Packers rookie Romeo Doubs makes another ‘wow’ play at Family Night

It wouldn’t be a training camp practice for the Green Bay Packers without a highlight play from rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

It wouldn’t be a training camp practice for the Green Bay Packers without a highlight play from rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs. On Family Night at Lambeau Field, Doubs added to his tally of impressive plays this summer with another spectacular catch in the one-on-one phase.

“Every single day, there’s been at least one ‘wow’ play. And that’s rare for a young guy like that,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said this week. “We’ve had some guys over the years do that, but they are all in the top 10 of Packers receiving history. Good start for him.”

Doubs didn’t take long to create his “wow” play on Friday night.

Early in one-on-ones, Doubs used vertical speed to beat cornerback Kiondre Thomas and then his impressive contested-catch ability to finish the play for a touchdown.

Here’s the play:

Here’s the full route:

Later in one-on-ones, Doubs beat Thomas clean on a slant for another touchdown. He did have one missed opportunity. In a team period, Doubs got behind the coverage but a deep ball from Danny Etling was just beyond his reach (see lead photo).

Aaron Rodgers: Rookie WR Romeo Doubs doing ‘rare’ things to start camp

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers on Doubs: “Every single day, there’s been at least one ‘wow’ play. And that’s rare for a young guy like that.”

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers wasn’t shy about piling on the praise for rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who has been an early standout for Matt LaFleur’s team through the first week of training camp.

At his locker on Wednesday, the four-time NFL MVP said Doubs has made the most of his early opportunities during camp, and the consistency of the “wow” plays made by the rookie has Rodgers thinking about some of the recent greats at receiver in Green Bay.

“It’s never been too big for him. I really like the approach,” Rodgers said.  “He’s a very humble kid, but you’re starting to see the personality come out a little bit, which is fun to see. He’s had a lot of opportunities, which has been great. With Sammy not practicing a couple of days, and Christian being out, a lot of opportunities for him, and he’s made the most of it.”

Day after day, Doubs is putting himself into the spotlight by making big plays, like a leaping catch over Eric Stokes during a team drill on Day 2, a win against Stokes in a one-on-one drill and an acrobatic catch in the corner of the end zone from Jordan Love on Tuesday.

LaFleur complimented Doubs’ routine as a rookie. Randall Cobb thinks Doubs has a “special” ability to make contested catches. Love said Doubs makes tough catches look easy.

Count Rodgers among those impressed with what Doubs is putting on tape every day.

“It’s not just the team stuff. I thought he ran good routes yesterday in the one-on-ones against Stokes,” Rodgers said. “It’s just a matter of the mental stuff. He’s still making some mental mistakes, but you expect those. It’s the approach, his release patterns, he catches the ball with his hands.”

A lot of good receivers have come through Green Bay since Rodgers has been the starter. Donald Driver. Greg Jennings. Jordy Nelson. James Jones. Cobb. Davante Adams.

All the “wow” plays from Doubs so far had Rodgers reminiscing about some of the past greats.

“Every single day, there’s been at least one ‘wow’ play. And that’s rare for a young guy like that,” Rodgers said. “We’ve had some guys over the years do that, but they are all in the top 10 of Packers receiving history. Good start for him.”

That’s big praise. It’s early, but the Packers’ fourth-round pick has fully captured the attention of the future Hall of Fame quarterback. Is the next great connection in Green Bay already in the early stages of forming?

Packers rookie Romeo Doubs showcasing his ability to win in multiple ways

So far in training camp, rookie WR Romeo Doubs has been exactly the player the Packers thought they were getting in the fourth-round pick. From @Paul_Bretl:

As general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters before the Green Bay Packers’ seventh training camp practice on Wednesday, rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs is off to a “great start.”

But the thing about Doubs’ fast start that has Gutekunst particularly excited is that he is showcasing what the Packers saw on film during his time at Nevada, which is that he can win in a variety of ways.

Whether he’s been lined up out wide or on the boundary, Doubs has spent the last week making plays and doing so in all parts of the field.

