Underdog corner: 3 best NFL picks and predictions for Week 7

Assessing the NFL betting odds and lines for Week 7, with three predictions and picks for the best underdog bets to make.

Despite NFL pointspread favorites winning a second straight week, we still had a winning week here, going 2-1 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans coming through.

That’s now five winning weeks out of six as our season record moves to 13-5. Of our 13 underdog covers, 11 have won outright.

With six teams on a bye this week, it’s a shallow card to choose from, but come up with three we must. Here are our NFL underdog ATS picks and predictions of Week 7.

Tennessee Titans +5.5 (-110) vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Over the last couple weeks:

  • The Buffalo Bills beat the Chiefs 38-20 as road underdogs in Week 5.
  • The Titans beat the Bills 34-31 as home underdogs in Week 6.
  • Now, the Chiefs are 5.5-point Week 7 road favorites over the Titans in Nashville?

An eye-catching line to be sure, but we’re not going to handicap a matchup going by results against a common foe alone.

However, the Chiefs have covered in only four of their last 17 games dating back to last season. In what should be a high-scoring affair Sunday, the mighty RB Derrick Henry and Tennessee should be able to keep it close going against a K.C. defense surrendering 133.2 rushing yards and 29.3 points per game and a league-most 6.7 yards per play.

Indianapolis Colts +4.5 (-115) at San Francisco 49ers

QB Carson Wentz and Indy started 0-3 but have won two of its last three. The loss was a 31-25 overtime setback in Week 5 on the road against the 5-1 Baltimore Ravens.

The Colts are 4-2 against the spread (ATS) – tied for fourth best in the league.

The 49ers (2-3) are coming off a bye and are expected to have QB Jimmy Garoppolo back from injury. Still, they are 1-4 ATS overall this year and 3-9 ATS as favorites since the start of last season.

The Niners very well could win Sunday night, but expect the improving Colts to keep it within the number.

Seattle Seahawks +4.5 (-110) vs. New Orleans Saints

In the 11 combined games involving the Saints and Seahawks this season, the underdogs have covered eight times with seven outright wins.

In addition, the home team has won all six Monday night games so far, going 5-1 ATS in process. So, Seattle was the choice to round out our underdog card.

We realize the Saints have had a bye week to prepare and the QB Geno Smith-led Seahawks are playing a second straight game without elite QB Russell Wilson.

But we’re banking on seeing more of the fight Seattle showed last week at the Pittsburgh Steelers – egged on this time by the always-raucous Seattle primetime crowd – and also one or two of the typical mistakes from Saints QB Jameis Winston to help the home team get the Monday night cover.

Underdog corner: 3 best NFL ATS picks and predictions for Week 5

Assessing the NFL betting odds and lines for Week 5, with three predictions and picks for the best ATS underdog bets to make.

After a hot start, we cooled off here in Week 4, cashing in on only one of our three weekly selections. But, hey, 9-3 after four weeks? Certainly no hanging heads here. Below, we look at the top NFL underdog ATS picks and predictions of Week 5.

Cincinnati Bengals +3.5 (-125) vs. Green Bay Packers

QB Aaron Rodgers and the Packers have bounced back nicely from their season-opening debacle against the New Orleans Saints, by reeling off three straight wins.

The Bengals are also 3-1 and have won with a promising mix of young offensive talent, led by second-year QB Joe Burrow and rookie WR Ja’Marr Chase, along with an improved and underrated defense.

That should be more than enough to at least keep it close — and possibly even win outright — at home against a banged-up Green Bay squad which likely will be without some key offensive linemen, its best pass rusher and top cornerback.

San Francisco 49ers +5.5 (-112) at Arizona Cardinals

QB Kyler Murray and the Cards are the league’s final unbeaten team and are coming off a huge 37-20 win over the previously undefeated Los Angeles Rams as 3.5-point road underdogs.

