Help is on the way, Texas wide receiver set to return from suspension

Redshirt freshman receiver Kennedy Lewis is rejoining his teammates for summer workouts after serving a suspension.

Wide receiver will be one of the most intense position battles to watch at Texas this offseason.

It’s a young, inexperienced group outside of Brennan Eagles and Jake Smith. Michigan graduate transfer Tarik Black will bring leadership, knowledge and experience, but he’s been crippled by injuries in the past.

Although there’s a plethora of talent available at wide receiver for quarterback Sam Ehlinger, there’s also a lot of questions. Joshua Moore recently returned to the team after being suspended from game action last season, he’s expected to compete for playing time at the Z position alongside Marcus Washington and Al’Vonte Woodard.

Fortunately for the Longhorns, speedy redshirt freshman Kennedy Lewis is expected to join the mix for summer workouts. The former three-star recruit will join his teammates this week to go through the on-boarding process before participating in voluntary on-campus workouts on June 22.

Lewis was suspended for the spring semester from both the football team and the school. It could have significantly put him behind his teammates in terms of new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich’s pro-spread offense, but COVID-19 prevented those spring practices from taking place.

The 6-3, 200-pound athlete recorded a 10.53 time in the 100 meters in high school. He’s expected to compete for playing time at Z receiver, assuming Eagles and Black fill the X role.

With such an inexperienced group, the job is wide open for the taking.
