Tiger Woods returns to PGA Tour tournament play for the first time since mid-February this week at the 2020 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. He’ll attempt to win for a record-setting 83rd time on the PGA Tour at one of six tournaments he has won a minimum of five times. Below, we’ll look at Tiger Woods’ betting odds to win the 2020 Memorial Tournament and make our picks for the most profitable prop bets centered him this week.

Woods enters the week ranked 25th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings. Just two of the top 25 aren’t included in the star-studded field at Jack Nicklaus’ tournament this week. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy, 2019 Memorial champ Patrick Cantlay, 2020 Workday Charity Open champ Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau are among them.

Golf fans last saw Woods at The Match: Champions for Charity with Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. His irons seemed to be in top form as he battled through the pouring rain.

It’s quite fitting that Woods has another chance to set the PGA Tour’s wins record with a sixth win at a tournament founded by Nicklaus on a course the Golden Bear designed. Tiger’s winning scores have ranged from minus-9 (2012) to minus-19 (2000).

Tiger won this event five times from 1999 to 2012. He tied for ninth last year, finishing 10 shots back at 9-under par. This was his lone tournament in between a missed cut at the 2019 PGA Championship and the US Open.

He’s likely using this week’s event as his final tune-up for the 2020 PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park from Aug. 6-9.

Woods is ranked 23rd in the field by the Golfweek rankings, but he shares the ninth-best odds to win at +2500 with Hideki Matsuyama, Webb Simpson and Xander Schauffele.

There isn’t much value in backing Tiger, especially compared to the fourth-ranked and two-time 2020 winner Simpson. Still, golf fans will want a piece of Big Cat as he chases down history. Sprinkle a small wager on Tiger to win the Memorial and hedge with other prop bets.

Best props on Tiger Woods at the Memorial Tournament

To finish in the top 10: +260

Woods is priced right for a top-10 finish with the 10th-best odds reflecting his odds to win the tournament. A $10 wager here would return a profit of $26, as he looks to replicate last season’s T-9 finish.

He tied for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open in his first tournament of 2020 before finishing just 68th at The Genesis Invitational. Hedge against your outright bet with some insurance in this incredibly strong field.

Lowest score over 72 holes – Group C: +320

Woods is the second favorite in a group with Matsuyama, Daniel Berger, Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland. Matsuyama won here in 2014 and has two top-10 finishes since. Berger won the Charles Schwab Challenge in the PGA Tour’s restart. Woodland finished T-5 last week, and Fowler finished T-22 at this same venue.

Woods has better odds to win the tournament than all but Matsuyama from this group. There’s value here when removing the top-8 favorites from the pool.

Jon Rahm fronts the strong 156-man field as the No. 2 golfer in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings. Patrick Cantlay (-118) vs. Hideki Matsuyama

Cantlay won the 2019 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village while Matsuyama finished sixth. The two are priced at +1500 and +1600, respectively, to win the tournament, making Cantlay a slight favorite in this matchup.

Cantlay has gained an average of 3.23 strokes across 12 career rounds at Muirfield Village to lead the field this week, according to Data Golf. Matsuyama tied for 21st in a weaker field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week, while Cantlay tied for 11th at the Travelers Championship in his only event since play resumed.

Rickie Fowler vs. Justin Rose (-125)

Fowler’s T-12 finish last week was his best result since returning to play after he missed the cut in his first two events. Rose took a week off following a missed cut at the Travelers, but had previously tied for 14th at the RBC Heritage and third at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Rose has averaged 2.39 strokes gained per round across 46 rounds played here.

2020 Workday Charity Open: Placing bets

Top 10: Tom Hoge (+1200)

Hoge has missed the cut in three of four events since returning to play, but returns to a course where he last finished T-13 in 2018. He ranks fifth in SG: Approach and second in Proximity from 175-200 Yards across everyone’s last 50 rounds on courses over 7,400 yards in length, according to Fantasy National.

Top European: Justin Rose (+500)

Rose is the third favorite behind Jon Rahm (+240) and Viktor Hovland (+400) in this group. Rose won the Memorial in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2008 and 2015, and showed great form in his first two events back.

Top Canadian Player: Adam Hadwin (+138)

We cashed this bet on Hadwin at a chalky -200 last week as he finished T-4 while gaining 1.37 strokes tee-to-green, to accompany his usually strong putter. His odds have risen considerably this week with Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes back in the field as two of the next best three Canadians, but Hadwin is still in the best form.