That, however, makes this a prime letdown spot for Arizona as it hosts an angry 49ers squad hitting the road off two straight stinging home setbacks.

Even though it likely will be rookie Trey Lance starting at QB for the Niners, they have had recent success in this NFC West series, winning three of the last four meetings.

Buffalo Bills +2.5 (-102) at Kansas City Chiefs

K.C. is favored by less than a field goal at home Sunday night for the first time ever in a game QB Patrick Mahomes is slated to start.

That’s a giveaway right there that the wrong team might be favored in this rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game won 38-24 by the Chiefs.

Both squads once again have top-three scoring offenses with top-level QBs, but the huge difference is defense as the Bills have surrendered the fewest points (44) and total yards (867) in the league while the Chiefs rank 31st in both categories, giving up 125 points and 1,751 yards.

With the spread under 3 points, take the Bills on the money line at +120 to earn a measure of revenge.

Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers odds and lines, with expert NFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The San Francisco 49ers (2-1) and Seattle Seahawks (1-2) meet in Week 4 for an NFC West showdown. Kickoff is at 4:05 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium. Below, we look at the Seahawks vs. 49ers odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

The Seahawks lost back-to-back games after a season-opening win over the Indianapolis Colts. The issue has been defense, as Seattle allowed 33 points to the Tennessee Titans and 30 to the Minnesota Vikings. QB Russell Wilson has thrown 7 touchdown passes in three games without an interception.

The 49ers suffered their first loss of the season in Week 3, falling 30-28 to the Green Bay Packers on a last-second field goal after they had scored a go-ahead touchdown with under a minute left. The offense has been uneven, with 41 points in Week 1, only 17 in Week 2 and 28 in Week 3. The Niners have had defensive issues as well while allowing two of their three opponents to score 30 or more points.

Seahawks at 49ers odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

49ers 34, Seahawks 28

Money line

The Seahawks handled a Colts offense that has struggled this season but have not stopped anyone else. The 49ers have been very good offensively in two of three games.

The Seahawks are the only team in the division with a negative point differential but they won 13 of the last 15 games between the two teams.

San Francisco lost their home opener and will not want to drop its first two at home. QB Jimmy Garoppolo was 7-3 at home over the previous two seasons.

Take the 49ERS (-155).

Against the spread

Both teams are 1-2 ATS this season.

The 49ers’ twos wins this year were each by 6 or more points. The Seahawks have not covered the spread in a loss, although this is the first game in which they’ve been underdogs.

This is really a toss-up game but expecting a 49ers win, 2.5 points is too few to think the Seahawks would lose but cover.

Take the 49ERS -2.5 (-130).

Over/Under

Both teams have one game where they kept their opponent under 20 points but their other two opponents scored at least 30.

Both offenses are explosive and both defenses have shown they can be scored on.

This will be a shootout. Take OVER 51.5 (-115).

Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing the Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers Week 3 odds and lines, with expert NFL picks, predictions and best bets.

Sunday Night Football in Week 3 features the Green Bay Packers (1-1) visiting the San Francisco 49ers (2-0). Kickoff is 8:20 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium. Below, we look at the Packers at 49ers odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

Green Bay started the year by getting throttled 38-3 on the road against the New Orleans Saints. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers threw 2 interceptions and was held without a touchdown pass and just 133 passing yards. The Packers gained only 229 yards. They bounced back in Week 2 on Monday Night Football with a 35-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Rodgers had 4 touchdown passes in the win.

The 49ers are one of three undefeated teams in the NFC West. They opened the season with a 41-33 win in Week 1 over the Detroit Lions. They were up 41-17 with under 10 minutes left before the Lions scored a couple of garbage-time touchdowns. They then beat the Philadelphia Eagles 17-11 in Week 2.

Packers at 49ers odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Packers 23, 49ers 20

Money line

This will be the fourth year in a row the Packers and 49ers face each other in the regular season and the third straight regular-season game between them in San Francisco. They split the previous two regular-season meetings at Levi’s Stadium.

