Cleveland reportedly hired at Wichita State as assistant

T.J. Cleveland, the former Arkansas guard and assistant coach, has a new gig as he will be an assistant for Wichita State in 2023-2024.

Former Arkansas Razorback guard and assistant coach T.J. Cleveland was reportedly hired by Wichita State as an assistant last week.

Cleveland, the nephew of former Arkansas head coach Mike Anderson, has never served on a staff that wasn’t headed by his uncle.

Most recently, Cleveland served on Anderson’s staff at St. John’s before Anderson was fired unceremoniously and the Red Storm subsequently hired Rick Pitino.

Cleveland served on Anderson’s staffs at UAB, Missouri, Arkansas and St. John’s.

He will be reporting to Shockers head coach Paul Mills. Originally, Chris Hollender, who most recently worked under Dennis Gates at Missouri, was the assistant hire, but he resigned because of personal reasons.

A four-year letter winner at guard for the Razorbacks, Cleveland was on teams that went to three NCAA tournaments and won the program’s only SEC Tournament title in 2000.

Oklahoma Sooners land Wichita State transfer RHP Austin Henry

Oklahoma landed transfer right-handed pitcher Austin Henry from Wichita State today.

Oklahoma’s baseball team will have a bit of a Wichita State feel next season. Recently, the Sooners landed a commitment from Jace Miner to bolster their ranks. Now the Sooners added their second transfer from the Shockers on Thursday afternoon as right-handed pitcher Austin Henry committed to Oklahoma.

Henry hails from South Dakota but spent his first year at Wichita State. He was the No. 1 player in the state according to Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report. Perfect Game had him tabbed as the No. 72  recruit nationally and the No. 20 right-handed pitcher in the country.

He stands 6-foot-5 and weighs over 215 pounds. In high school, he was South Dakota’s first-ever Perfect Game All-American and was selected for the 2021 Perfect Game All-American Classic. Perfect Game also listed him as the top recruit joining the American Athletic Conference in the fall of 2022.

Henry’s redshirt year comes after Tommy John’s surgery in 2022 and should have him ready to start for Oklahoma next spring. He entered the transfer portal after some coaching changes at Wichita State. There’s tremendous upside with this commitment, and paired with the pledge of James Nesta, it gives the Sooners two high-ceiling arms that could headline their rotation over the next few years. Both players have professional aspirations.

From a scouting perspective, Henry’s fastball was sitting comfortably in the low to mid 90’s. That velocity could see a notable uptick as he gets stronger and in a collegiate strength and conditioning program. His curveball may be his best pitch, with spin rates over 3,200 RPMs. Pairing the two together and finding another secondary pitch to keep hitters off balance should be next in his evolution as a pitcher.

Skip Johnson has been a busy man as he continues to make sure Oklahoma’s pitching woes from the 2023 season aren’t a problem he has to sweat next year.

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts part III

Another round of prospective Celtics have worked out for Boston ahead of the 2023 NBA draft.

Win or lose in the NBA’s 2023 Eastern Conference Finals series with the Miami Heat, the Boston Celtics have plenty on their plate regarding their future as they continue to work out prospects projected to go in the second round of the ’23 NBA draft.

With the Celtics likely to need cheap depth in the future, look for prospects who are either polished enough to get some depth minutes in their rookie campaign or who might be okay with a season or two stashed abroad while the team makes decisions about how it will use the new two way player slot added to rosters in the latest collective bargaining agreement recently adopted by the league.

Adding to our previous reporting of the team’s known workouts comes a new wave courtesy of our sister sites Rookie Wire and HoopsHype as well as the New York Times’ Adam Zagoria — let’s take a look at who Boston has been scoping out.

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts

Boston is likely looking for players who’d be able to help right away, or a player with some upside to stash abroad or as a two way player.

As the 2023 NBA draft draws ever closer, the Boston Celtics have kept themselves very busy working out prospective targets for the top of the 2023 draft’s second round, with a pick owed them from either the Portland Trail Blazers (35th overall) or the Houston Rockets (33rd overall), pending the outcome of complicated protections which will be determined the night of the draft lottery.

