Jose State What’s Going To Happen

San Jose State is going bowling … maybe.

There might be too many Mountain West teams for available bowl spots, and while the powers-that-be should find places for everyone, it might be dicey for a 6-5 team – if the Spartans lose – on the three-game losing streak.

Hawaii’s big problem is stopping the run, but San Jose State doesn’t do that. However, the Spartan D will hold up just fine at home, the Rainbow Warriors will struggle on the road – they’re 0-5 away from home – and Chevon Cordeiro will make a huge difference.

The former Hawaii quarterback transferred to San Jose State. The rest of the offense will be terrific around its dual-threat playmaker under center.

Why San Jose State Will Win

San Jose State should be able to pick it back up after the rough performance against San Diego State.

What went right before the 43-27 loss? The passing game was able to roll for 230 yards or more in every game against everyone else. The Utah State defense is having a rough run and it’s about to get worse.

Wyoming and Hawaii were able to crank up over 500 yards of total offense, the run defense has gone bye-bye, and …

Why Utah State Will Win

Utah State has quietly made a run to turn its season around.

It dug too deep a hole over the first half of the season, but it won four of the last five games even though the defense is inconsistent and struggling.

The offense is doing a nice job of coming up with the key play at the right time, there haven’t been any turnovers in the last two games, and the passing game is accurate and efficient against the mediocre teams.

What’s Going To Happen

San Jose State isn’t the same team on the road.

It’s 5-0 at home ant 1-3 away, and it’s not just because the slate has been easier in San Jose. Utah State’s offense might not be perfect, but it’ll perk up enough in the back-and-forth fight to one up with a strong fourth quarter to get bowl eligible.

San Jose State vs San Diego State Game Preview

Why San Jose State Will Win

Just don’t screw up and everything should be okay.

San Diego State only turned it over once and was flagged twice in the 14-10 win over UNLV, but the team has had a rough time with way too many penalties, way too many turnovers, and way too many mistakes considering there isn’t enough offensive punch to overcome the problems.

San Jose State has the run defense to stop the Aztecs cold. The SDSU passing game might have perked up with Jalen Mayden turning into the team’s new star, but in a prefect world it’s the ground game that takes over.

The Spartan defensive front has been a consistent wall, there’s enough from the passing game to push the Aztec corners, and …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why San Diego State Will Win

San Diego State was one recovered onside kick away from being on a nice four game winning streak.

There’s nothing pretty about what it does, but the lack of mistakes last week against the Rebel was a step forward, Mayden has been terrific, and the O should click a bit against the Spartan secondary.

The ground game won’t be there, but all of a sudden San Jose State is giving up too many yards over the last few weeks. That, and …

What’s Going To Happen

For all of the good things San Jose State does, it’s struggling on third downs, the running game isn’t working, and the pass protection isn’t there.

Once again, it might not be anything visually appealing, but San Diego State will keep the score low and find a way to hang on. That’s what it does.
