Jon Scheyer left off Naismith Award Men’s College Coach of the Year watch list

The Naismith Awards revealed its Men’s College Coach of the Year watch list on Friday, and Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer was not among the 15 finalists.

The Naismith Awards released their late-season watch list for Men’s College Coach of the Year on Friday, and Duke head coach Jon Scheyer was not among the 15 finalists listed.

Scheyer’s Blue Devils are tied atop the ACC with a 12-3 conference record, and 16 wins in their last 18 games have them 21-5 on the season as a whole. They’re currently eighth in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency metric.

North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis was the only ACC coach who made the cut. Other notable names include Purdue’s Matt Painter, Houston’s Kelvin Sampson, Auburn’s Bruce Pearl, and Connecticut’s Dan Hurley.

The committee also recognized Bryce Drew from Grand Canyon, Anthony Grant from Dayton, and Josh Schertz from Indiana State for their work with smaller programs. All 15 finalists can be seen below.

Of teams within the top 10 of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll as of February 23, five coaches didn’t make the final watch list. Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, Tennessee’s Rick Barnes, Marquette’s Shaka Smart, and Kansas’s Bill Self also failed to make the final cut.

Two Diamond Hogs up for Golden Spikes Award as nation’s best baseball player

Two players up for the Golden Spikes on the Diamond Hogs roster? Man, this team is gonna be good.

Arkansas baseball fans know Hagen Smith quite well. But Wehiwa Aloy? Give it time.

Smith, the Diamond Hogs left-handed ace, and Aloy, Arkansas’ new starting shortstop were each named to the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award on Friday. The Golden Spikes Award is given nationally to the best amateur baseball player in the country.

Smith’s season was good enough in 2023 to result in his being named a Golden Spikes semifinalist. He finished the season with 109 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings while limiting opponents to a .217 average and carrying a 3.64 earned-run average.

Aloy, who transferred from Sacramento State via the transfer portal in the offseason, was a Freshman All-American after his one season at State. He slashed .376/.427/.662 and had 14 homers and 46 RBI during his Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year season.

Smith and Aloy are among the 55 players who were named to the watch list, which will be trimmed in April, though players can be added to the list early in the season from high performance. The two are also the 14th and 15th players from Arkansas to make the preseason watch list since 2008.

The Diamond Hogs open the season Friday in a four-game set against James Madison.

No Pittsburgh media among AP awards voters

Here is the full list of AP voters for the NFL awards.

Thursday night was the NFL Honors where the most prestigious individual awards of the season were handed out. Those awards are voted on by a select group of AP media members.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans are all up in the air about the voting for Defensive Player of the Year which went to Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett rather than Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt. Not to feed the conspiracy theorists out there but if you look at the list below you will see that none of the 50 voters are members of the Pittsburgh media. Do with that information what you will.

Former Alabama LB Will Anderson named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year

Houston Texans Will Anderson Jr awarded as NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year

With the Super Bowl just days away, it leaves a bitter-sweet feeling. Sweet in the sense that we get the most highly anticipated game of the year, bitter because it means football is gone for seven months. However, it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all, and the 2023 football season was special.

The NFL Honors show was on Thursday evening as Lamar Jackson was unveiled as the league MVP for the second time in his career. For Alabama fans, the exciting part of the evening came as [autotag]Will Anderson Jr.[/autotag] was announced as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Anderson becomes the first former Alabama player to win the award since his current head coach, DeMeco Ryans, last did it in 2006 with the Houston Texans as well. Anderson was a monster all season long as he finished the year with 45 tackles, seven sacks and 10.5 stuffs in 15 games.

Ryans and Anderson is a match made in heaven and is only getting to get better by the year. CJ Stroud and the Texans offense took up most of the headlines in Houston all year long, but the defense was the unsung heroes of the year. The Texans are beginning to look like geniuses for moving up to No. 3 in the draft to get Anderson a year ago.

Demario Davis named Defensive MVP of the 2024 Pro Bowl Games

Saints linebacker Demario Davis was named the Defensive MVP of the 2024 Pro Bowl Games for his performance in dodgeball and flag football:

Demario Davis represented the New Orleans Saints well at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games — a standout in the NFC versus AFC dodgeball game, flag football scrimmage, and other skills challenges, Davis was recognized as the all-star game’s defensive most valuable player.

And when he took the stage to accept that award, Davis delivered a characteristic speech thanking his teammates and paying respect to his opponents coaching the AFC all-star team.

“Man, firstly man I had a lot of great teammates. The best in the business, they played awesome, I’ve got to give an amazing shoutout to them,” Davis said. “It was great being on the NFC team, the winning team, but most importantly being on the winning team, which is the kingdom of God. That’s where my power comes from, that’s where my glory goes. Being on this stage with the greats like Eli Manning, DeMarcus Ware, going against Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis, the legends of the game, you know you’ve got to be locked in mentally and that’s how we showed up. It’s an honor to be here.”

There’s a couple of Pro Football Hall of Famers in that group, and Davis might join them someday. He’s now been selected for two Pro Bowls while earning five consecutive All-Pro selections. He’s continued to defy Father Time late into his career and is on track to continue earning accolades. Whether or not he goes the distance to earn a bronze bust in Canton, he’s a Saints legend through and through.