The Celtics are looking for players who would be able to help a little depth-wise right away, or perhaps a player with some upside to stash abroad or as a two way player with the extra slot having been added in the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

Let’s take a look at the prospects we know the team has worked out (thanks to Rookie Wire’s Cody Taylor) that we have not already covered on the Celtics Wire (see our previous articles on wing Landers Nolley II, big man Oscar Tshiebwe, and center Isaiah Miranda).

Oklahoma Baseball suffers 18-0 loss to Wichita State

OU Baseball never got it going on the road against Wichita State as they lost 18-0

Nothing went right for the Oklahoma Sooners in Wichita on Monday night as they lost 18-0 to the Wichita State Shockers.

OU pitching gave up 18 hits while the OU bats collected just one on a Kendall Pettis double. Again, the Sooners had one hit in the entire game. The last time these two teams played, things went a bit better for the crimson and cream.

Aaron Calhoun started on the mound and didn’t last long with the Shockers doing a lot of damage early in the third inning. Calhoun was credited with the loss, getting  the first decision of his NCAA career. His record now stands at 0-1.

The pitching woes that have plagued the Sooners all season long were on full display tonight. Eight pitchers were used with half of them lasting less than an inning. OU pitching combined for nine walks and only six strikeouts.

This was Oklahoma’s final game before their last series of the season against No. 5 Texas Tech. Texas Tech is also one game ahead of OU and Oklahoma State in the Big 12 baseball standings.

The series will be in Lubbock and starts on Thursday, May 20. The Sooners have a lot of work to do in the next few days if they want a better result against the Red Raiders than the one they had tonight.

Oklahoma Baseball rides 7-run 6th inning to 9-5 win over Wichita State

The Sooners exploded for a seven-run 6th inning for a 9-5 victory against Wichita State before returning to Big 12 play.

The Oklahoma Sooners overcame an early deficit against the Wichita State Shockers on Tuesday night to improve to 22-13. The Sooners’ bats really came alive in the bottom of the sixth, with seven runs on four hits to come away with the 9-5 win.

The Sooners were living dangerously on the basepaths, stealing five bases in the bottom of the sixth.

Braden Carmichael had a rough start, allowing two runs through two innings. Carmichael had thrown only 36 pitches before being pulled. The Sooners would end up using nine pitchers against the Shockers in Tuesday night’s win.

The offense for the Sooners has been there all season, but with conference series on the horizon, the pitching staff needs to be better.

No home runs for the Sooners in this affair, but the lineup made up for it by capitalizing on Wichita State’s errors.

The Shockers had four errors in the game. The Sooners would make them pay for it all night with baserunners moving forward and tacking on one unearned run on the night. They would also add a run off a wild pitch in the big sixth inning.

Diego Muniz led the way with three RBIs and Tanner Tredaway had two hits from the top of the order.

This was OU’s final tune-up before returning to Big 12 play with a series in Lawrence against the Kansas Jayhawks. Oklahoma is currently sixth in the Big 12 and Kansas is dead last. A good series here could get OU back in business in the Big 12 conference.

The Sooners’ series against the Jayhawks begins Friday night at 6 p.m.

Notre Dame has great Senior Day, keeps Florida State from winning ACC

It’s been a long time since Notre Dame has been able to hold its own against a ranked opponent throughout.

It’s been a long time since Notre Dame has been able to hold its own against a ranked opponent throughout. Ending that drought by denying your opponent a chance to clinch the ACC championship is a good way to do so. That happened Saturday as the Irish led No. 11 Florida State throughout an 83-73 win on Senior Day. The Irish’s last win over a ranked team came against No. 6 Wichita State during the Maui Invitational in 2017.

The Irish (10-14, 7-11) led by as much as 20 and never fully let control of the game get away. There was concern when the Seminoles (15-5, 11-4) got to within four with two-and-a-half minutes to play. However, the Irish came up with some key steals and rebounds while also being able to milk the clock. When it was over, the Irish were locked into the 11th seed of the ACC Tournament and will open play Tuesday against Wake Forest, the 14th seed.

Prentiss Hubb had a rough shooting day at 6 of 17 from the field, but he scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career and led everyone with 22 points and five assists. Dane Goodwin came within a rebound of a double-double while scoring 15 points off the bench. The Irish got 11 points apiece from Nikola Djogo and Nate Laszewski. Juwan Durham also was consistent, totaling nine points and nine boards in his final game at Purcell Pavilion.