Doubs came out of Nevada as, what Gutekunst would call, one of the more “polished players coming out of college” in this year’s draft.

Over four seasons with the Wolfpack, Doubs was targeted 339 times while totaling 3,324 yards and 26 touchdowns. Doubs would run a 4.47-second 40-yard dash at his pro-day and was a very effective downfield target, finishing third among all collegiate receivers in deep receiving yards – or yards accumulated on passes that travel at least 20 yards. He also averaged nearly 18 yards per catch.

While that is certainly impressive, it’s also not as if that’s all Doubs could do either. In fact, he was utilized all over the field, with his most recent season being a prime example of that.

According to PFF, of Doubs 110 targets, 14 came behind the line of scrimmage. Another 40 came within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage, 31 were in the 10 to 19-yard range, and 25 that were considered deep – which overall is a fairly equal distribution.

Doubs would dominate over the middle of the field with 832 yards on 51 receptions, but roughly a third of this total yardage came outside the hash marks, illustrating that he can win on the perimeter as well, where he was efficient with his opportunities catching 22 of his 28 targets.

Doubs would also play a career-high 21% of his snaps in 2021 lined up in the slot, a position where Drae Harris of The Draft Network believes he can carve out a role in the NFL with his larger frame.

As you can see, the numbers showcase a player who has won at all levels of the field, as well as inside and out, which in large part comes from his ability to create separation and then pick up yards after the catch (YAC) – Doubs would rank 12th in total YAC in 2020 and 15th in YAC per catch.

“His very good and sudden speed immediately threatens a cornerback’s cushion in coverage, which affords him good separation in the intermediate areas of the field,” wrote Harris. “He easily takes hitches, smokes, and bubble screens for good yardage due to his ability as a strong runner with the football.”

As Gutekunst said, and as we all know, Doubs is off to a hot start in Packers training camp. As always, there is a lot that goes into the results, but his ability to win in all parts of the field as well as from the slot and the boundary – which we saw from him often at Nevada – are big reasons behind that early success.

Aaron Rodgers already impressed with Packers rookie WR Romeo Doubs

One of the Green Bay Packers’ rookie wide receivers is already drawing high praise from Aaron Rodgers in training camp

The Green Bay Packers passed on a wide receiver with both of their first-round picks in the 2022 NFL draft, then traded up to the top of the second round of North Dakota State’s Christian Watson, but it’s a fourth-round pass-catcher who is stealing the headlines in training camp.

Romeo Doubs has made some head-turning plays in practice, which has clearly impressed Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“That’s kind of rare for a young guy,” Rodgers said Wednesday about Doubs’ ability to make “wow” plays during his first training camp (via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman).

Doubs was a big-play machine at Nevada, and without Davante Adams, the Packers would love to get plenty of them from their rookie fourth-rounder this season and beyond.

Fantasy football training camp roundup: July 29-Aug. 2

The most important fantasy football news updates from camp.

Too busy to sift through all of the news from NFL training camps? Here’s a spin around the league for a look at the most notable fantasy football news through Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Jordan Love: Packers rookie Romeo Doubs making tough catches ‘look easy’

Love on Packers rookie Romeo Doubs: “He’s making those contested catches, and those tough plays, he’s making them look easy.”

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love tossed a touchdown pass to rookie receiver Romeo Doubs on Tuesday, creating the latest big play in a long line of big plays made by the Packers’ fourth-round pick through the first six practices of camp.

It was a tough catch. According to reporters at practice, Doubs was covered tightly by Rico Gafford in the corner of the end zone and had to fight through contact and still get two feet in bounds to complete the play, which he did.

Love said Doubs just continues to make tough plays look easy.

“Just the way he’s catching the ball. He’s making those contested catches, and those tough plays, he’s making them look easy. And it’s not easy to do,” Love said after practice Tuesday.

Doubs really opened eyes early in training camp by skying over Eric Stokes to make a difficult catch. On Tuesday, Doubs beat Stokes for another big completion during a 1-on-1 period between receivers and cornerbacks.

