Report: Rocket Mortgage ends deal with Bryson DeChambeau over LIV Golf

DeChambeau won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2020.

Rocket Mortgage, headquartered in Detroit and the title sponsor of the PGA Tour event at the Detroit Golf Club, has ended its relationship with Bryson DeChambeau, who plans to play in the new Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series.

According to ESPN, Rocket Mortgage spokesperson Robert Emerson said the move is effective immediately.

The PGA Tour announced Thursday the 17 golfers playing in this week’s inaugural LIV event in London have been indefinitely suspended. DeChambeau is not in that number but is scheduled to play in the LIV event in the first weekend in July in Oregon, his agent told Golfweek on Wednesday.

The fourth annual Rocket Mortgage Classic, which DeChambeau won in 2020 and became a pitchman for the company soon after, is scheduled for the final weekend in July.

On Wednesday, the Golf Association of Michigan sent emails out to people announcing tickets were available for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, with DeChambeau as the cover person for the promotion.

The Public Investment Fund (PIF), the sovereign wealth investment fund of Saudi Arabia and one of the largest in the world, has backed and is financing LIV Golf Investments, the parent company of LIV Golf. As the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman is the head of the PIF. According to a declassified U.S. intelligence report released in February 2021, Salman approved an operation “to capture or kill” Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi inside a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on Oct. 2, 2018.

The Saudi government is accused of other human rights violations and has invested in Western athletic opportunities in an apparent attempt to improve its image, a practice known as “sportswashing.”

Players like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson have reportedly agreed to nine-figure deals to play in the LIV events — aside from the prize money available — which far exceeds what players make on the PGA Tour. Reigning U.S. Amateur champion and former Michigan State golfer James Piot is also signed up for the new circuit.

It’s not clear how much DeChambeau has been offered.

Reports have surfaced that Rickie Fowler, whose relationship with Rocket Mortgage dates back further than DeChambeau’s, is considering a jump to the LIV tour.

Rocket Mortgage Classic ‘will welcome fans’ back to Detroit Golf Club

The PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic announced Wednesday that it will have fans in attendance.

The PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic announced Wednesday that it will have fans in attendance when the tournament tees off in late June at Detroit Golf Club.

“Based on the most recent order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services regarding Coronavirus policies for outdoor events, we are pleased to announce that the Rocket Mortgage Classic will welcome fans at Detroit Golf Club, June 28-July 4,” tournament executive director Jason Langwell said in a released statement.

More information about general admission tickets will be available soon, according to the statement.

For now, the only ticket option is a $313 tax-deductible donation for two tickets to the “Faces of Area 313” events scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of tournament week.

The statement did not outline how many total fans will be allowed at the tournament, which was held last year without fans because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

[vertical-gallery id=778052082]

“We will continue to work with state and local health officials to create a safe and enjoyable experience for our fans,” Langwell said.

In a new state health department order, effective Thursday, golf tournaments can host more than 1,000 people “so long as they create and post a safety plan consistent with the MDHHS Large Outdoor Even Guidance, and no more than 20 persons per 1,000 square feet are gathered in any space available to patrons.”

Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion and is scheduled to headline the field, along with major champions Jason Day and Bubba Watson, and Rickie Fowler and Harold Varner III.

J.T. Poston (-118) vs. Kevin Na

Poston, who finished T-11 here last year, is in a pick’em with Na, who debuts at this event. Na finished fifth last week at the Travelers Championship, while Poston missed the cut after finishing T-8 at the RBC Heritage and T-10 at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Trust his modest experience here to spark a return to form.

Sungjae Im vs. Tony Finau (-106)

Both golfers have disappointed in stronger fields the last two weeks. Finau ranks first in this field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and eighth in SG: Approach over everyone’s last 50 rounds, according to Fantasy National, and he’s a value as a slight underdog in this matchup.

2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Placing bets

Top 5: Cameron Tringale (+2800)

Tringale will need to repeat last year’s finish in Detroit despite the significantly stronger field in attendance. He was second among those who made the cut with 2.02 SG: Tee-to-Green per round last year, according to Data Golf, while finishing eight shots off the lead at minus-17. He ranks fourth overall by my stat model this week.

