2022 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play odds, best bets and PGA Tour picks

With four straight top 20s entering the week, can Max Homa work his way through group 8?

Can you smell that? How ’bout feel it? Yes, the first men’s major championship of the year is within shouting distance, and it’s going to be hard to wait another two weeks for the Masters.

But before the players take that special drive down Magnolia Lane, it’s time to head to Austin, Texas, for the WGC-Dell Match Play.

Several of the game’s biggest names, including Rory McIlroy, Sam Burns, and recent Players champion Cameron Smith, are not in the field this week. However, after a layoff stemming back to the Farmers Insurance Open, Bryson DeChambeau is one of the 64 names in this week’s March Madness type bracket.

Golf course: Yardage book for Austin Country Club

Key statistics

Strokes Gained: Approach: Pete Dye design? It’s probably good to start with iron play.

Putting: Bermuda: There’s a reason why Kevin Kisner seems to reach the final four of this event every year. When you can consistently make putts that your opponent thinks you’re gonna miss, it’s demoralizing.

Joel Dahmen, Pat Perez among sleeper picks to win the 2022 Valspar Championship

Among all the big names, there are several sleepers to keep an eye on in Tampa.

After a wild week in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at the Players, the PGA Tour heads to Tampa for the Valspar Championship.

Sam Burns enters the week as the defending champion and sits at +2000.

Despite a late finish at TPC Sawgrass, some of the best players in the world are still in the field to tee it up at the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort.

Justin Thomas, Viktor Hovland, and Collin Morikawa all sit at +1000 to win.

Despite numerous big names, there are several players further down the odds list that have a great chance of hoisting the hardware come Sunday afternoon (or at least we can hope it’ll be Sunday afternoon).

Scottie Scheffler is a budding superstar, behind the scenes of a PGA Tour Pro-Am, and a Players Championship preview

This week on the Twilight 9 podcast: Scottie Scheffler’s gutsy win, Rory McIlroy’s comments, and a look at the Players Championship.

People love to throw around the phrases “open the flood gates” and “once he gets that first win, watch out.” The same things were said about Scottie Scheffler after his first PGA Tour win at the WM Phoenix Open a few weeks ago. But after his performance at Bay Hill, the flood gates may be officially open.

Scheffler made gutsy par after gutsy par down the stretch at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and eventually slipped on the famous red cardigan with a winning score of 5 under. Yup, Bay Hill was a monster on the weekend. But, it was a challenge Scheffler faced head-on, and because of that, is now a two-time Tour winner.

This week on the Twilight 9 podcast, Andy and I dive into the week in Orlando and discuss comments Rory McIlroy made after Sunday’s final round about course set up and the games best maybe not returning to Arnie’s place.

We also discuss Andy’s experience playing in the Wednesday Pro-Am at Bay Hill and how nervous he was to hit his first tee shot in front of Jason Kokrak, his playing partner for the day.

A favorite to bet, fade, and consider at the 2022 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass

Can Daniel Berger rebound from a tough finish at the Honda Classic this week at TPC Sawgrass?

This week in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, there are a plethora of big-name players ready to compete for the title at the 2022 Players Championship. Jon Rahm, the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking, is the favorite among them all at TPC Sawgrass sitting at +1200. Justin Thomas, the event’s defending champion, follows closely behind at +1300 with

Pete Dye’s Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass will play as a par 72 this week measuring 7,256 yards.

Among all the favorites this week in the field comprised of 46 of the world’s top-50, here are players to bet on, to fade, and to consider for your betting cards.

Past champion Adam Scott among sleepers to win the 2022 Players Championship

Can the Aussie win for the first time in over two years?

The PGA Tour is in Ponta Vedra Beach, Florida, for one of, if not the, biggest non-major of the year. The best players in the world, aside from Bryson DeChambeau who withdrew from the field Sunday due to an injury, have descended upon TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship.

Jon Rahm, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, is the betting favorite at +1200. Rahm played in Orlando last week, eventually tying for 17th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Justin Thomas, the winner of last year’s Players, is at +1300. Thomas’ last appearance came at the Genesis Invitational where he finished solo sixth.

Despite the superstar-packed field, there are numerous players who could make a run at the title this week further down the odds list.

Twilight 9 podcast: Luke List’s first PGA Tour win, Torrey Pines delivers again, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am preview with betting outlook

Yet another week losing an outright pick in a playoff.

Busy week in the golf world. Lydia Ko gets No. 21. Luke List gets No. 1. And Riley lost another outright winner in a playoff.

Sick!

This week on the show Andy and I talk about Torrey Pines, and despite mixed feelings about the golf course, it delivers every single time the PGA Tour is there. It’s uncanny.

We also dive in on Will Zalatoris and his, let’s just say less than confident, putting stroke from inside five feet.

Then we jump into our preview for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. It’s always good to be back on the Monterey Peninsula, and not only is the PGA Tour back, but the amateurs are as well after a year hiatus due to COVID-19.

Our betting segment is loaded with players we’re targeting this week and hopefully, we can finally capitalize on an outright winner.

Sanderson Farms Championship matchups, placings and first-round leader bets

Check out the best odds at the Sanderson Farms Championship for matchups, placings and first-round leader bets.

