Jets Week 14 snap counts: Playing time breakdown from win vs. Texans

A look at how the snaps were distributed from the Jets’ Week 14 win against the Houston Texans.

The Jets needed a win not only to keep their season alive but also to build back morale after what had to be a very stressful week at the office. New York snapped a five-game losing streak firmly with a 30-6 win over the Houston Texans.

Because the Jets were up comfortably, they were able to empty the bench and get other players some snaps late in the game, a luxury the Jets haven’t been afforded much lately. We’ll take a look at how the snaps were distributed on offense and defense from Week 14.

Jets Week 13 inactives: Randall Cobb, Billy Turner among group

Randall Cobb and Billy Turner are among the Jets inactive for Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Jets announced their inactives for Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons. Mekhi Becton is back and will return to his left tackle position. Billy Turner is among those inactive as Carter Warren will get the start at right tackle.

Also back to being inactive is wide receiver Randall Cobb, who was active last week with the Jets benching Allen Lazard for a week. With Lazard back in action, Cobb goes back to the bench.

The full list of inactives for the Jets are as follows:

– WR Randall Cobb
– OL Billy Turner
– OL Austin Deculus
– DE Carl Lawson
– LB Zaire Barnes
– CB Bryce Hall
– QB Zach Wilson (emergency third quarterback)

Jets Week 11 inactives: Michael Carter II out vs. Bills

Jets Week 11 inactives: Michael Carter II out vs. Bills

The Jets released one Michael Carter a few days ago and now will be without the other for Week 11 against the Buffalo Bills.

Nickel cornerback Michael Carter II is among the inactives Sunday. Carter was a late addition to the injury report with a hamstring injury and was questionable for Sunday. He is now officially out. Look for Brandin Echols to step in at the slot corner position in place of Carter.

The rest of the Jets’ inactives:

WR Randall Cobb
LB Sam Eguavoen
OL Billy Turner
LB Chazz Surratt
DL Carl Lawson
OL Austin Deculus

The Jets are indeed starting to go a bit younger Sunday. Israel Abanikanda and Jason Brownlee are both active Sunday and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Jets start using Jeremy Ruckert more as well.

But on a day where the Jets really could use all hands on deck as they look for the season sweep of Buffalo, not having Carter in the defensive backfield will certainly sting.

Jets Week 10 inactives: Will McDonald out, makes room for Carl Lawson

Jets Week 10 inactives: Will McDonald out, makes room for Carl Lawson

The inactives are out for the New York Jets in Week 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders. It was already known that Billy Turner would be due to his injured finger. Duane Brown was ruled out as well, but he hasn’t been activated from injured reserve yet.

The player that was the biggest question mark this week was defensive end Will McDonald. The first-round pick suffered an ankle injury this week and missed practice Friday. He was listed as questionable and was officially deemed inactive for Sunday. As a result, Carl Lawson is back in the rotation.

Here are your inactives for the Jets for Week 10.

Jets’ Randall Cobb fined for dirty hit on Giants’ Bobby McCain

The NFL has fined Jets wide receiver Randall Cobb nearly $14,000 for his illegal and dirty hit on New York Giants safety Bobby McCain.

From the very instant it happened, Aiyda Ghahramani, the wife of New York Jets wide receiver Randall Cobb, knew a fine was coming.

“That was a great block, I thought,” Ghahramani said laughing. “Probably get a fine here in the mail soon.”

Although both Ghahramani and Cobb, who was laughing in the huddle with Aaron Rodgers, thought it was funny, New York Giants safety Bobby McCain had to exit the game with a concussion due to the dirty hit.

The NFL didn’t find the illegal hit, for which Cobb was penalized, nearly as funny as the Jets duo or Ghahramani. They slapped the veteran with a near-$14,000 fine for the outlawed blindside block late this week.

The hit led to an exchange between Rodgers and Giants linebacker Jihad Ward that has gone back and forth for nearly a week.

The two had to be separated during the game and that exchange was shown, in part, on HBO’s Hard Knocks. Despite video evidence, Rodgers claims Ward was lying when he said the quarterback and Cobb were laughing about the hit in the huddle.

“I think he’s making (expletive) up,” Rodgers said, via Connor Hughes of SNY.

The league office ultimately saw (and heard) what Ward did and decided to levy a fine on Cobb.

Neither Rodgers nor Ward were fined for their onfield exchange.

Randall Cobb fined for hit on Giants safety Bobby McCain

Randall Cobb fined for the hit on Bobby McCain.

The hit heard around the world — or at least highlighted on Hard Knocks — just made Randall Cobb’s wallet a little lighter.

The Jets wide receiver was hit with a fine of $13,889 for his hit on Giants safety Bobby McCain during their preseason meeting, a hit that put McCain in the concussion protocol and caused Giants linebacker Jihad Ward to believe Cobb and quarterback Aaron Rodgers were laughing at McCain and the hit in the huddle. That started the budding feud between Rodgers and Ward that saw Rodgers call Ward a liar.

“He thought we were laughing at his teammate? That never happened,” Rodgers said earlier this week, via ESPN. “That never happened and I think he’s making (expletive) up. I don’t care.”

Whether they were laughing or not, Cobb now has to fork over some money as a result of his hit. So not only did he hear it — even if jokingly — from Rodgers, he now has heard about it from the league.

Randall Cobb and Aaron Rodgers joke about preseason blindside hit in Hard Knocks preview clip

“Cobb, he lost all his (expletive) training camp money.”

