LSU Quarterbacks: Garrett Nussmeier will redshirt, won’t play the rest of the season

Garrett Nussmeier will sit for the rest of the year.

There was a big question heading into the final two games against the ULM Warhawks and Texas A&M Aggies when it came to the quarterbacks. Would Garrett Nussmeier play another down in 2021 and waste his redshirt?

That question was answered on Thursday night. Head coach Ed Orgeron left it up to Garrett and his father Doug as to whether or not he would continue to play this season.

According to Adam Hunsucker of The Daily Advertiser/USA TODAY Sports, Nussmeier has decided to redshirt this season meaning he won’t play for the rest of the season. Freshman quarterback Matt O’Dowd of Plantation, Florida, will serve as the backup for Max Johnson.

It is likely that O’Dowd never sees the field and the offense just flows through Johnson the rest of the way. He has an opportunity to show improvement from the last several weeks that have quite frankly, left a lot to be desired. If the freshman gets into the game, it would likely be minimal and during mop-up duty.

LSU is listed as a 28.5 point favorite against their in-state competition on Saturday night in Death Valley. The team needs a win this week and again next week when the Aggies come to town for a shot at the postseason. Johnson also could be auditioning for the next head coach of the LSU Tigers. He will also have plenty of opportunities in the spring and fall camps heading into 2022.

With new head coaches, it is often a clean slate and not based on what you did in the past. Warranted or not.

Florida Gators freshman receiver Dionte Marks enters transfer portal

In accordance with NCAA transfer rules, he will have to sit out the 2020 season at his new school, becoming eligible to play in 2021.

After graduating four senior receivers, the position group gets even thinner heading into 2020 as redshirt freshman wideout Dionte Marks has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

Marks was expected to see significant playing time this season behind experienced players like Kadarius Toney, Trevon Grimes and Jacob Copeland. Without him, UF will look to players like Rick Wells and Ja’Markis Weston to pick up backup receiver duties.

A Deland native and three-star recruit in the 2019 recruiting class, Marks committed to UF coach Dan Mullen nearly a year before National Signing Day in Feb. 2018. At Deland High School, he had 45 catches for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns his senior year and helped lead his team to a playoff berth.

He redshirted his only season on campus at UF, appearing in two games — blowouts against FCS opponents UT Martin and Towson — but didn’t record a stat in either appearance.

In accordance with NCAA transfer rules, he will have to sit out the 2020 season at his new school, becoming eligible to play in 2021.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 33 David Gbenda

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at RS-fresh LB David Gbenda.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt freshman linebacker David Gbenda.

David Gbenda, Linebacker

Height: 6-0 / Weight: 225

Class: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Katy, Texas

High School: Cinco Ranch

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 193 overall / No. 11 position / No. 23 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 219 overall / No. 14 position / No. 28 in-state

Analysis: David Gbenda played in four games last season, seeing action against Louisiana Tech, LSU, Rice, and Kansas. The true freshman even got a start against the Jayhawks. While he did not record a single stat in 2019, Gbenda played an important role.

The Longhorns struggled with depth at the running back position last year and Gbenda was a huge help. Even though he did not get playing time on the offensive side of the ball, he got plenty of reps during practice. An emergency ball carrier, Tom Herman said he would have performed well if given the chance.

Now moving back to linebacker in 2020, Gbenda is expected to stay on the defensive side of the ball this season. With questions surrounding players such as Juwan Mitchell and DeMarvion Overshown, Gbenda could find himself with significant playing time this season.

Class: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Cuero, Texas

High School: Cuero

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 59 overall / No. 2 position / No. 10 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 33 overall / No. 3 position / No. 8 in-state

Analysis: One of the most exciting players on this Texas roster is wide receiver, Jordan Whittington. Injuring himself against Louisiana Tech in the season opener, Whittington took a redshirt season. Now, he is ready to explode for the Longhorns.

Coming out of high school, Whittington was listed as an athlete with the ability to play anywhere on the field. Head coach Tom Herman decided to place him on the offensive side of the ball, specifically at running back.

With the emergence of Roschon Johnson and the signing of Bijan Robinson, Whittington will now be transitioning to wide receiver. He and Jake Smith will be the primary players in the slot, replacing Devin Duvernay. Mike Yurich will be able to use Whittington in many ways, making him the most versatile player in this Texas offense.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 13 Marcus Tillman Jr.

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the UT roster. Today, we will be looking at RS fresh LB Marcus Tillman Jr.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt freshman linebacker Marcus Tillman Jr.

Marcus Tillman Jr., Linebacker

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 240

Class: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Orlando, Florida

High School: Jones

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 65 position / No. 96 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star / No. 32 position / No. 76 in-state

Analysis: Playing in four games last season, Tillman suffered a season-ending injury against Oklahoma State. Since he only played in four games, Tillman was able to take a redshirt year.

Coming out of high school, Tillman was a three-star prospect on both 247Sports and Rivals. Schools such as Clemson, Florida, and Ohio State did extend an offer, but the Longhorns were able to beat the in-state Gators for Tillman’s signature.

An inside linebacker, Texas is shorthanded at the position going into this season. With Chris Ash’s defense switching to a 4-3, the inside linebacking position became an important role. Tillman will have some opportunities to get some playing time behind Juwan Mitchell.

LonghornsWire will be looking at each player listed on the UT roster. Today, we will be looking at redshirt freshman CB Kenyatta Watson II.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt freshman cornerback Kenyatta Watson II.

Kenyatta Watson II, Cornerback

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 190

Class: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Loganville, Georgia

High School: Grayson

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 28 position / No. 31 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 112 overall / No. 13 position / No. 12 in-state

Analysis: Redshirting during the 2019 season, Watson II saw playing time in four games. Facing off against Louisiana Tech, West Virginia, Iowa State and Texas Tech, he had six tackles on the season and one pass break up.

Watson was a four-star prospect coming out of Georgia, a state producing some of the best talent in the country in recent recruiting cycles. The 247Sports composite had him ranked as a top 150 player, coming in at No. 131 nationally.

As of now, Watson is listed as a backup cornerback on our projected depth chart going into the 2020 season. Texas’ secondary should be the strong suit of the defense next season. Watson II’s role should increase, but not become a main defensive back just yet.