The PGA Tour shifts back to the USA this week for the Sanderson Farms Championship and several prominent names return to the field. Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi hosts the event for the seventh straight year and has allowed for six consecutive first-time PGA Tour winners.

Below, we’ll look for the best value bets in the 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship betting odds and lines with tournament matchups, placings and first-round leader (FRL) picks and best bets.

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 9:25 a.m. ET.

Matchup bets

Denny McCarthy vs. Robby Shelton vs. Bronson Burgoon (+210)

Burgoon has the best history at Country Club of Jackson of this group with an average of 0.99 strokes gained per round across nine career rounds, according to Data Golf. McCarthy (+130) is consistently the best putter of the group, but in a Thursday 3-ball match, Burgoon just needs a strong start at a personal favorite course.

More bets: Odds, predictions, picks | Fantasy rankings

Doc Redman (-143) vs. Chez Reavie

Redman comes into the Sanderson Farms Championship with two T-3 finishes in his last three events. Reavie shared the T-3 at the Safeway Open but followed it up with a missed cut at the U.S. Open. Reavie also makes his debut in Jackson, so give the edge to Redman following a T-52 finish last year with his strong recent form.

Placing bets

Top 5: Scottie Scheffler (+250)

Scheffler is +900 to win this tournament outright so the value isn’t all that much worse with a wider margin of insurance. He has three top-5 finishes in his last four events but hasn’t played since the Tour Championship after being forced to withdraw from the U.S. Open following a positive COVID-19 test.

Top 10: Sam Burns (+300)

Burns is fifth by the outright odds at +2500. He’s one of many in the field looking for his first PGA Tour win and should be in contention on Sunday against the relatively weak competition. He tied for third in this event in 2018 but slipped to T-45 last year.

Top Canadian: Nick Taylor (+300)

Taylor was the inaugural winner at Country Club of Jackson in 2014. He has played sparingly since the PGA Tour’s mid-June restart and has missed the cut in three of his last five events. Conners hasn’t been much better, however, and is coming off a missed cut in an even weaker field at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. Side with Taylor’s experience with both golfers struggling.

First-round leader bet

Nick Taylor (+8000)

Double down on Taylor at the site of his first of two PGA Tour wins. He has 18 career rounds played here with an average of 0.95 strokes gained per round. He won last year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am but missed the cut in four of his next eight events on the 2019-20 schedule.

He’s routinely among the PGA Tour leaders in first-round scoring average and will go off the first tee Thursday morning at 8:11 a.m. ET. Taylor missed the cut last year but broke 70 in the first round of each of his previous four appearances in this event.

Phil Mickelson on U.S. Open wager with potential $3.375M payout: ‘I’m going to play hard for him’

Phil Mickelson is 75-1 to win the U.S. Open next week, but that didn’t stop a fan from making an outrageous bet on him to win.

Phil Mickelson has a fan who has pushed, if not all his chips, a good chunk of them on the left-hander to win the 120th U.S. Open next week at Winged Foot Golf Club.

On Thursday, a bettor placed a $45,000 wager on Mickelson to win at 75/1 (+7500) odds at one of William Hill’s Southern Nevada Sports Books. If Mickelson claims his sixth major, and first U.S. Open after six heart-breaking runner-up finishes on Sunday, September 20, the bettor would reap a net win of $3,375,000. The wager represents the second-largest liability for an individual golf wager place in the U.S. in William Hill history.

When informed of the wager after his second round at the Safeway Open, Mickelson said, “I’m going to play hard for him but play hard for me first. I hope we both come out winners.”

Later, Mickelson hopped on his Twitter feed and posted the following: “Heard someone place 45k on me to win the open at 75-1 (pays 3.3 mil) Hoping for both of us I have a 3 shot lead on 18 tee.”

Mickelson’s self-deprecating humor is a reference to his double bogey at the final hole at Winged Foot in 2006, which blew his one-stroke lead and led to his fourth of six second-place finishes at the U.S. Open.

Mickelson also relied on humor to downplay one of golf’s most memorable collapses in a commercial for a Callaway Golf promotion in which he ends the ad saying, “When have I ever let you down at Winged Foot?”

Mickelson, 50, recently won his debut on the PGA Tour Champions and finished T-2 at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He would become the oldest player to win a major if he were to do so.

2020 Barracuda Championship odds, predictions, picks and PGA Tour best bets

Analyzing the golf betting odds to win the 2020 Barracuda Championship with PGA Tour betting odds, picks, predictions and best bets.

The 2020 Barracuda Championship serves as the alternate event to this week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and returns to Montreaux Golf & Country Club in Truckee, Calif. Below, we look at the BetMGM outright betting odds, and make our PGA Tour picks and best bets for the Barracuda Championship.

Note: This tournament uses Modified Stableford scoring. Collin Morikawa and Andrew Putnam won in 2019 and 2018, respectively, with 47 points.

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday, July 27 at 1:50 p.m. ET.

Alex Noren (+2500)

Noren, a 10-time winner on the European Tour, fell just shy of his first PGA Tour victory at last week’s 3M Open. He went 5-under par in his final round but finished T-3 at minus-16 and three shots back of champion Michael Thompson.