It is tough to know whether either team is good offensively based on the first couple of weeks of the season. The 49ers piled on 41 points in Week 1 but struggled to move the ball in Week 2. The Packers scored 35 last week but managed only a field goal in their opener against the Saints.

The game becomes the measuring stick for both teams.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is nothing like Rodgers when he gets going, and Rodgers got going last week. The Niners are down their top two running backs to start the year, as Raheem Mostert is on injured reserve and Elijah Mitchell is doubtful.

Take the PACKERS (+135).

Against the spread

If the Packers more closely resemble how they played in Week 2 rather than Week 1 they are one of the best teams in the entire NFC. If the Niners do the same they will not have much of a chance to slow the Packers.

San Francisco will struggle to cover Green Bay’s receivers. The 49ers are already missing CB Jason Verrett for the season and with Moseley uncertain for the game.

Expecting an outright Packers win, I like them even more against the spread. Take the PACKERS +3.5 (-122).

Over/Under

Both teams are 1-1 O/U this year. However, both their big-scoring games came against the same opponent.

The Niners’ second game did not even crack 30 points, while the Packers’ season opener barely cracked the 40s.

Can the two teams together get into the 50s? I don’t think they will.

Take UNDER 50.5 (-105).

NFL Week 1 Can’t-Miss Parlay: 3 bets you can count on

Assessing the 3 best parlay bet options for Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season. Lock-in these wagers to maximize your payday.

The 2021 NFL season got off to a flying start Thursday night as Tom Brady and the defending-champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers outduel Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys.

Even if you missed on the Cowboys cover or the over, which flew past the total in the third quarter, there remain plenty of other prime Week 1 wagering opportunities with 15 games remaining. Here’s a three-leg, can’t-miss parlay to give your NFL bankroll an opening-week boost …

Also see: Week 1 best bets

NFL can’t miss parlay: Week 1

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:05 a.m. ET.

Leg 1: San Francisco 49ers -8.5 (-110) at Detroit Lions

At 6-10 in 2020, the Niners only won one more game than the Lions, but the franchises have been moving in opposite directions ever since. Head coach Kyle Shanahan’s crew in San Francisco has almost all of its primary players, including QB Jimmy Garoppolo, TE George Kittle and defensive standout Nick Bosa back and healthy after enduring the league’s worst injury situation in 2020.

They’ve also added some intriguing new pieces in rookie QB Trey Lance and RB Trey Sermon, making Shanahan’s daunting offensive schemes even more dangerous and unpredictable heading into Week 1’s clean slate.

The Lions, meanwhile, downgraded quarterbacks in trading longtime starter Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff, questionably handed over the squad to a quirky and unproven head coach in Dan Campbell and didn’t do nearly enough to shore up a defense that was scorched for the most average points (32.4) and total yards (419.8) per game in 2020.

Take the reinvigorated 49ERS and don’t fret over laying the 8.5 points on the road.

Leg 2: Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots UNDER 43.5 (-110)

Two young quarterbacks, including Pats rookie Mac Jones making his first start.

Two coaching staffs who know each other very well, including Patriots-defensive-coordinator-turned-Dolphins-head-coach Brian Flores.

Two above-average defenses, including the reinforced and revitalized Pats.

Two 2020 matchups that produced totals of 32 and 34 points.

We’re going with the UNDER 43.5 (-110).

Leg 3: Denver Broncos -3.5 (+105) at New York Giants

Both teams finished among the league’s bottom 12 a season ago, but the Broncos look to have made the most significant offseason strides.

The Giants’ injury-wracked offense, featuring turnover-prone QB Daniel Jones and one of the league’s worst offensive lines, looks to be overmatched against an improved Denver D returning Von Miller and featuring what looks to be one of the league’s elite secondaries.

So, if new QB Teddy Bridgewater can just bring a steady hand to the team’s talented young offense, the BRONCOS shouldn’t have too much trouble covering a road spread of 3.5 points (-135).

