Notre Dame has two names on Outland Trophy watch list

Do you have a preference for who would win this?

If Notre Dame’s offense is to have any success this season, much of it will come from the offensive line. While that’s true every year, the Irish especially can call that a strong area this season. That’s because both [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] and [autotag]Josh Lugg[/autotag] have been named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy. This award recognizes the best interior lineman in college football and can go to a player on either offense or defense.

The honor definitely adds to Patterson’s reputation as he also is on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, given to college football’s best center. He has not allowed a sack in his career yet, and both he and Lugg started every game for the Irish in 2021. Irish quarterbacks would be wise to take advantage of having these two weapons.

The Irish’s history with the Outland Trophy goes back to its beginning in 1946. [autotag]George Connor[/autotag] and [autotag]Bill Fischer[/autotag] won in two of the first three years it was presented. Their only other winner was [autotag]Ross Browner[/autotag] in 1976.

Ricky Stromberg added to Preaseason Outland Trophy Watch List

Arkansas center Ricky Stromberg might be more than just the nation’s best center.

Preseason awards give fans an excellent indicator of who to watch for, hence why they’re called a “watch list.”

Arkansas’ rising senior center Ricky Stromberg joins a list of 89 players for the Preseason Outland Trophy watch list

Stromberg played in all 13 games last season with 873 snaps at center. He led an offensive line that blocked for the best rushing attack in the Power 5, averaging 227.8 yards a game. On his way to being named third-team All-SEC by the Associated Press, Stromberg only allowed three sacks.

The Outland Trophy goes to the best interior lineman in the country – offensive or defensive. It is named after John H. Outland, who was inducted into the college football hall of fame in 2001. This year’s list of 89 players consists of 29 offensive tackles, 25 defensive tackles, 18 guards, and

Stromberg aims to be the first Razorback to win the award since defensive tackle Lloyd Phillips in 1966 and the first offensive Razorback since guard Bud Brooks in 1954.

Stromberg, in three seasons, has started 32 games in his career and played 2,242 snaps. He entered Fayetteville as a four-star guard out of Union High school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 247 Sports ranked him as the 19th best offensive lineman in the country before committing to Arkansas.

Pro Football Network ranked Stromberg as the fourth best center heading into the 2022 NFL Draft. Another big season on the ground from the Razorbacks could set Stromberg up to be a day one selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Landing on a preseason watch list makes his decision to stay for his senior season look like a smart one.

These 2 Gators named to Outland Trophy preseason watch list

Gervon Dexter and O’Cyrus Torrence were named to the Outland Trophy preseason watch list, given to the nation’s best interior lineman.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Gervon Dexter[/autotag] and offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] were both named to the Outland Trophy preseason watch list, an award issued annually to the nation’s best interior lineman, regardless if they play on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. The Football Writers Association of America has presented the trophy since 1946 and will announce this year’s winner on December 8.

This is one of the many preseason recognitions that Torrence has received this offseason. The Louisiana transfer was named to the preseason All-SEC First Team at SEC media days last week. He was also named a preseason All-American by multiple outlets including Phil Steele, Sporting News, Walter Camp and ESPN. Along with his on-field impact, Torrence has been a major help in implementing first-year head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s system, even being referred to as “Coach O’Cyrus” by fellow offensive lineman [autotag]Richard Gouraige[/autotag].

Not to be overshadowed by his offensive counterpart, Dexter has earned early recognition of his own. The junior defensive lineman was named a preseason All-American by Walter Camp and Sporting News and was named to the preseason All-SEC list by Athlon and Phil Steele. He is expected to follow up a breakout 2021 season where he started nine games and appeared in all 13 games for the Gators.

Six Notre Dame players earn spot on Senior Bowl Watch List

Who could be headed to Mobile after the season?

The Senior Bowl always is a big deal for players who have just finished their eligibility to play college football. It often serves as a major showcase for any player hoping to get drafted by the NFL only a few months later. While we obviously have no clue who will be going to the 2022 game at this point, it’s fun to look at the players who have a chance. This year’s Senior Bowl Watch List has been released, and six Notre Dame players are on it:

Three Ohio State players named to the Outland Trophy preseason watch list

We’ve got a trio of Ohio State interior lineman that have been announced on the Outland preseason watch list. Which one do you think has the best shot to win it?

