Titans agree to terms with 2 DBs among 4 roster moves

The Titans swapped out defensive backs in four roster moves on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans announced four roster moves on Tuesday, all of which involved defensive backs.

The team announced it has signed safeties Adrian Colbert and Elijah Benton, while also waiving defensive backs Michael Griffin II and Kenneth George. Griffin was waived with an injury designation.

After being drafted in the seventh round in 2017, Colbert has appeared in 39 games (22 starts) over five seasons, playing snaps with the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns.

Benton went undrafted out of Liberty and has played in just one NFL game in his career, which came in 2020 with the Browns. He has also spent time on the practice squads of the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Jets.

Griffin was signed by Tennessee shortly after the 2022 NFL draft, while George, a former Volunteer, was inked in May.

We may get our first look at Benton and Colbert when Tennessee travels to Baltimore to take on the Ravens in their preseason opener on Thursday.

Jets’ only healthy safeties are newcomers

The Jets’ only healthy safeties are a pair of players who haven’t taken a single snap for New York.

Ashtyn Davis and Sharrod Neasman are on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Elijah Riley is in concussion protocol. That means the Jets’ only healthy safeties are a pair of players who haven’t taken a single snap for New York.

Meet Will Parks and practice squad member Elijah Benton.

Parks was claimed off waivers this week after the Dolphins released him on Dec. 20. The 27-year-old played for the Broncos and Eagles from 2016-2020. He has 180 tackles, 13 defended passes and four interceptions for his career.

Benton, meanwhile, was signed in early December. The 25-year-old spent time with the Seahawks and Patriots this season. Benton entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Browns in 2020. He appeared in one game for Cleveland and only played a handful of snaps on special teams.

Both players now have a chance to see significant snaps at safety, a position that has hindered the Jets all season. There is a chance Riley returns this week after his scary Week 15 collision, but Parks and Benton could play a lot either way when the Jets face the Jaguars this weekend.

Seahawks tryout 3 free agent linemen, cut 1 DB from practice squad

Yesterday, the team brought in three free agent linemen for tryouts and also cut one player from the practice squad

The Seahawks have several holes to fill on their roster – and that was before the news that Jamal Adams would miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury that will require surgery.

Yesterday, the team brought in three free agent linemen for tryouts and also waived one player from the practice squad. Here’s a review.

Browns sign 14 players from the practice squad to reserve/futures contracts

All but one of the practice squad members from last week signed

The Browns coaching and management must have liked what they saw on the practice fields late in the year. On Monday, the Browns signed nearly all of the active practice squad roster from the week of the AFC divisional playoff round to reserve/futures contracts.

The 14 players

S Elijah Benton (Liberty)

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (Louisiana-Lafayette)

TE Jordan Franks (Central Florida)

CB A.J. Green (Oklahoma State)

G Cordel Iwuagwu (Texas Christian)

QB Kyle Lauletta (Richmond)

DE Cameron Malveaux (Houston)

TE Kyle Markway (South Carolina)

K Matt McCrane (Kansas State)

LB Montrel Meander (Grambling State)

C Javon Patterson (Mississippi)

FB Johnny Stanton (UNLV)

T Alex Taylor (South Carolina State)

WR Derrick Willies (Texas Tech)

The only practice squad player from last week who did not sign with the team is CB Donovan Olumba, who was signed during last week.

Players signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s business year. That takes place on March 17. It ties them to the Browns through that period instead of them being street free agents.

Browns sign OL Anthony Fabiano, activate LB B.J. Goodson

Fabiano started 4 games for the Browns in 2016

Facing a depth crunch along the offensive line due to several injuries, the Cleveland Browns brought back a familiar old name. The Browns signed lineman Anthony Fabiano to the active roster on Wednesday.

Fabiano has been with the Browns before. Back in 2016, he played in four games, starting one, as a rookie center out of Harvard. He’s also played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2017 and has spent time on several practice squads in the meantime. Fabiano spent the 2018 preseason with the Browns, too.

The team also activated linebacker B.J. Goodson from the reserve/COVID-19 list, which is a very welcome development to help bolster the defense. Goodson was the team’s leading tackler in the regular season despite missing the final two games. He was the first player to test positive for COVID-19 during the latest wave of infection.

Practice squad safety Elijah Benton was also activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Browns place OL Chris Hubbard on injured reserve

Browns also moved safety Elijah Benton to the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list

Chris Hubbard’s 2020 season is now officially over. The Browns placed the veteran offensive lineman on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Hubbard tore ligaments in his right knee in Sunday night’s win in New York over the Giants, as well as dislocating a kneecap. He is slated for surgery to repair the extensive damage. Hubbard was filling in for Wyatt Teller at right guard when he went down with the injury.

After starting at right tackle for two years and largely struggling in Cleveland, Hubbard found his niche as the top reserve lineman. He played well in fill-in duty at both guard and tackle during the season.

The team has not yet filled the roster vacancy created by Hubbard’s move.

In addition to Hubbard going on I.R., the Browns also moved safety Elijah Benton to the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list.

Browns elevate S Elijah Benton from practice squad for Steelers matchup

Benton helps fill the injury-related void at safety for Week 6

The Cleveland Browns brought up some needed reinforcements to the secondary for Sunday’s Week 6 matchup in Pittsburgh. The Browns elevated safety Elijah Benton from the practice squad to the active roster for the game with the Steelers.

The move to elevate Benton was an expected one. Cleveland ruled out starting safety Karl Joseph and his replacement starter in Week 5, Ronnie Harrison, in Friday’s final injury report. The only safeties left on the roster are Andrew Sendejo, Sheldrick Redwine and undrafted rookie Jovante Moffatt.

Benton is also an undrafted rookie. The 6-1, 205-pounder from Liberty has been on the Browns’ practice squad all season and was protected this week. He will return to the practice squad after the game as part of the NFL’s new system. Players elevated from the practice squad for a game will immediately revert to the practice squad the day following the game.