Who will the best player from the Rest of The World be? Hideki Matsuyama (+400)

Matsuyama is getting much better odds here than he is for Top Asian Player (+125), despite his top competition being Im in both pools. Matsuyama topped Im with a T-13 to T-21 finish at Detroit Golf Club in 2019. He ranks third in SG: Tee-to-Green, and ninth in SG: Approach and Bogey Avoidance.

Top South African Player: Erik Van Rooyen (+220)

Van Rooyen is the best course fit with the best tee-to-green game in a pool that includes Christiaan BezuidenhoutBranden Grace and Charl Schwartzel. Top-ranked South African Louis Oosthuizen isn’t in attendance.

Top Canadian Player: Adam Hadwin (-200)

Sometimes it’s OK to eat a little chalk. At 19th in the Golfweek rankings, Hadwin is easily the top-ranked Canadian. No. 2, Corey Conners (69th), and No. 3, Mackenzie Hughes (234th), are off this week. Roger Sloan (+450) ranks 343rd.

2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic: First-round leader bets

Bryson DeChambeau (+1600)

The odds for DeChambeau to lead after Round 1 are much better than his +600 odds to win the tournament. He’s third on Tour in the 2019-20 season and first in this field with a first-round scoring average of 67.80 through 10 rounds. Plus, he has started two of his last three tournaments with an opening-round 65.

Doc Redman (+5500)

Redman was last year’s runner-up, losing by six strokes to Nate Lashley. Redman resurfaced last week with a T-11 finish at the Travelers Championship. Like DeChambeau, his first-round leader odds are much better than his tournament price of +4500. He has a scheduling advantage by being in the second group off the first tee Thursday.

Fantasy Golf Power Rankings for the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Analyzing the best fantasy golf picks for the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

[jwplayer GSXT56dF]

Detroit Golf Club hosts the second annual Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, beginning Thursday. Webb Simpson and Bryson DeChambeau highlight a slightly weaker field than golf fans have seen in the last three events, but it’s still significantly stronger than last year when Nate Lashley won by six strokes at 25-under par. Below, we look at the fantasy golf power rankings for the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Detroit Golf Club, designed by Donald Ross, measures 7,334 yards and plays to a par of 72. Simpson returns to play after withdrawing from the Travelers Championship amid COVID-19 concerns. He rose to No. 3 in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings following his win at the RBC Heritage.

Rocket Mortgage’s Super Bowl ad starring Jason Momoa finishes fifth in Ad Meter rankings

It’s rare that a lending company—albeit the largest in America—would be expected to make a huge splash in the Ad Meter rankings. They don’t sell beer, or candy, or chips, or soft drinks. And they aren’t releasing the next box-office hit. At the most, you’d expect them to cause a small ripple.

But, then again, when you have Aquaman

Rocket Mortgage will forever remember Super Bowl LIV. The Detroit-based lending company was back in the Big Game-mania this year with a spot that featured actor Jason Momoa for their campaign, “Get Comfortable.” That alone seems like a story worth remembering, but it’s merely the gameplan and the not the final drive.

Out of the 60-plus ads and trailers that were submitted, the spot ended the night as the fifth highest-rated commercial in the Ad Meter rankings.

Fifth!

You can count the number of mortgage companies that have accomplished that ranking with a closed fist. The success teetered on the unbelievable, even for an experienced Super Bowl ad veteran like Quicken Loans CMO, Casey Hurbis, who Ad Meter caught up with to talk about the big night.

“When you’ve got a lot of brands there (on Ad Meter) that are habitually in the top 10,” Hurbis noted, “to be a mortgage company—a commodity-based company and brand—that’s in the top 5 is something to be super excited about.”

When we first spoke before Super Bowl Sunday, what the actual commercial would look like was still a close secret. Instead, the company and the star of the spot had released several teasers—which did incredibly well—and as the CMO explained, “lent itself to people wondering, ‘What does it really mean for Jason Momoa to be comfortable at home? What is that going to look like?'”