The Football Writer’s Association of America announced the 2021 Preseason Outland Trophy watch list on Tuesday, and three Ohio State players were included among the 80 names honored. Offensive tackles Thayer Munford and Nicholas Petit-Frere, and defensive tackle Haskell Garrett were all a part of the release.

The Outland Trophy has been around since 1946 and is handed out to the college football player judged to be the best interior lineman annually. The award winner can be on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.

Munford is entering his fifth year as a super senior who decided to come back for the extra year allowed to all players as a part of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been listed on multiple publications and websites as a preseason All-American and potential high NFL draft pick in April. He should be one of the best anchors on the left side of the offensive line anywhere in America.

Petit-Frere is ready for a breakout year. He is a former 5-star commit that redshirted his first year before landing a starting spot last fall. With an extra year of development and the muscle he has put on, he too has the potential to be one of the best offensive lineman in the country.

Garrett also decided to come back for one more season instead of entering the 2021 NFL draft. His story is an amazing one after somehow recovering from a gunshot wound to the face in time for the 2020 season. Simply being in the lineup wasn’t what he had in mind. Instead, Garrett turned into one of the best interior defensive linemen in the Big Ten and has also received multiple preseason accolades heading into this year.

Ohio State has had four players win the Outland Trophy. Jim Parker (1956), Jim Stillwagon (1970), John Hicks (1973), and Orlando Pace (1996), all were voted as recipients. This year, OSU is one of just five programs (Boston College, Clemson, Georgia, and Oklahoma are the others) with three players on the preseason watch list.

We want to wish good luck to all three. Hopefully, at least one of them will be in attendance when the Outland is announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 9.

The quality of offensive linemen coming through Happy Valley continues to be on the rise, and the 2021 season could be one of the best yet under head coach James Franklin. On Monday, two pieces of the Penn State offensive line were named on the watch list for the Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top interior lineman.

Offensive tackle Rasheed Walker and center Mike Miranda were among those named on the watch list for the Outland Trophy by the Football Writers Association of America. The Outland Trophy can go to an offensive or defensive lineman. The only qualification is playing an interior line position primarily.

Penn State has one Outland Trophy winner in the long history of the award. Mike Reid received the award in 1969 for his success on the defensive line. The Outland Trophy has been awarded annually since 1946.

Alabama’s Alex Leatherwood won the Outland Trophy for the 2020 season, giving Alabama six all-time Outland Trophy winners. Alabama has had three of the last five Outland Trophy winners. Nebraska has nine all-time Outland Trophy winners to lead the nation.

Notre Dame’s semifinalist for best lineman award

Notre Dame’s offensive line is a force and one of it’s key cogs was named a semi-finalist for the best lineman award on Monday.

Notre Dame’s offensive line has drawn praise seemingly week after week all season long and on Monday one of their own was named a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy that is awarded annually to the best interior lineman, offensive or defensive, in all of college football.

Senior left tackle Liam Eichenberg made the cut with five others:

Wyatt Davis, OG, Ohio State
Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama
Kenyon Green, G, Texas A&M
Alex Leatherwood, OT, Alabama
Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa

Eichenberg is the best of a very talented bunch that have helped Notre Dame dominate the time of possession game this year and has been key in three different running backs being able to rush for over 100 yards in a combined seven contests this year.

Eichenberg has also been nothing short of outstanding in pass protection as he hasn’t allowed a sack since Week 5 of 2018 according to Pro Football Focus.

Notre Dame has had three Outland Trophy winners in the 75 years of the award:  George Connor in 1946, Bill Fischer in 1948, and most recently Ross Browner in 1976.

Somehow Quenton Nelson was only voted as a semi-finalist in 2017.  Mike McGlinchey was a finalist the same year as the award was ultimately given to Ed Oliver of Houston.

The Outland Trophy, which has been awarded annually by the FWAA since 1946, is named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1800s. The Outland Trophy is the third-oldest award in major college football behind the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award.