2020 Workday Charity Open: First-round leader bet

Patrick Cantlay (+2800)

As noted above, Cantlay is just +1500 to win this event outright and is a much more profitable play to lead after Round 1 in his defense of Muirfield Village. He leads the PGA Tour with a first-round scoring average of 67.33 through six rounds in the 2019-20 season. His 5-under 65 in the final round of the Travelers was his best round since returning to play.

Poston, who finished T-11 here last year, is in a pick’em with Na, who debuts at this event. Na finished fifth last week at the Travelers Championship, while Poston missed the cut after finishing T-8 at the RBC Heritage and T-10 at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Trust his modest experience here to spark a return to form.

Sungjae Im vs. Tony Finau (-106)

Both golfers have disappointed in stronger fields the last two weeks. Finau ranks first in this field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and eighth in SG: Approach over everyone’s last 50 rounds, according to Fantasy National, and he’s a value as a slight underdog in this matchup.

2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Placing bets

Top 5: Cameron Tringale (+2800)

Tringale will need to repeat last year’s finish in Detroit despite the significantly stronger field in attendance. He was second among those who made the cut with 2.02 SG: Tee-to-Green per round last year, according to Data Golf, while finishing eight shots off the lead at minus-17. He ranks fourth overall by my stat model this week.

Who will the best player from the Rest of The World be? Hideki Matsuyama (+400)

Matsuyama is getting much better odds here than he is for Top Asian Player (+125), despite his top competition being Im in both pools. Matsuyama topped Im with a T-13 to T-21 finish at Detroit Golf Club in 2019. He ranks third in SG: Tee-to-Green, and ninth in SG: Approach and Bogey Avoidance.

Top South African Player: Erik Van Rooyen (+220)

Van Rooyen is the best course fit with the best tee-to-green game in a pool that includes Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Branden Grace and Charl Schwartzel. Top-ranked South African Louis Oosthuizen isn’t in attendance.

Top Canadian Player: Adam Hadwin (-200)

Sometimes it’s OK to eat a little chalk. At 19th in the Golfweek rankings, Hadwin is easily the top-ranked Canadian. No. 2, Corey Conners (69th), and No. 3, Mackenzie Hughes (234th), are off this week. Roger Sloan (+450) ranks 343rd.

2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic: First-round leader bets

Bryson DeChambeau (+1600)

The odds for DeChambeau to lead after Round 1 are much better than his +600 odds to win the tournament. He’s third on Tour in the 2019-20 season and first in this field with a first-round scoring average of 67.80 through 10 rounds. Plus, he has started two of his last three tournaments with an opening-round 65.

Doc Redman (+5500)

Redman was last year’s runner-up, losing by six strokes to Nate Lashley. Redman resurfaced last week with a T-11 finish at the Travelers Championship. Like DeChambeau, his first-round leader odds are much better than his tournament price of +4500. He has a scheduling advantage by being in the second group off the first tee Thursday.

Patrick Reed vs. Webb Simpson (-118)

Simpson has a better history at Harbour Town with a T-5 in 2018 and two other top 20s in the last three years, while Reed hasn’t played here since a missed cut in 2015. Simpson also ranks third in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting on Bermuda greens. He looks to bounce back from a missed cut last week.

Xander Schauffele vs. Collin Morikawa (+115)

Morikawa has good value at plus-money coming off a runner-up finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He makes his debut at Harbour Town, but that situation hasn’t been an issue for him yet as he remains without a missed cut as a professional.

Gary Woodland (-133) vs. Jordan Spieth

Spieth received a lot more camera time than Woodland last week. The reigning US Open champion finished alone in ninth place, while Spieth was part of a large group at T-10. Play it safe with the more reliable Woodland. Spieth won’t have the same room for error off the tee this week and Woodland ranks 14th in the field in SG: Off the Tee.

2020 RBC Heritage: Placing bets

Top 5: Sam Burns (+4500)

Burns finished alone in ninth at the 2019 RBC Heritage. He ranks fifth in this field in SG: Putting on Bermuda greens.

Top 10: Rory Sabbatini (+800)

Sabbatini was T-14 last week and he was T-10 here in 2019. He can avoid bogeys and will have plenty of scoring opportunities on the par 5s.

Lowest score Group D: Branden Grace (+400)

Grace’s lone PGA Tour victory to date came at the 2016 RBC Heritage. He returned to the European Tour’s winner’s circle for the ninth time at the South African Open in mid-January. He opened the Charles Schwab Challenge with three straight rounds of 66 before firing a Sunday 73 to finish T-19.