The anticipation would last until the first quarter of the Super Bowl when the final product aired—a sleight of hand that took a comedic one-eighty from the teasers.

It was an epic moment for the 75 Rocket Mortgage employees gathered at the office. “It was sixty seconds of dead silence, and then an eruption of cheers,” Hubris said in awe.

But this was also a busy night, as he pointed out:

“We were activating the Rocket Mortgage Super Bowl Squares, and about five minutes before the commercial ran, there was a score. And for the first time, we were like, ‘OK. We have to pull the name, and we have to announce it.’ Then the commercial ran, and we’re celebrating, and then there was a score shortly after that.”

“Mission Control” Photo courtesy of Quicken Loans

Zero rest isn’t uncommon on this type of night for brands. But the work and effort has been the exciting part of this particular journey for Rocket Mortgage—a “partnership”, as Hurbis describes it, and learning experience. As previously mentioned, he doesn’t always believe that Super Bowl spots should be released before the actual airtime. “You can argue the pros and cons of it,” he explained. “But what this showed us was by teasing it and doing fun, engaging, leaned-in content, you can build up a lot of that buzz and anticipation, and then you show America the spot for the first time.”

(The content is still making the rounds on social media, including these two photos of the—ahem—real Jason Momoa:)

When the night finally ended all that was left were the restless hours until the Ad Meter rankings were released. “It was a late night—we didn’t wrap up until well after midnight,” Hurbis recalled. “But we woke up Sunday morning with smiles on our faces, and it’s been a great week!”

A great week, indeed, one that seems to be continuing.

“People are coming up to Jason and telling him how funny it was and how much they enjoyed the commercial,” Hubris said of Momoa—who reached out to the CMO Sunday night and shared in the joy of how well the spot turned out and has since continued to post behind-the-scenes footage.

“It’s humbling,” Hurbis also added, now having a few days to let the rush of it all settle. “We had a great campaign and a great partner to bring it life, and we’re excited that America affirmed that—the amount of positive sentiment we have is overwhelming.”

It was an impressive showing for Rocket Mortgage, the excitement of the commercial’s success resonated in each answer Hurbis gave. And rightfully so. But that doesn’t mean it’s one-and-done for him or the hard-working team. We ended the conversation by chatting about the future, the “Get Comfortable” campaign, and what it means for Rocket Mortgage.

Hurbis replied: “When you’re America’s largest lender, you’re right back to work and getting ready for the next exciting project.”

With the company’s success in this year’s Ad Meter, that type of forward brand momentum would be expected.

The top 5 Super Bowl LIV ads, according to Ad Meter

Super Bowl LIV is in the books, ending with a big win for the Kanas City Chiefs. Now, only one more thing remains to be decided—what ad took home the top spot in USA Today’s 2020 Ad Meter rankings?

More than a few ads submitted for voting this year were worthy of consideration, from the thoughtful to the empowering, the funny and sad, and all those surprising spots that make Super Bowl commercials so great!

Here were the top 5 based on the Ad Meter rankings:

1. Jeep: “Groundhog Day,” 7.01

Bill Murray made his first Big Game appearance in this spot for Jeep, which took a perfectly timed Super Bowl date that fell on Groundhog Day and hit it big with a twist on the classic Murray film.

2. Hyundai: “Smaht Pahk,” 6.98

Taking the second spot this year was Hyundai’s comical back and forth with Chris Evans, John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch, and David “Big Papi” Ortiz—who can’t believe the ‘smaht’ Remote Smart Parking Assist feature in the new Hyundai Sonata.

3. Google: “Loretta,” 6.77

One of the most heartfelt ads this year came in at No. 3, with Google’s “Loretta” allowing the audience to to join one man’s trip down memory lane—with a little help from Google—about the love of his life.

4. Doritos: “The Cool Ranch,” 6.62

It’s Doritos coming in at fourth place in 2020. Their spot “The Cool Ranch” featured a western showdown like we’ve never seen before—thanks in part to Lil Nas X and Sam Elliott.