San Francisco 49ers at Detroit Lions odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing the San Francisco 49ers at Detroit Lions Week 1 odds and lines, with expert NFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Lions host the San Francisco 49ers for their Week 1 regular season openers at Ford Field with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the 49ers at Lions odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

San Francisco’s 2020 season was your standard “Super Bowl loser curse” as the 49ers finished 6-10 due in large part to a plethora of injuries to their starting lineup. San Francisco had by far the most adjusted games lost to injury, according to Football Outsiders.

Detroit moves into a new era after parting ways with head coach Matt Patricia and granting Matthew Stafford’s trade request by sending him to the Los Angeles Rams for QB Jared Goff and draft capital.

The Lions finished in the cellar of the NFC North with a 5-11 record and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

49ers at Lions odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

49ers 24, Lions 20

Money line

PASS with a slight “lean” to the Lions (+330) because I love the value with their spread and, generally like to sprinkle on an underdog’s money line when taking them plus points.

Against the spread

Everyone and their grandmother is betting the 49ers -8.5, adding their money line as an odds booster to their parlay and teasing San Francisco down to a better number.

However, it’s typically profitable fading lopsided betting markets and heavy favorites in the NFL, especially early in the season. It’s rare that a road team is favored more than a touchdown in Week 1.

Road teams getting at least 7.5 points in Week 1 are 3-1 ATS since 2011, and the pricing makes the 49ers-Lions contest comparable to those games. Each contest pitted a preseason Super Bowl-favorite against a team expected to finish in the basement of the NFL standings. This spot is no different.

However, I have a hunch new Detroit head coach Dan Campbell will have his guys ready to play in Week 1. Campbell has a completely different vibe than Patricia and he’ll rally the Lions around the “nobody believes in us” narrative.

I’m skeptical San Francisco’s regains its defensive form from 2019 because the secondary is older and thinner and former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was hired for head coaching vacancy with the New York Jets. Detroit’s offensive line has some talent and can keep Goff upright long enough for the Lions to have success on offense.

GIMME the LIONS +8.5 (-108) for 1 unit.

Over/Under

Slight “LEAN” to the UNDER 45.5 (-105) for a one-third unit since my predicted score isn’t that far off of Tipico’s listed total.

I’m expecting San Francisco to struggle a tad out of the gate offensively because it’ll need to knock the rust off since QB Jimmy Garoppolo and many of his weapons missed most of last year with injuries.

If 49ers-Lions is as one-sided as the market action then UNDER 45.5 (-105) could serve as a slight hedge for our Detroit wager if San Francisco dominates. The 49ers ranked 25th and 29th in pace over the past two seasons, according to Football Outsiders.

Las Vegas Raiders at San Francisco 49ers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Las Vegas Raiders at San Francisco 49ers preseason Week 3 matchup, with NFL odds, lines, picks, predictions and best bets.

The Las Vegas Raiders (2-0) meet the San Francisco 49ers (1-1) Sunday for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff at Levi’s Stadium. Below, we look at the Raiders vs. 49ers odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

The Raiders scratched out a 17-16 win on the road against the Los Angeles Rams last time out, going Under on the total. That comes on the heels of a 20-7 win Aug. 14 over the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason opener, posting a cover and Under result.

The 49ers posted a 15-10 win on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers, failing to cover for the second time in as many preseason outings while the Under cashed for the second straight contest.

Raiders at 49ers odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

49ers 20, Raiders 16

Money line

The 49ers (-230) are likely to use both QBs Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance, which isn’t great news for the Raiders (+180). While head coach Kyle Shanahan has tabbed Jimmy G for Week 1, we’ll still likely see both going hard in this one.

However, you cannot risk more than two times your potential return on a preseason game, so AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

The RAIDERS +5.5 (-108) are a decent play catching the points, as QB Nathan Peterman has been surprisingly effective seeing a bulk of the work under center in the preseason. QB Marcus Mariota could also make his preseason debut after dealing with a quadriceps injury.

