Bills claim DT Joey Ivie off waivers from Colts

Bills claimed DT Joey Ivie off waivers from the Colts.

The Buffalo Bills claimed former defensive tackle Joey Ivie off of waivers from the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.

Ivie was waived by the Colts on Monday in an attempt to get their roster down to 80 players following the second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.

With a plethora of depth along the interior defensive line, it simply became a numbers game for Ivie. However, he finds a new home with the Bills and will be looking to make the final roster cuts on Aug. 31.

The Colts have some decisions to make on the interior defensive line with Antwaun Woods, Taylor Stallworth, Andrew Brown, Chris Williams and Kameron Cline all competing for the final spots in the room.

Colts to sign DT Joey Ivie

Colts are expected to sign DT Joey Ivie.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign defensive tackle Joey Ivie once he passes through COVID-19 protocols, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

With a roster spot open due to the addition of three players on the reserve/COVID-19 list this week, the Colts have made some moves to fill out the 90-man roster.

Ivie, 26, was a seventh-round pick with the Dallas Cowboys during the 2017 NFL draft. He’s bounced around the league a bit over the last four seasons but has appeared in just eight games, all of which came in 2019.

Ivie will likely compete for a roster spot at the back end of the defensive tackle room with players like Taylor Stallworth and Andrew Brown.

Browns officially activate TE David Njoku from injured reserve

The Browns also elevated DL Joey Ivie from the practice squad for Week 5

Kevin Stefanski proved a man of his word, and quickly. On Friday, Stefanski stated that the team was set to activate tight end David Njoku from injured reserve before Sunday’s game. On Saturday, the Browns officially followed through on Stefanski’s proclamation.

Njoku will be eligible to play on Sunday against the visiting Indianapolis Colts. He has missed the last three games.

In addition to activating Njoku, the Browns elevated defensive lineman Joey Ivie up from the practice squad for Sunday’s game. He will revert back to the practice squad after the game.

Ivie can help provide depth with starting DT Larry Ogunjobi out and DE Adrian Clayborn questionable.

Browns sign a pair of DTs to the practice squad

The Browns released OT Brad Aiello and RB Bennie LeMay to make room

The Browns restocked the defensive tackle depth on the team heading into the Week 1 weekend. Cleveland added two new DTs to the practice squad on Friday.

Joey Ivie and Tanzel Smart signed with the Browns on the practice squad. Both have some NFL regular-season experience. Ivie was a seventh-round pick by the Cowboys out of Florida in the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s spent time with the Falcons, Seahawks, Chiefs and Titans too. He played five games for Kansas City and three for Tennessee in 2019.

Smart was also a 2017 draft selection, a sixth-rounder by the Rams. He started four games as a rookie and played in 13 games a year ago for Los Angeles. He spent training camp with the Buffalo Bills this summer. Smart was a teammate of Browns RB Dontrell Hilliard, also on the practice squad, at Tulane.

To make room for the newcomers, the Browns cut RB Bennie LeMay and offensive tackle Brady Aiello from the practice squad. Both are undrafted rookies.

Titans promote DL Joey Ivie to active roster, waive CB Kareem Orr

The Tennessee Titans made roster moves a day ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the division rival Houston Texans.

The team promoted defensive lineman Joey Ivie from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, and waived cornerback Kareem Orr.

Ivie was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 26, and saw action for the Kansas City Chiefs in five games, recording two tackles.

He was originally selected in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft, with stints on the practice squads of the Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City.

The Titans and Texans are set to kick off at noon CT on Sunday.

Former Chiefs DT Joey Ivie lands on Titans practice squad

Ivie appeared in five games for the Kansas City Chiefs this season.

A former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman has opted to join the Tennessee Titans practice squad according to the NFL’s transaction report from Tuesday.

Joey Ivie is the newest member of the Titans practice squad. Ivie first joined the Chiefs late in the 2018 season on the practice squad. He was later signed to a reserve/future deal. He made the Chiefs’ 53-man roster following the 2019 preseason but was released after the first two games of the regular season. He ultimately rejoined the team on the practice squad and would remain there until Week 9 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Kansas City was in a bind where they were quite short-handed along the defensive line for a stretch of the season. Ivie stepped in and helped out, but became clear that he wasn’t a long term solution for the team. He only played 87 snaps in total over those five games for the Chiefs’ defense and recorded just two tackles and one QB hit during that span.

Ivie was later released to make room for defensive end Demone Harris. Kansas City needed a little more rotation and depth at the edge rusher position. Ivie only provided that during dime defensive looks and it wasn’t exactly his forte.

One of the games Ivie was active for was the Week 10 matchup against the Titans. It’s clear they liked what they saw out of him during the 17 snaps that he played. Now, he’ll perhaps get a chance to play some snaps on the other side of that matchup.

Ivie was pretty chummy with his Kansas City teammates. During training camp, Patrick Mahomes and some other players stationed on the third floor of the dorms at Missouri Western State University played a prank on Ivie and barricaded him in his room using a spare mattress. They’ll all certainly miss that camaraderie, but there’s always a chance Ivie returns to the Chiefs sometime down the line.

Chiefs sign DE Demone Harris to 53-man roster from Ravens practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs have opted for some practice squad poaching to reinforce their depth at the defensive end position.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a signing to reinforce the depth at the defensive end position.

After bringing in several veteran free agents for workouts, the front office has opted to go a different route. As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are poaching defensive end Demone Harris from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.

Harris entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Buffalo in 2018. He originally signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and shuttled between their active roster and practice squad. During the 2019 preseason with the Bucs, Harris accumulated 11 total tackles, one sack and multiple QB pressures while playing the outside linebacker position in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He was cut last month, and the Ravens signed him to their practice squad on Oct. 22.

Harris has the prototypical size for a Steve Spagnuolo defensive end at 6 feet 4 and 272 pounds. He’ll likely even be able to reduce down to the inside when Spagnuolo runs his signature “NASCAR” packages. At first glance, Harris seems to be more comfortable putting his hand in the dirt and getting after the quarterback from a three-point stance.

In order to make room for Harris, the Chiefs have waived defensive tackle Joey Ivie. Ivie was called up from the Kansas City practice squad just a few weeks ago. The Chiefs will likely try to bring him back there if he clears waivers.

It’s easy to see what the Chiefs like about Harris from a football standpoint, but he is regarded as a good character guy too. A story about him rewarding a housekeeper who found and returned his misplaced engagement ring has been making the rounds. He’s also been regarded as a hard worker. For instance, he was a walk-on at the University of Buffalo. He was released multiple times by the Bucs once he made it to the NFL, but he never wavered. Now he’ll get his chance to go out and prove that he belongs on a 53-man roster.