Veteran receiver Randall Cobb said Doubs’ ability to win on contested catches is a special trait.

“The biggest piece is just his ability with the 50-50 ball,” Cobb said last week. “When it’s thrown up and it’s between him and the DB to make a play. That’s one thing you can’t coach. You can’t really teach that. You either have it or you don’t, and he has it. That’s special.”

Contested catches might suggest a player struggles to consistently get separation and is then forced to make plays in traffic. Or it’s a sign that a quarterback trusts a receiver to make a play regardless of the coverage or situation. Either way, Doubs is finishing plays when given the chance so far at Packers training camp.

Can Doubs become the next James Jones for Aaron Rodgers (and possibly Love in the future)? At the height of his powers, Jones was a contested-catch expert, often making improbable catches in tight spaces at every level of the field. The consistency of that ability helped Jones gain the trust of Rodgers over time. Doubs, who is of similar size and athletic ability, appears to be following the same path to start his rookie season.

Packers rookie Romeo Doubs gets a win vs. Eric Stokes in 1-on-1s

In a 1-on-1 drill during Tuesday’s padded practice, Packers rookie WR Romeo Doubs got a big win vs. CB Eric Stokes.

The drill might be overly friendly to the offense, but a 1-on-1 opportunity for Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs against ascending second-year cornerback Eric Stokes ended in another big play and impressive moment for the rookie.

According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Doubs and Stokes faced off in the last rep of a 1-on-1 drill between receivers/cornerbacks and tight ends/linebackers. The result was a long touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Doubs, who “burned” Stokes down the sideline.

Stokes has elite speed and showed sticky coverage skills as a rookie, making Doubs’ win all the more impressive, especially considering Tuesday was the first day all players are in full pads during Packers training camp.

This is no longer shorts and helmets. Doubs keeps impressing.

He also did this to end the team period of Tuesday’s practice:

Earlier in the 1-on-1 drill, Doubs drew a holding penalty on Stokes a few reps after Stokes won a physical one-on-one against Doubs, per Andy Herman of Packer Report.

Again, one-on-ones are inherently difficult on defensive backs, who rely on leverage with routes and knowing where help of teammates is coming from on every snap of a live game environment. In very few situations is a cornerback truly 1-on-1 with a receiver. In fact, quarterbacks go through progressions attempting to single out 1-on-1 opportunities within plays. So this is definitely a drill tilted heavily toward the wide receiver.

Still, Doubs keeps making the most of his opportunities. He’s been an early and somewhat unexpected standout for the Packers through the first week of training camp.

Packers rookie WR Romeo Doubs adjusting well to new role

Once the alpha WR at Nevada, Packers’ fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs is now adjusting to life as a rookie in the NFL.

Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs has gone through a role reversal since joining the team as a fourth-round pick. Doubs has had to adjust to his new status in the NFL after being the leader in Nevada’s receiver room for his final year.

“Going into my senior season, I had a very big role in the receiver room, and I had to tell myself every day, regardless of the numbers that I put up, that it’s important that I show leadership to the other guys,” Doubs said.

Doubs is used to being the alpha. Before the 2021 season, Doubs was coming off an impressive junior campaign in which he led the team with 58 catches totaling 1,002 yards and nine touchdowns. The expectations only heightened entering his senior season.

However, Doubs responded by posting even bigger numbers. hauling in 80 passes for 1,109 yards and 11 scores. Back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons put him on the radar as a future NFL draft pick, with the Packers fortunate enough to snag him on Day 3.

His first training camp just started last week, but Doubs still finds himself setting a good example. Head coach Matt LaFleur highlighted the rookie’s work ethic after stringing together a couple of good practices.

“Romeo is the first one in the building,” said LaFleur. “He is in his locker getting primed. I see him in the weight room, getting his body and mind ready. He’s already kind of established a routine for himself, and I think that’s one of the things that rookies have a hard time finding, and once they do, they can take off.”

Once a teacher, Doubs is now the student doing everything he can to learn from the veterans in front of him.

