Colts protect two practice squad players in Week 11

Colts placed two players on the protected practice squad in Week 11.

The Indianapolis Colts protected safety Jahleel Addae and quarterback Brett Hundley on the practice squad ahead of the Week 11 matchup with the Buffalo Bills, per the league’s transaction wire.

With Khari Willis remaining on the injured reserve list with a calf injury and Julian Blackmon out for the season with a torn Achilles, the Colts have been elevating Addae to the active roster for game days. He’s done so twice already in Weeks 9 and 10.

If he’s to play on Sunday against the Bills, the Colts will have to make a roster move and sign him to the active roster.

Rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger has carved out a role as the backup behind starter Carson Wentz but the Colts still like Hundley as a “break glass” option so it should be no surprise he gets protected for another week.

Colts protect practice squad QB Brett Hundley, WR DeMichael Harris

Colts protected practice squad QB Brett Hundley, WR DeMichael Harris for Week 3.

The Indianapolis Colts protected practice squad players quarterback Brett Hundley and wide receiver DeMichael Harris in Week 3, per the league’s transaction wire.

As starting quarterback Carson Wentz works through two ankle sprains, it isn’t clear if he will be able to play against the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. This means the Colts would have to turn to Jacob Eason as the starter while Hundley would likely be elevated to the active roster as the backup.

Harris was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster in Week 2 after Parris Campbell suffered an abdomen injury. Harris saw just two snaps on offense against the Los Angeles Rams, but the Colts may just be preparing for Campbell to miss another game if that’s the case.

Colts place P Ryan Allen on the protected practice squad

Ryan Allen again gets protected.

The Indianapolis Colts placed punter Ryan Allen on the protected practice squad, per the league’s transaction wire.

This is the second time in as many weeks that the Colts have placed Allen on the protected list. Even though Rigoberto Sanchez is still on the active roster, he hasn’t been able to practice lately, and the Colts have been keeping Allen on the practice squad while calling him up before gameday.

However, they may not have to do that much longer. There is a chance Sanchez returns to practice this week—that’s the Colts’ hope at least—despite undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor at the beginning of the month.

It isn’t clear if Sanchez will be able to play on Sunday against the Houston Texans and in the event he doesn’t, the Colts want to feel protected with Allen in order to avoid being without a punter on Sunday.

Steelers practice squad 2020: Pittsburgh protects 4 PS players for Week 14

A new concept for the 2020 season is the “protected” practice squad. Here are the four players the Steelers chose to protect.

For Week 14 practice squad protections, Pittsburgh tabbed wide receiver Deon Cain, offensive tackle Anthony Coyle, running back Wendell Smallwood and kicker Matthew Wright. These four are not eligible to sign with another team until after Sunday’s game.

Wright started in place of Chris Boswell versus the Washington Football Team on Monday, as Boswell injured his hip last Saturday in practice. Though Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is hopeful he’ll be available for Sunday’s Buffalo Bills game, it’s too soon to tell.

Teams can designate protected players each Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m., except for clubs that played on the previous Monday night; their designations go into effect prior to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Pittsburgh travels to Buffalo to take on the Bills Sunday night.

Colts place P Ryan Allen on protected practice squad

Ryan Allen goes on the protected practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts placed punter Ryan Allen on the protected practice squad, per the league’s transaction wire.

Filling in for regular punter Rigoberto Sanchez, who is recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, Allen made his debut with the Colts during the team’s 26-20 win over the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.

In the Week 13 win, Allen had five punts averaging 47 yards per attempt. He had one touchback and one punt downed inside the 20-yard line.

With Allen on the protected practice squad, teams are not allowed to poach him throughout the week. Once Monday following the game against the Raiders comes around, teams will have a window to sign him if they please.

There is currently one spot open on the practice squad roster. The Steelers signed rookie safety Antoine Brooks to the 53-man roster on Thursday. This will be Brooks’ fifth time being elevated to the active/inactive roster.

Week 1

  • OL Evan Boehm
  • DT Justin Zimmer
  • CB Dane Jackson
  • CB Cam Lewis

Here’s our previous explanation on the “protected” practice squad situation, a new addition to the NFL this season, from our Week 1 coverage:

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the United States, the NFL’s owners and players came to an offseason agreement that we’ve seen the first installment of on Tuesday evening. Each team in the league can “protect” four players on their practice squad each week.

The idea is to provide some extra depth for teams in case of a COVID-19 outbreak in a locker room late in the week prior to a Sunday or Monday game. Those four can be called up to the active roster up until Sunday morning prior to kickoff every week.