5. Rocket Mortgage: “Comfortable,”

Rocket Mortgage had its best-ever Ad Meter showing, cracking the top 5 with a spot that featured actor Jason Momoa away from the spotlight like you’ve—100 percent!—never seen him before.

Quicken Loans CMO Casey Hurbis talks ‘perfect partnership’ with actor Jason Momoa in newest Rocket Mortgage campaign

When it comes to creating a Super Bowl ad, it’s easy to throw out the generalized “Go Big or Go Home” analogy. It’s a big stage-arguably the biggest-and the amount of eyes locked onto the commercials has oftentimes been the top story from Super Bowl …

When it comes to creating a Super Bowl ad, it’s easy to throw out the generalized “Go Big or Go Home” analogy. It’s a big stage—arguably the biggest—and the amount of eyes locked onto the commercials has oftentimes been the top story from Super Bowl Sunday. (See: 2019). So, understandably, when creating a campaign, the idea of going big makes sense.

But when you’re Rocket Mortgage, the largest mortgage lender in America, and you get Jason Momoa, one of the largest actors (literally and in Hollywood star power) to be in your spot for this Sunday’s game…well, that provides an interesting update to the terminology.

The Detroit-based lending company is back in the Super Bowl ad lineup this year with a spot that ties into a new campaign called “Get Comfortable.” The concept, as Quicken Loans CMO Casey Hurbis explained to USA Today’s Ad Meter, is simple: “We want people to be as comfortable financing a home as they are living in it.”

How they accomplished creating the delivery of that message for the massive audience on Sunday is an interesting tale. It began over this past summer. The team started looking at different ideas, beginning the creative process, and one particular concept quickly rose to the top. And with that winning concept, there was one person who came to mind.

“It was with Jason!” Hurbis enthusiastically recalled, an exclamatory prompt associated with a no-brainer.

The exciting part of that revelation, however, was the feeling was mutual. Never one to shy away from the creative process, the feedback from the Hollywood star wasn’t just a yes, followed by a signature on the dotted line. Instead, the overall excitement for the campaign grew into a partnership. “He was part of the creative development with us,” Hurbis explained.

Understanding how the process goes for creating these commercials is never an exact science, but it doesn’t hurt to have someone experienced like Casey Hurbis. He’s been part of five Super Bowl campaigns, including Rocket Mortgage’s 2018 ad with Keegan Michael Key (that finished 11th in the Ad Meter Rankings that year). He took that propitious momentum and allowed it to flow into the “next” creative step for the company, and by December, production was set to shoot the 2020 Super Bowl commercial—which would be a first for the talented actor.

But would it be?

The answer to that is not as simple. Casey, who still holds true to “old school thought” as he puts it , doesn’t like to release the full spot until the night of the game. But within the tight timeframe of production and the small window to tell the story in the actual ad, came extra footage that might have never seen the light of day, cutting-room material. And in a social media-driven world that seemed like an opportunity—and it wasn’t missed.

Momoa liked the daily cuts so much, he deiced to start sending out funny tidbits on his social media. The engagement from his 14.6 million followers has grown mightily, well into the 10,000s. As Hurbis noted, “It showed just how great it’s been, this whole concept of ‘getting comfortable at home’—it’s a really fun and engaging way to show how Jason can be, away from the camera and expectations when he’s at home.”

And Jason Momoa, if the several teasers released by Rocket Mortgage are any small indication, is certainly fun at home.

“It was a hard sprint at the end,” admitted Hurbis. “But having the power of Jason and (Quicken Loan’s) brands together, just knowing the high level of content we did, we knew that having him doing his first commercial ever, we’d be able to build a lot of momentum around that. And we’re excited to bring not only the spot in the Super Bowl, but the campaign to life.”

Again, that feeling is mutual, as Jason Momoa added: “People are going to be blown away by the Super Bowl commercial. The creative was awesome, and we all worked together to make it hysterical. I got to poke fun at myself a bit, as did my wife, and we had a blast. The spot made us laugh, and it’s going to make America laugh too. I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks.”

So, in this case, it’s Go Big and Go home.