Over/Under

OVER 35.5 (-115) is the lean, ever so slightly. We should see the starters go a little longer in this one, and that will make all the difference.

The Over cashed in all four of the preseason games Friday, and we should see a slight uptick in scoring in this one.

New to NFL betting?

The 49ers are home favorites with an implied win probability of 66.67 %. Their -200 money line odds can be expressed as a fraction of 1/2 or a decimal of 1.5. San Francisco will need to win by 4 or more points in order to cover the spread.

The Raiders cover the spread if they win outright or lose by 3 points or less. Their +160 odds represent an implied win probability of 38.46%.

The Raiders and 49ers must combine to score 36 or more points for a bet on the Over 35.5 to cash. A point total of 35 or fewer points is a win for the Under.

San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing the San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers preseason Week 2 matchup, with NFL odds, lines, picks, predictions and best bets.

The San Francisco 49ers (0-1) meet the Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) Sunday for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at SoFi Stadium. Below, we look at the 49ers vs. Chargers odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

The 49ers hung with the Kansas City Chiefs in the first half last week, trailing 7-6 after 15 minutes and leading 9-7 at half. A late surge by the reserves of Kansas City led the Chiefs to a 19-16 win. Rookie QB Trey Lance threw for 128 yards and a touchdown in his debut.

The Chargers picked up a 13-6 win over the neighboring Rams in a sloppy affair at SoFi. The Bolts didn’t score a touchdown until midway through the third quarter when the starters were already showered and dressed.

49ers at Chargers odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

49ers 17, Chargers 13

Money line

The 49ers (-250) are heavy favorites despite their loss last weekend. The thinking here is that they have two top-flight quarterbacks in Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo and the offense should more balanced deeper into the game.

Still, AVOID, and play the spread instead.

Against the spread

The CHARGERS +4.5 (-105) are worth a look as I expect at least a backdoor cover here. L.A. exhibited some suffocating defense last weekend, although the Rams sure helped by playing sloppy football.

Lance will try to ball out when he has his number called, and that should make Chargers bettors nervous. However, in the end, look for L.A. to grab the cover in the fourth quarter once the reserves kick in.

Over/Under

UNDER 34.5 (-115) is the play here as long as Garoppolo and Lance don’t light it up too much when they get their chance; the Chiefs were able to move the ball on the 49ers last week so that is a concern too.

San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers odds and lines: Early hype building for Niners

Assessing the odds and lines for Sunday’s San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers NFL preseason Week 2 matchup.

The San Francisco 49ers (0-1) visit the Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) in the second game of the 2021 preseason for both sides. Kickoff at SoFi Stadium is scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the 49ers vs. Chargers odds and lines.

49ers rookie QB Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, was the star of Week 1, despite going just 5-for-14 through the air against the Kansas City Chiefs. He finished with 128 passing yards and a touchdown. Third-string QB Josh Rosen played the bulk of the snaps under center and finished 10-for-15 for 93 yards with a pick.

The Chargers topped the Los Angeles Rams 13-6 as the official road team last week. Reigning Rookie of the Year QB Justin Herbert had the day off as veteran QB Chase Daniel went 15-for-24 for 104 yards in the slow-paced game.

The 49ers (-200) have an implied win probability of 66.67%. Those odds can be seen as a decimal of 1.50 or a fraction of 1/2. San Francisco -4.5 (-105) must win by 5 or more points in order to cover the spread.

The underdog Chargers can cover the spread by losing by 4 or fewer points, winning outright or playing to a tie. They have a modest 38.46% implied win probability with the +160 money line odds.

The -115 odds on the projected total of 34.5 points suggests the Under is the more likely outcome with a total of 34 or fewer points scored. There would need to be 35 or more points scored to cash Over (-105) tickets.