He gained 1.71 strokes putting per round over the tournament, according to Data Golf, but was also steady on approach, off-the-tee and from tee-to-green. He was able to move to 98th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings with the performance and will try again for his first victory against an even weaker field.

Matthias Schwab (+2800)

Schwab tied for 32nd last week at minus-10 despite losing a dreadful 1.70 strokes putting per round on the putting surfaces. He led the field with 2.76 SG: Tee-to-Green per round and was second with 2.05 SG: Approach. Bank on the more repeatable swings and get him at a number much higher than he should have against this competition.

2020 Barracuda Championship Betting Picks – Tier 2

Sebastian Munoz (+6600)

Munoz tied for 48th in a strong field amid difficult conditions at the Memorial Tournament before taking last week off. He had previously missed three straight cuts following a T-28 showing at the RBC Heritage. His victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship earlier in the 2019-20 season was in a field more comparable to what he’ll face this week.

Bronson Burgoon (+8000)

Burgoon finished alone in fifth last year at minus-13 despite losing 0.44 strokes per round on the greens. He averaged 2.50 SG: Tee-to-Green over the tournament. He missed three consecutive cuts before finishing T-61 at the Workday Charity Open and T-41 last week and finally seems to be trending in the right direction.

2020 Barracuda Championship Betting Picks – Long shots

Robby Shelton (+10000)

Shelton’s price is a mystery after he fired a Sunday round of 7-under to finish T-3 at minus-16 in a stronger field last week. He averaged 2.66 SG: Tee-to-Green per round, 1.42 SG: Approach and 1.13 SG: Off-the-Tee. He’s one of the top values on the board in an open competition.

Sahith Theegala (+15000)

We’re going back to Theegala yet again to try to capitalize on his high odds and college pedigree in a weaker field. He has begun his professional career with three straight missed cuts but will look to follow suit of Morikawa (2019 Barracuda Championship) and Viktor Hovland (2020 Puerto Rico Open) as top college golfers to get their first wins in these alternate events.

2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational odds, predictions, picks and PGA Tour best bets

Analyzing the golf betting odds to win the 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, with PGA Tour betting odds, picks, predictions and best bets.

[jwplayer Bhp6HITM]

The 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational serves as the final tune-up for the PGA Championship, and the top six golfers in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings head to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. Below, we look at the BetMGM outright betting odds and make our PGA Tour picks and best bets to win the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

The 78-man field includes 2019 champion Brooks Koepka, plus the reigning winners of the Memorial Tournament (Jon Rahm) and the 3M Open (Michael Thompson).

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday, July 27 at 11:45 a.m. ET.

Tyrrell Hatton (+2200)

Hatton has been on a tear since winning the European Tour’s Turkish Airlines Open near the end of 2019. He picked up his first PGA Tour win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and has come out of the break with a T-3 at the RBC Heritage and a T-4 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He tied for sixth at the WGC-Mexico Championship earlier this season, as well.

The 12th-ranked golfer in the world ranks second on Tour this season in Strokes Gained: Approach; fifth in SG: Tee-to-Green; fifth in Par 4 Performance; and first in SG: Putting.

Collin Morikawa (+2800)

Morikawa followed up his victory at the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village Golf Club with a T-48 result in the more challenging Memorial Tournament the following week. He won last year’s Barracuda Championship as the alternate field event to the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational but has now been invited to the bigger stage with two PGA Tour wins under his belt.

He’s eighth in the field by the Golfweek rankings and ninth by the odds to win at BetMGM.

Abraham Ancer (+5000)

Ancer was in strong form out of the break prior to a T-58 finish at the Memorial. He’s in the top 25 on Tour in SG: Approach, SG: Tee-to-Green; and Par 4 Performance.

SUBSCRIBE to Golfweek and get the most comprehensive coverage of golf’s greatest athletes. Click here or call 1-800-996-4653 to subscribe.

Sungjae Im (+9000)

Im, the winner of The Honda Classic, has been in poor form since a T-10 at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He missed the cut at the RBC Heritage and the Memorial while finishing outside the top 50 in his three other events.

He’s coming off a rare one-week break and has much higher odds than we’ve seen for much of the last two years.

2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational Betting Picks – Long shots

Jul 26, 2020; Blaine, Minnesota, USA; Max Homa hits a tee shot on the 11th hole during the final round of the 3M Open golf tournament at TPC Twin Cities. (Photo Credit: David Berding – USA TODAY Sports)

Max Homa (+12500)

Homa ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, in last week’s field in SG: Tee-to-Green and SG: Approach, according to Data Golf. He lost a woeful 2.31 strokes per round putting but was still able to finish T-3. He’ll face much stiffer competition this week, but his odds remain ripe for the picking.

Mackenzie Hughes (+15000)

Hughes has a T-3 at the Travelers Championship and a T-6 at the Memorial as his best results in five events since returning to play. He has been much better in SG: Putting and SG: Around-the-Green than in approach and from tee-to-green, but his flat stick is absolutely worth backing at this high of a number.