Leader after 1st round: Luke Donald (+10000)

Donald, a former world No. 1, had runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2017 while opening with a 65 and 66, respectively. He followed them up with a missed cut in 2018 and a T-33 in 2019, but he’s still among the best Bermuda putters in the field

Rickie Fowler vs. Marc Leishman (+100)

Current form goes out the window this week following a long interruption in the 2019-20 PGA Tour season, but Leishman still needs to be given at least somewhat of an edge. He won the Farmers Insurance Open and finished second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year, both in stacked fields. Fowler missed the cut in two of six 2020 events.

Matthew Fitzpatrick vs. Justin Rose (+110)

Rose, a short-game wiz, won this event in 2018. Fitzpatrick finished just T-64 last year in his only career appearance at Colonial. Rose also has a significant advantage in putting on Bentgrass greens.

Charles Schwab Challenge: Tournament specials

Leader after 1st round: Scottie Scheffler (+5000)

Scheffler ranks third on Tour this season with a first-round scoring average of 68.15 through 13 rounds. He has soared into 45th in the OWGR and remained busy during the break while winning a charity event at Maridoe Golf Club. He’s just +4000 to win this event outright.

Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy all to make the cut: +140

Getting the top three golfers in the world to all make the cut at plus-money is a bargain in any event. Even in a loaded field, they’re safe bets to be playing Saturday.

Wire to wire winner: +1200

This is a good hedge against the low outright odds for all the top players in the world. A number of golfers in this loaded field have the ability to go the distance, especially without fans permitted on the course.

2020 Players Championship: Leader after Round 1

Scottie Scheffler (+8000)

Scheffler is making his Players Championship debut, but the 2019 Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year has made a seamless transition to the PGA Tour. He has missed the cut in just two of 13 events since A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, and he has four top 10s in that time, along with a T-15 finish last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

He’s third on Tour in the 2019-20 season in Round 1 scoring average at 68.15. His 13 measured rounds are more than anyone else in the top five. The rookie scores low on short courses and he doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses right now.

Nick Taylor (+12500)

Taylor tied for 16th here last year for his best result at The Players, and he’ll make his first appearance as a PGA Tour champion following his breakout win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Canadian ranks 12th on Tour this year in Round 1 scoring average, and he finished 2019 ranked 16th. He opened with a first-round 73 last year, but he scored in the 60s each of the final three rounds.

2020 Players Championship: 3-ball match

Tyrrell Hatton/Paul Casey (+160)/Max Homa

Casey is the first-round bet to back in this trio. Hatton is coming off a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but missed the cut at this event each of the last two years. Homa will be making his TPC Sawgrass debut. Casey missed the cut last year, but the veteran had a T-22 in 2017 and a T-23 in 2016. He’s the safest bet in this trio with the second-best odds.

Viktor Hovland/Collin Morikawa (+125)/Matthew Wolff

All three youngsters are making their professional debuts at TPC Sawgrass, but all three already have a win in their young PGA Tour careers. Wolff finished outside the top 50 in each of his last two events, and Hovland has an MC and a T-42 in two events since winning the Puerto Rico Open. Morikawa hasn’t missed a cut in 21 events as a pro.

2020 Players Championship: Tournament head-to-head

Tommy Fleetwood (-112) vs. Dustin Johnson

Johnson has slipped to No. 9 in the Golfweek world rankings, while Fleetwood enters the week sixth following a third-place finish at The Honda Classic, though he missed the cut last week. No one in the field with a minimum of 10 rounds played at TPC Sawgrass has gained more strokes per round than Fleetwood’s 2.34, according to Data Golf.

Xander Schauffele vs. Webb Simpson (-112)

Simpson, the 2018 Players champion, gets paired up against Schauffele for the tournament head-to-head. Schauffele debuted with a T-2 in 2018, but he missed the cut in his follow-up attempt last year. Simpson hasn’t played since a disappointing T-61 finish at the WGC-Mexico Championship, but he already has a win in 2020 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open to cap a stretch of five straight top 10s.

He didn’t play in 1998 (when the Internationals got their lone win in the event, also in Melbourne), but he has won both the Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship and has spoken highly of wanting to win at the famed Royal Melbourne as a potential career highlight.

Who will score the most points for the USA? Patrick Reed (+900)

Expect the best from Reed, who has excelled in the Ryder Cup format against Europe, and in the 2017 Presidents Cup. He’s coming off another controversy at last week’s Hero World Challenge in which he was penalized two strokes for improving his line of play in a waste bunker.