“I feel like being here is just me being a younger guy, which is being able to soak up guidance and information from Randall (Cobb), Allen (Lazard), and Sammy (Watkins), just trying to get an understanding of how this game usually goes.”

Doubs is catching on quickly. He’s been one of the surprise standouts in practice after making some impressive grabs against the starting defense. Perhaps one day he will find himself in the role of a leader once again.

Aaron Rodgers on rookie Romeo Doubs: ‘We all feel really good about Romeo’

Packers rookie WR Romeo Doubs has impressed just about everyone through the first week of training camp, including the four-time NFL MVP throwing him the football.

Green Bay Packers rookie receiver Romeo Doubs has impressed just about everyone through the first week of training camp, including the four-time NFL MVP throwing him the football.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, in an appearance on NFL Network on Saturday, was quick to praise the Packers’ fourth-round pick while discussing the team’s wide receivers.

“Romeo Doubs has had a really nice start to the camp,” Rodgers said. “He’s been getting a lot of attention based on some of the plays he’s made. I like the approach. Very understated kid, very humble kid.”

Doubs, who produced back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons at Nevada, had to wait 131 picks in the 2022 draft before the Packers picked him at No. 132 overall.

“It’s surprising how many teams passed on him,” Rodgers said. “Whatever reason it was, we all feel really good about Romeo and the start he’s gotten off to.”

Doubs has made notable plays in the passing game each day of training camp, including a handful of catches on passes from Rodgers.

Veteran receiver Randall Cobb believes Doubs has the potential to be special, especially considering his ability to consistently win 50-50 balls.

“The biggest piece is just his ability with the 50-50 ball,” Cobb said. “When it’s thrown up and it’s between him and the DB to make a play. That’s one thing you can’t coach. You can’t really teach that. You either have it or you don’t, and he has it. That’s special.”

Can Doubs stay consistent during training camp and earn a big role for Rodgers and the Packers offense? The opportunity is certainly available. Rodgers knows there are a lot of targets, yards and touchdowns to distribute after losing Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Maybe the Packers’ second of three draft picks at receiver is going to take a bigger chunk of the pie than most predicted before the start of training camp.

Randall Cobb believes Packers rookie Romeo Doubs has potential to be special

Randall Cobb on Packers rookie WR Romeo Doubs: “He has a lot of tangibles, a lot of special gifts. That’s potential.”

A handful of training camp practices isn’t enough time to make a full and accurate assessment of a rookie wide receiver, but Green Bay Packers veteran Randall Cobb sees special potential – potential being the key word – in fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs, one of the early standouts of camp.

“Nobody knows his ceiling just yet,” Cobb said Friday. “He has a lot of tangibles, a lot of special gifts. That’s potential. We all know potential is one thing…it’s going to take a little bit of time to figure out how good he is going to be. But he has the pieces. We never want to set too high of expectations for people, but he’s shown some flashes.”

Doubs made a big splash on Thursday with a leaping catch in traffic for a touchdown and another score to end team drills. It’s early in camp, but he’s getting mixed in with the first team and consistently making plays for Aaron Rodgers.

Finishing contested catches is one area where Cobb sees something truly special in Doubs.

“The biggest piece is just his ability with the 50-50 ball,” Cobb said. “When it’s thrown up and it’s between him and the DB to make a play. That’s one thing you can’t coach. You can’t really teach that. You either have it or you don’t, and he has it. That’s special.”

Cobb knows this trait: He’s played alongside former Packers receivers such as Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Davante Adams, who all turned into playmakers with an ability to win on 50-50 balls.

Coach Matt LaFleur said Doubs has settled into an effective routine early on as a rookie, helping him get comfortable and play fast early in his first training camp.

Cobb sees a young player hungry to learn with a professional attitude and the right mindset for realizing his potential.

“He has the tools,” Cobb said. “It’s on himself and on me and our receiver group to mold him and build him and help him realize what he has. I’ve been very impressed with him so far since I’ve been here. Him and Christian. I’ve been impressed by both of them.”