Tuesday brings episode No. 4 of Hard Knocks with the New York Jets at 10om ET on HBO. NFL Films shared a preview clip on X that focuses on wide receiver Randall Cobb. It was a clip of his blindside hit penalty in the preseason finale against the New York Giants and his wife saying they’ll expect a fine in the mail.

Cobb got back to the huddle and joked with quarterback Aaron Rodgers about the time.

“Cobb, he lost all his (expletive) training camp money,” Rodgers said in the huddle after the play.

“My bad, man,” Cobb replied.

“What are you doing, bro? This ain’t 2014,” Rodgers said.

“I forgot,” Cobb said. “I blacked out.”

This is just another example of the type of close relationship Rodgers and Cobb have and we’ll see more of the relationship as Hard Knocks continues and throughout the season as Cobb starts to take on more of a role in the slot and overall in the offense with Corey Davis now out of football.

How Corey Davis’ retirement affects the Jets’ WR depth chart

Corey Davis announced his retirement from the NFL and his departure certainly changes the outlook of the Jets’ depth chart at WR.

Corey Davis has been away from the New York Jets in recent weeks and the veteran wideout announced on Wednesday that he was stepping away from football at 28 years old. While we wish the best for Davis moving forward, his departure does alter the outlook of the Jets’ depth chart at the wide receiver position.

Entering the 2023 season, Davis was in the final year of a three-year, $37.5 million deal that he signed with the Jets in free agency ahead of the 2021 season. Even though the Jets brought in Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, and Randall Cobb this offseason, Davis was still slated to have a role in the offense after the team elected to keep him around.

Davis is a versatile wideout who can contribute through the air and as a run blocker, so he would’ve seen the field a decent amount despite the new additions. But with Davis now out of the picture, the roles for certain players will change in 2023.

Garrett Wilson’s role in the offense doesn’t drastically change as he was expected to be the go-to option for Rodgers regardless of the new weapons in the offense. While Lazard signed a contract that indicated he’d have a definitive role in the offense already, he’ll certainly relied upon even more on the field because of his run-blocking ability and experience with Rodgers.

Hardman and Cobb figure to rotate as the No. 3 wide receiver in the offense behind Wilson and Lazard. Who Davis’ exit really affects are the guys who are competing for roster spots. Players like Jason Brownlee, Xavier Gipson and Malik Taylor now have better odds of making the 53-man roster unless the Jets look to improve at the position when other teams are making roster cuts.

Davis was never going to have an extremely prominent role in the offense with a crowded group of pass catchers on the Jets this season. That being said, the depth chart is now shaping up to potentially be Wilson, Lazard, Hardman, and Cobb with Brownlee, Gipson and Taylor seeming like the most likely candidates to make the roster with Davis now gone.

Randall Cobb’s Hard Knocks speech made Aaron Rodgers sound like the boogeyman to his Jets WRs

The Jets’ receivers better not step out of line. Or else.

Like most great quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers has a reputation for holding his playmakers to an almost impossibly high standard. In particular, towards the latter years of his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers was notorious for dressing down just about every green-and-gold playmaker sans Davante Adams.

And it seems like nothing has changed with the New York Jets — for the worse.

During a key sequence of the latest episode of Hard Knocks, veteran receiver Randall Cobb spoke to the Jets’ young receiver room. As a Rodgers favorite for a decade in Green Bay, Cobb knows how the signal caller approaches practice better than anyone. He knows how to make Rodgers happy. And he knows how to put him on edge, too.

So, Cobb issued a stark warning to the Jets’ outside playmakers about attending to details, in turn making Rodgers sound like some kind of horror movie monster:

I’m gonna be honest. I wouldn’t be encouraged if I was a Jets fan watching this clip.

Part of the problem with Rodgers’ latter years in Green Bay was that he refused to trust other receivers, almost to the point of stubbornness. He wouldn’t have force-fed Davante Adams over 300 targets from 2020-2021 if he believed in other Packers players. And such an insistence made Green Bay’s offense easier to game-plan for. Focus on Adams, and suddenly, the Packers’ attack felt extremely limited.

It’s too early to make any definitive declarations, but a similar situation could be boiling with Gang Green. Based on other Hard Knocks sequences, Rodgers appears to already be developing quite a rapport with sophomore receiver Garrett Wilson. In fact, during the latest episode, Rodgers called Wilson “special” on multiple occasions, suggesting he’ll (rightfully) be his go-to guy.

The concern is whether Rodgers looks Wilson’s way almost too much. If the Jets will prevail in a logjam of an AFC, they’ll need a balanced offensive approach. They’ll need to keep defenses on their toes with every weapon at their disposal. They can’t succeed if Rodgers fixates on Wilson to the point that he starts ignoring his other options. As much as the onus is on the Jets receivers to keep Rodgers happy and earn his trust, it’s on him to mellow out and perhaps give his teammates a little more leeway.

The success of the Jets’ 2023 campaign could depend on it.

Jets activating Randall Cobb off PUP Sunday

Randall Cobb returning to practice

Aaron Rodgers will get one of his buddies back at practice Sunday as the Jets are activating WR Randall Cobb off the Physically Unable to Perform list, per Jordan Schultz.

Cobb is the second player to have been cleared off the PUP list after tight end C.J. Uzomah. RB Breece Hall, DB Jarrick Bernard-Converse and OT Duane Brown are still on the list but can be removed at any time.

Cobb signed with the Jets in May, about a month after Rodgers came to town, joining a list of former Packers that came over to New York. He’ll be in the mix for one of the last spots on the receiver depth chart behind Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman.
