Jonathan Jones agrees to new two-year deal with Patriots

Jones is staying loyal to New England by signing a new contract.

Free agency has officially begun in the NFL, and one former Tiger is among those that have signed a new deal.

[autotag]Johnathon Jones[/autotag], who played cornerback for Auburn from 2012-15, is signing a new deal with the New England Patriots according to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network. The deal is for two years, $20 million with $13 million guaranteed.

Jordy McElroy of Patriots Wire says that the Patriots received good news by re-signing Jones.

It’s a much-needed signing for the Patriots in an effort to keep their defensive backfield intact, following the departure of legendary safety Devin McCourty.

Jones showed the versatility to play both inside and outside last season. The hope is that he can continue to lead by example in a year where Jack Jones and Marcus Jones are expected to take big leaps on defense. New England still has Jalen Mills on the roster as well.

Jones has played his entire seven-year NFL career with the Patriots, where he has 330 tackles and 11 interceptions in 101 total games. He joins former Auburn quarterback [autotag]Jarrett Stidham[/autotag] in signing free-agent deals on Monday. Stidham signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Denver Broncos after spending last season with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Twitter reacts to Jason Kelce returning to Eagles for 13th NFL season

Jason Kelce is returning to the Philadelphia Eagles for his 13th NFL season and Twitter erupted with plenty of reaction

The Eagles watched two key defenders agree to deal with Javon Hargrave (49ers) and T.J. Edwards (Bears) signing a lucrative deal to move on in the free agency process.

All was not lost on Monday at the start of the league’s legal tampering period, as Jason Kelce announced that he’d be returning for his 13th season in Philadelphia.

Social media reacts to everything, and the Kelce news was a big deal.

Rams not expected to tender Marquise Copeland as a restricted free agent

The Rams aren’t expected to tender Marquise Copeland, so he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.

Marquise Copeland is a restricted free agent for the Los Angeles Rams, but it appears he’ll have a chance to choose where he plays in 2023. According to the Charlotte Observer’s Mike Kaye, the Rams aren’t expected to place a tender on Copeland, which will make him an unrestricted free agent this year.

Copeland began his career with the Rams in 2019 by signing as an undrafted interior defender out of Cincinnati. After failing to log a snap in 2019, Copeland was active in 25 games since 2020 and started in nine games for the Rams in 2022.

The 25-year-old interior defender had a career year with the Rams in 2022, registering 31 tackles, two tackles for loss, and he notched his first career sack. Copeland also recorded an interception in the Wild Card showdown against the Arizona Cardinals in 2021 en route to the Rams winning the Super Bowl.

With Copeland likely headed toward free agency, the Panthers could emerge as a suitor due to his familiarity with Carolina’s defensive system. And upon the news of the Rams not tendering Copeland, all eyes will be on what the team decides to do with Greg Gaines and A’Shawn Robinson in free agency.

Cowboys offensive lineman Connor McGovern agrees to terms with Buffalo

The four-year veteran provided depth and versatility for Dallas; he’ll get a 3-yr/$23M deal with the Bills and compete for a starting role. | From @ToddBrock24f7

One of the more versatile pieces in the Cowboys’ toolbox will be plying his trade in the AFC East next season.

The Buffalo Bills have come to terms with offensive lineman Connor McGovern, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The 25-year-old had played in 45 games with the Cowboys after being selected out of Penn State in the third round of 2019’s NFL draft.

McGovern’s new deal will reportedly be a three-year contract worth $23 million and is expected to be made official on Wednesday when the league’s free agency period actually begins.

McGovern started every game of the 15 he was active for in 2022, and was on the field for over 78% of the Cowboys offense’s snaps.

His departure now turns even more of a spotlight on what the club will do regarding several of their veteran linemen. Eight-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith could return but is thought to be in line for a restructuring of his contract. Right guard Zack Martin just got a restructured deal for what will be his 10th NFL season. Jason Peters, the team’s oldest player, is set to hit free agency. Terence Steele received a second-round tender; the club will likely wait until the summer to try to hammer out a longer pact once he’s recovered from a torn ACL. Last year’s first-round draft pick Tyler Smith showed proficiency at both left tackle and left guard.

McGovern provided key depth at guard and center and drew only two penalties over the past three seasons, but he also took snaps as a fullback and tight end in some of former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s special formations.

He is expected to have an opportunity to compete for a starting spot on the Bills’ offensive line in 2023 with the seemingly imminent departure of left guard Rodger Saffold.

Resetting the Patriots’ 2023 draft order after Jonnu Smith trade

The Patriots continue to load up on draft picks.

The New England Patriots obviously aren’t done stockpiling draft picks, which was evident in the team acquiring a seventh-round pick on Monday morning in exchange for tight end Jonnu Smith.

An agreement with the Atlanta Falcons basically ended in a salary cap dump for the Patriots heading into the new league year on March 15.

With the additional draft pick, along with the two compensatory picks the team was awarded last week, the Patriots will officially be entering the 2023 NFL draft with 11 total picks. That’s more than enough draft assets to reshape the team how coach Bill Belichick sees fit.

The team will have the No. 14 overall pick to kick-start the festivities on the opening night of the draft board going live on Thursday, April 27. Here’s the complete draft order after the Smith trade.

Schefter: DT Javon Hargrave was between the Browns and 49ers

The Browns were *this* close

The Cleveland Browns are making a conscious effort to improve the interior of their defensive line after a putrid season. And according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, they were extremely close to landing the top defensive tackle on the market in Javon Hargrave. The former Philadelphia Eagle, however, opted to accept a deal from the San Francisco 49ers instead.

The Browns will now look to pivot, and potentially to former Ohio State standout Dre’Mont Jones, who has come into his own over the past three seasons with the Denver Broncos. Regardless of the big name they land, it will be far from the only defensive lineman they add in free agency.

National reaction to Javon Hargrave leaving the Eagles for a 4-year, $84M deal with 49ers

We’re looking at the national reaction to Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave agreeing to a massive 4-year, $84M Deal with the rival 49ers

The Javon Hargrave era is over in Philadelphia, as defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is headed to the San Francisco 49ers on a huge deal.

The $21 million per season puts Hargrave at third in the NFL behind Daron Payne ($22.5 million per) and Aaron Donald.

Hargrave was listed ahead of Daron Payne on ESPN’s top 50 free agents, list and if not for the five-year age difference, the Eagles’ defensive tackle could be resetting the market.

Hargrave had 11 sacks and 37 tackles this season, and his 17.2% pass rush win rate when he was lined up on the interior ranked third in the NFL behind only Kansas City’s Chris Jones and Houston’s Maliek Collins. The game-wrecking defensive tackle had 23 sacks in three seasons with the Eagles.

He’ll now join a 49ers roster that’s loaded and likely headed for a potential 2024 postseason matchup.

He’res the national reaction to Hargrave moving on.
