Josh Conerly Jr. named to Outland Trophy watch list ahead of 2023 season

Josh Conerly Jr. named to Outland Trophy watch list ahead of 2023 season

2023 is expected to be the season where the top-rated offensive lineman in Oregon Ducks school history finally comes into his own.

The word “finally” is a bit misleading there, because as a true sophomore, former 5-star recruit Josh Conerly Jr. hasn’t had a massive opportunity to show what he’s capable of yet with the Ducks, but he did turn heads several times as a true freshman, even catching a touchdown pass on his birthday against the Colorado Buffaloes.

However, with a remade offensive line in Eugene this year, Conerly is expected to step up as one of the driving forces of the unit this season. So it doesn’t come as a surprise to see him named to the Outland Trophy watch list, highlighting the players identified as potentially the best offensive linemen in the nation this season.

The Ducks lost four of their five starting offensive lineman from a year ago, and there will now be heavy competition to fill the remaining starting spots. Among those competing are Conerly, Ajani Cornelius, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Marcus Harper, Junior Angilau, and Nishad Strother.

The only player in Oregon history to win the Outland Trophy was Penei Sewell, who received the honor in 2019, two years before being selected by the Detroit Lions with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Notre Dame has two names on Outland Trophy watch list

Do you have a preference for who would win this?

If Notre Dame’s offense is to have any success this season, much of it will come from the offensive line. While that’s true every year, the Irish especially can call that a strong area this season. That’s because both [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] and [autotag]Josh Lugg[/autotag] have been named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy. This award recognizes the best interior lineman in college football and can go to a player on either offense or defense.

The honor definitely adds to Patterson’s reputation as he also is on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, given to college football’s best center. He has not allowed a sack in his career yet, and both he and Lugg started every game for the Irish in 2021. Irish quarterbacks would be wise to take advantage of having these two weapons.

The Irish’s history with the Outland Trophy goes back to its beginning in 1946. [autotag]George Connor[/autotag] and [autotag]Bill Fischer[/autotag] won in two of the first three years it was presented. Their only other winner was [autotag]Ross Browner[/autotag] in 1976.

Three Ohio State offensive lineman make Outland Trophy preseason watch list

Thayer Munford, Wyatt Davis, and Josh Myers were all named to the Outland Trophy’s 2020 preseason watch list on Tuesday.

The individual preseason notoriety continues to file in for the Ohio State football team. The offensive line is a veteran group this year, and the folks at the Outland Trophy have taken notice.

Thayer Munford, Josh Myers, and Wyatt Davis have all been named to the Outland’s 2020 preseason watch list that was released Tuesday. All three had an opportunity to turn pro after last season but decided to come back for one more run. Hopefully, the novel coronavirus and the management of it all works to their benefit and we get to see these guys shine this fall.

The Outland has been awarded annually to the college football player judged to be the best interior lineman in the country and is awarded by the Football Writers Association of America. As trophies go, it has been around longer than most, with the first one being awarded in 1946.

Ohio State has had several winners. Jim Parker took it home in 1956, Jim Stillwagon won it in 1970, John Hicks in 1973, and the latest was Orlando Pace in 1996.

Another winner is long overdue.
